James Hassall, Monday, 11 October 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And he looks so thrilled to have had his photo taken.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No wonder they were so depressed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

A pretty sad photo, considering he was only 29 at the time. Then again, he did improve in later years. Syd in 1983:

James Hassell, Monday, 11 October 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's that photo of Syd on a bike, recently?

This taken around 2002

He looks pretty good here though:

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

SIGH. Said it before, will say it again, I hope when Syd leaves this world he does so calmly in bed, cared for and watched over by family and friends, and without a camera anywhere in sight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen that 1975 photo before!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Ned. It's just that every news story goes on about how syd is in 'bad' shape, all because he looks his age rather than cliff richardlike, off "Madcap" but with slightly greyer hair...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he wearing Vans in that photo?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

He's starting to resemble Alleister Crowley.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

syd looks good now -- healthy, well-dressed, certainly age-appropriate.

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also figuring that the fact that Those Other Guys In His Band make sure he gets his royalties helps in whatever care he needs and the like. Which is definitely a good thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The pic of Syd getting his newspaper is a really good one. He looks really fit and well in it(theres maybe no reason why he shouldnt be, for all we know he may have less problems than we think and is perfectly happy and just keeping out of the spotlight)

He simply looks his age, and many people it his age look far worse.
Lets all hope syd is happy and well, and his privacy is respected thats all we can ask for.

syd fan, Monday, 11 October 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The latest issue of Q (U2 on the cover) suggests that the Floyd are thinking of reforming to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Wish You Were Here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

better than reforming for dark side or the Wall, which is what I would have expected.

i'm starting to think syd is less bonkers than people would like to believe and just embarassed of his association with roger waters.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'll get a salad today

kephm (kephm), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

He did describe latter day pink floyd as "music by architecture students ... rather boring I would have thought"

Which is kinda OTM, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

He did describe latter day ...

Syd did?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That '75 picture gives me the same weird feeling as seeing those pictures of Elvis' bedroom. Like even though I'm very curious, I never should have looked.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We'll wallpaper the background with the Syd '75 photo.

Come to think of it, I was expecting to see someone a bit more morbidly obese than that. The stories made it seem like he was so much heftier.

We talked about it on another thread once, but maybe Bruce Willis could play Syd in the Floyd movie. Either that, or hire Garth Brooks.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He did describe latter day ...
Syd did?

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...) (webmail), October 11th, 2004. (link)

Yes. In his last interview (which at the time wasn't meant as his last ever interview obviously).

He also stated that he was working on ten singles (trans: ten songs that were like singles as opposed to the long stuff Pink Floyd was doing all the time now), and picked Slade as the band he thought would be big.

Admittedly, the interviewer did say that he pulled Syd's answers together, as a lot of the time he would be asked a question and would reply by answering the question before last. Its the one where he says "I'm totally together now, I even think I should be".

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Ned's post. It does seem that his money is well cared for by those guys. And he must've done OK by having "See Emily Play," "Bike" and so forth on that best-of that came out a few years ago.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

There you go. 1971? Just before Slade did make it.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah it's a long time since I've read that interview. He speaks in a similar way to the way your thoughts go when you're falling asleep, you knid of have a thought, but then it mutates into something else.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Watts: Why don't you go out on your own playing acoustic? I think you might be very successful.

Syd: Yeah...that's nice. Well, I've only got an electric. I've got a black Fender which needs replacing. I haven't got any blue jeans...I really prefer electric music.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

According to his family, Syd shaved his eyebrows before going to the "Shine On" sessions expressly so he would freak out the bastards who stole his band from him

Derridadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

can we get a current pic of gilmour up? just for comparison's sake?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The pic you don't want to see is Nick Mason - he really is hideous these days

Derridadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"these days"? Barrett was the only one who was ever good-looking out of the whole lot of them.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Gilmour was hot!

Roger Waters looks better these days than he did in the 60s, but that's not difficult.

I like this picture of the 5-man Floyd:

Poor Syd!

He always has nice wives

Derridadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

young roger waters looks like yancey.

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I always liked that five man photo because, well, it's almost obvious in its composition, isn't it?

"Can you four crowd in more and block out the guy in the middle?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's Yancey?

Derridadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yancey is an ilxor!
