The UK record industry is suing 28 people in an attempt to stop them sharing music files over the internet.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) says the legal action is aimed at “major filesharers” and “large-scale uploaders”. More cases are expected to follow. The BPI will seek damages and injunctions to stop people uploading tracks onto file-sharing networks.

Peter Jamieson, chairman of the BPI, said: “We have been warning for months that unauthorized file-sharing is illegal. These are not people casually downloading the odd track. They are uploading music on a massive scale, effectively stealing the livelihoods of thousands of artists and the people who invest in them.”

The BPI has run a hearts and minds campaign for some time. In March it gave a final warning that if things did not improve it would consider legal action. Since then it has sent 350,000 instant messages to uploaders warning them of possible legal action.

The cases form part of action being taken against 459 file sharers in six European countries by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. Legal action will be a mixture of criminal and civil cases.

What are your thoughts?
I know p2p has made me buy/see gigs of more good records than ever and i love it! so many great bands i'd never have discovered were it not for ilm and p2p.

But on the other hand and understand it can't really go on like this forever.

I dont believe the press reporting of album sales falling. i heard that indy sales have gone up and albums sales are still as normal. Its just the dying singles format that is falling in sales as they are overpriced. the labels are just panicking.

Hmm i'd love a proper download service with much wider selection than itunes and cheaper than £7.99 for an album! its often cheaper at amazon and hmv sales (ziggy stardust £2.99! bargain!) and you dont get any cd or anything from itunes etc. Maybe £4?

hopefully proper mp3 distribution can cut off any silly middle men and more money can go to the artist! Plus Forget crappy radio, mp3 blogs are more exciting i love them.

anyway sorry forthe mass of text....any thoughts?

six months pass...
I tend to download music and I live in Britain. I only download occasionally, not on a massive scale, but this has bothered me a lot. I still buy CDs as I can't listen to MP3s on anything but a computer: ear problems mean I can't wear headphones, so no iPOD for me!

"headline should say "uploaders"; there is a very big difference"
