And apparently I'm the only person that gives a damn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i give a damn. right on! i'll play my miami mp3s tonight.

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I give a damn too, you NYC punk. If this is at Noise tonight I might well pick it up!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the Gun Club album to get? What's the best place to start?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Gun Club is one of those groups that never sound like they should be very good so I've never really heard, but I've always been sort of curious about anyway. I always picture them as an American Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Is that about right or have I been misled?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it's wierd cuz sometimes i'll read stuff that makes em sound like nick cave, but then i remember seeing them called "cowpunk" or something....which makes me think of like uncle tupelo or the long ryders or something....or rank and file

but then again "cowpunk" is one of those weird terms...like people even used to call the Cows "cowpunk" when i dunno what the fuck they had to do with country of any kind....maybe cuz they were named the "Cows" and they were "punk" or cuz Shannon wore cowboy hats sometimes....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

theyre great fules get it all

and yes alex, i'm sorta with Germany's Fun Loving Beer here - I've had that stuff on my hardddrive forever. does the reissue add anything?

ps it's my favorite gun club album

I've always been sort of curious about anyway. I always picture them as an American Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Is that about right or have I been misled?

Similar range of influences (though Jeffrey was a Blondie freak while Nick more a Roxy freak) -- but I think the difference between the two is best captured by this quote, originally in Melody Maker from 1990, from Jeffrey: "The rehab clinic I was in was pretty trashy, but I hear the one that Nick Cave had was fabulous."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So i've got Miami on cd.Had it for awhile. Now if it is remastered i say great.Great songs but a seriously thin & trebly production that does not do the songs justice.Mother Earth is one of the best album closers i've ever heard.Hey Las Vegas Story is being released too.And the Gun Club were more proto White Stripes than anything.Although Jeffery Lee was the real deal, seriously unhinged.Buy Miami or Fire of Love.Later albums had less swamp rat blues, more lead guitar.

evan chronister (evan chronister), Friday, 8 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the production is perfect

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 9 October 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the fact that the sound isn't quite right on this album. There's a great, shambolic, pervading air of "not quite right" to the entire record -- from the tinny guitars through JLP's often way off-key exhortations.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Tried to pick it up tonight but my fave local store didn't have it in yet. Soon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You should have heard them play this live. The material had some serious oomp to it.I saw the Gun Club play one of the best & one the worst shows ever.I liked them bettter without Kid Congo.

evan chronister (evan chronister), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

This is definitely not the place to start with The Gun Club. Begin at the beginning... Fire Of Love. Hands down.

Nobody said Miami was the best place to start, m'friend. I think we ALL have Fire of Love already on this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't, and I do want to get Miami, but I'm not on this thread so far. I don't really know that I like Miami more, since I've never heard all of either album, as far as I remember. I just know I want Miami for "Texas Serenade."

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 9 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

but alex,
your copy was just about on the way !

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 9 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha sorry George. thanks, tho'. I owes ya.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 9 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

any place is a good place to start. either you love jlp or you don't. my first encounter was with divinity. surely not his best. i very much love his last album lucky jim. where he has mellowed a lot. fire of love is great but not his best i feel. he went on after that.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 9 October 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry I bought this. I guess it's no surprise that I wouldn't like it. I think sadly of all the other CDs I could have bought.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 16 October 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You bought the reissue? Hmm...I'll buy it from ya if you like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be okay with me, or we could arrange a trade. E-mail me at my "real" e-mail address (though the one listed here is up and running for now, until I lose my password).

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've got that around somewhere I think...well, maybe just e-mail me at mine to be on the safe side! Thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll e-mail you then. I just put the CD on my discard pile, so to speak, 15 minutes ago. (I don't absolutely hate it, but it's not something I'm going to want to listen to.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Very handy, thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

try "John Hardy" or "Brother & Sister" - you don't like those??!

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 16 October 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

So this is better than I remembered, but still not a patch on "Fire Of Love". Apparently "Miami" is getting a deluxe reissue with a bonus disc of live stuff.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)
