at the gas station they have this cd thing and they had a cd called the music of the millenum that was a grab bag of hits from the last twenty years . It included the dire straights . it made me want to vomit.

So i know it is an absurd ides but it may be fun. What 12 songs/peices of music would you include in something called music of the millenium

Gosh, what a question. Nothing post-1955 that's for sure.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd only allow songs off albums with the word "millennium" in their title.

I'd try to put in one song for each decade plus two bonus tracks, one pre-1950, one after. The 60s have to be a Beatles song. The 50s Presley. The 70s probably Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". The 80s a Smiths song, maybe "Panic". The 90s probably "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

I was thinking of music of the last century. Music of the millenium obviously has to include classical music. I give up.

Songs of the native populations of the Americas immediately post- conquest.

Yikes, there appears Robbie. hah!

helen fordsdale, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only want songs from the '80s on my compilation. I don't see the point of the rest of the millennium.

It would be a disgrace if such a record did not include Elgar.

Anthony Sanderson, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It should be one of those reduction-sample things which takes a fraction of a second of a song from every single year, near as it can. It will start silent and voices will come in, then metal instruments, then string noises, then picked strings and horns then finally it will end with a .5 second beep.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 12 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sanderson, for once in your miserable life I have to agree with you there. Final six minutes of "Dream of Gerontius."

Horace Coker, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, Mr Carlin.

(p.s. Robin Carmody tells me that, on balance, he agrees with you.)
