So what do the metal (and non-metal) folks think of them?

Panopticon, Monday, 11 October 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

don't know much about OMG: only heard two tracks. but they kicked ass.

as for isis ... i was introduced to them about 18 months ago by a metal-savvy friend. and they blew me away.

i've come to them from a resolutely non-metal angle; a path increasing in intensity something like this: cocteau twins > slowdive > swervedriver > mogwai > aereogramme> isis

and they've opened my eyes up to so much more. without isis, i wouldn't have heard envy, explosions in the sky, pelican ... so much more of the "post-metal" (for want of a better phrase) that i love today.

the one issue i had with them was the singing: the metallic grunting. as a non-metaller, i found that took time to come to terms with. but then suddenly you stop noticing and the music becomes a glorious, seismic whole.

i've not heard panopticon yet, basically because i'm waiting till i get paid before i buy any more music :(

OMG >Isis

kephm, Monday, 11 October 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Next step after Isis - either Sunn0))) or Khanate

NED IN RIDICULOUS JOKE SHOCKAH.

I like Isis a lot, though I haven't heard anything they've put out since Ocanic (that was the title, right?) It seemed like they were moving in a more prog direction, away from the mountains of glacial sludge that characterized their early work.

Old Man Gloom are pretty cool from what I've heard, but I haven't heard much. They didn't grab me as immediately as Isis did.

i have an OMG story that i will not shared with yous

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

isis doesnt do it for me the way neurosis, mastodon and pelican do.

astroblaster (astroblaster), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I recently acquired "Oceanic" and its remixes via $1$k. So far, I like the remixes a lot more. But it was smart to get the likes of Thomas Koener and Tim Hecker to do the remixes, because they know how to keep things dark and noisy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm assured by the friend who got me into isis that panopticon is the greatest album in the history of recorded sound.

mind, he does have a propensity to exaggerate :)

he also said it sounds like the cure in parts.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post: ooh, hey, remixes? fucking hell, i never knew about that.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, there's a (Japanese-only?) 2CD set of 'em. I've never heard it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

any idea where i might find this? i've had a cursory google (and have despatched said friend, who has a day off today, to do the same) but no luck yet. just lots of sold-out vinyl.

sorry to be a lazy bastard. honest. i'm busy. i'm at work :(

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Panoptican = how Mogwai sound in their dreams. Also might just be the first ever metal E record. Seriously.

I AM EMAILING SOME DUDE WHO HAS AWESOME ITUNES SHARE

Actually, I know way too little about metal to make that claim. There may have been others, but I haven't heard them.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"metal E" ew.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

how Mogwai sound in their dreams

woooooooooooooooah, that sounds cool as FUCK

the first ever metal E record

and that sounds even cooler

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, there's a (Japanese-only?) 2CD set of 'em. I've never heard it.

...in a recent email, aaron says that this will get a N.A. release in the new year.

william (william), Monday, 11 October 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

...panopticon thread here as well.

william (william), Monday, 11 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If anybody wants to grab the Oceanic remixes, I'm on $1$k now. Username b4rry1a$3r.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

What are the remix albums like?

Panopticon, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

As you'd expect, they sound like the remixers, so if you like their work, you'll like the album. The Plotkin remix is a Scorn-ish ambient dub, the Justin Broaderick one sounds like God, the Tim Hecker ones sound like "My Love Is Rotten to the Core" (which was also constructed out of processes guitar riffs), and so on.

nine months pass...
Old Man Gloom have apparently only played live a few times. Has anyone been lucky enough to see them?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 4 August 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

i still prefer celestial to isis's last two albums. it has that post-godflesh kinda mechanical crunch i like.

two years pass...

the institute to hold Seminars in March. mandatory .

Old Man Gloom is pleased to announce a handful of live shows to be held in March. These will be on the west coast of these united states, and will follow through the southwest, ending in Austin for South by Southwest.
After our 5 year sabbatical, the first show of this "tour" will be our 10th show, and as we are all supporters of the metric system, we are expecting total planetary alignment.
Dates and cities will be confirmed shortly.
Keep your eyes peeled.
Don't fuck this up, you'll regret it.

Wish I could see them. Not much chance of a Glasgow date ever unfortunately.
