It's for a good cause. Sorry about the Babyface.

yeah, but i just gave moveon a chunk of change.

the attraction is that it's at the riviera (capacity 3,000?). the repulsion is babyface.

i take it from the overwhelming silence that the consensus is ... "eh".

I haven't seen any footage of him performing live (except for that bit he did at the DNC and a song from the last album played on Conan O'Brien). I don't think he's the showman he used to be.

i'd like to know how much of his set is 1980-1989 and how much is post 1990. cuz it really would make a huge difference in whether i drop the $50.

I saw this in the Reader and considered it for about 10 seconds, but yeah at this point I wouldn't pony up the cash. Give me free tickets and I'm there in a heartbeat.

frankEEEEEEEEEEE, were you downtown when he gave that impromptu free concert last year or whenever it was?

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

free concert? now that's what i'm talking about. where was it?? did you see it? i've never seen him before.

i'd like to hope he's remotely close to springsteen whom i saw for the first time last year and was completely fucking blown away.

JCM played at by the Picasso sculpture during lunchtime. I think it was 2 years ago. Giant office asses shaking to Pink Houses, shoving Pockets into their fat fucking mouths.

I hate people.

hot carl, Friday, 8 October 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I didn't see it ... I've never seen him either. Apparently he just set up and started playing, like in front of Daley Center I think. I heard that the crowed swelled REALLY quickly (obv), so if you weren't there early on it was impossible to see anything.

Yeah, I saw Springsteen for the first time at the UC about 5 years ago. Prior to that I wasn't even really a fan; some friends of mine insisted I go with them so I decided to check him out. I was totally blown away. I've been a massive fan ever since. I doubt JCM, much as I like him, could ever match that intensity.

hilarity.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone told me before I saw Springsteen a few years ago that the concert experience would forever be ruined after having seen him. It's true. No concert I ever see will match the intensity of that night.

yeah. i was a fan, but not crazed. now i will never miss a show from him ever again. and i will preach to all to join me.

To tell you the truth, I thought the two Rock for Change shows I saw last week were great, if only because it'd been a long time since I went to a show with a real sense of purpose. I'm kicking myself for not traveling to St. Paul for Springsteen, Fogerty, REM, Bright Eyes, and a surprise appearance by Neil Young. Given that Mellencamp has been a very outspoken anti-Bush crank, it could be fun. Sure, he's no Springsteen, but dammit, who else is? I'd say it's worth it for the novelty of seeing Mellencamp and Babyface on the same bill.

(Curious: since Illinois is not a swing state, I wonder why JCM is deviating from mission and playing the Riv?)

which were these?

yeah, i thought this myself. odd. also, it has not yet sold out.

i wonder if there'll be a surprise appearance from neil here.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Cleveland Springsteen, etc. show, and the Grand Rapids Pearl Jam, Death Cab, and Gob Roberts show. Both were pretty great. I somehow doubt Neil will drop in on this JCM show, though I bet he may appear here and there on the near-future Springsteen and Peal Jam dates.
