Toots & The Maytals w/ Shaggy & Rahzel "Bam Bam"

I was worried abt Toots revisiting it, whetherhe would go too far towards all the '90s variants on the song and lose his own song. (the whole album sounded kinda scary) A positive comment is heartening.

i love Toots but when hearing abt the album i was wincing as it seemed like a desprate attempt for sales (unlike Toots in Memphis which really felt like a labor of love (excuse the unmeant bad reggae ref)

I was about to post the same. Unfortunately, he's now in an induced coma. Shit, I hope he pulls through. I saw him for the first time last year despite being a fan for god knows how long - even got a fist bump - and he was transcendent.

Just listened to "Time Tough" again. What a great songwriter, and what a perfect song for these times.

saw him live in 2012, he had so much energy, sang his songs for an hour straight without banter or breaks. “sweet & dandy” is one of my favorite songs ever.

Aw, that's terrible. I remember being really impressed by his contribution to the Radiohead reggae tribute album, of all things, his vocal performance in particular.

i remember blowing my dad’s mind by playing him the toots version of “country roads”. for him it was a cheesy john denver song, so this was like the ultimate flip.

Saw he and his band In January 2019. Fun greatest hits show, with Toots in strong voice & providing interesting between song banter. RIP

So many songs of his I love. His versions of Country Roads and Louie Louie are examples of how reggae can elevate anything, even songs that don't need it.

This was a real gut punch to see this morning. It sounded like he was improving after he was put into a medically-induced coma over a week ago, and after nearly two weeks in the hospital, I thought he was probably through the worst of it.

It was released almost 25 years ago, but this two-CD collection may still be the best one out there, as both an introduction and a concise summation:

But plenty of great albums as well: Funky Kingston (the original Jamaican album or the later U.S. version that's more like a compilation), In the Dark, Reggae Got Soul, Toots in Memphis...all those wonderful singles, even an appearance in the landmark film The Harder They Come...and of course a legendary live performer. I thought I'd never get the chance to see him after that schmuck hit him with a Vodka bottle, but fortunately he came back from the depression and health issues it caused. I finally got to see him last June, and he was so full of life, I would never have guessed that would be his last show in NYC. (He had been doing benefit shows on a regular basis at the Brooklyn Bowl for his foundation.)

I know many times I would play "Pressure Drop" off the Harder they Come soundtrack over and over. That grove is just so infectious, it could go on and on and the original is not all that long.

Toots had a cool voice, he had that cool growl in his sound when he really got going a bit like Bobby Blue Bland.

Just before lockdown he was sat in front of me on a plane and just basking in being in close proximity to him will undoubtedly be by far my highlight of 2020. Will never tire of his music. Super sad.

listening to 54-46 now and just wanted to say I quite liked this dude, and I hope his tombstone is engraved with something better than RIP TOOTS
