Reuters: 95% of South Korean Music Retailers Have Closed in the Past Five Year

"While South Korea is not alone in seeing a downturn [in retail sales of music], the drop has been greatly accentuated and particularly deep because of the country's high-speed Internet access and a youth culture that uses some of the most sophisticated gadgets available. South Korea's broadband access per 100 residents is 23.17, almost triple that of the United States and five times that of EU members states."

Was the record-buying culture as strong in South Korea as it is in many Western countries? If not, then it wouldn't surprise me that people would stop buying records once a newer, snazzier technology came out, particularly in a culture that is so drawn to new, snazzy technologies.
