I had a dream last night where Chuck Eddy was my hair stylist...

and he lived in Indiana. apparently the rock crit thing wasn't enough to support him, so he was attending beauty school on the sly. i was impressed that he was able to get to the office in new york from the midwest with no one noticing.

he did a decent job on my hair.

frankE (frankE), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Did he make you look like Teena Marie?

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What did you talk about while he trimmed your hair?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

mostly about his dual life as stylist / rock crit. really, i was quite surprised.

frankE (frankE), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Was he playing Kix in the background?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

This is so weird! I swear that last night *I* had a dream that I was trying to get my hair own cut, and I was third in line when I walked into the place, but the Asian barber lady kept calling up people who got there after me to sit down first. When I finally complained, she told me I had to go to the *end* of the line. Eventually I just left. I can't remember if I went to beautician school after that or not, but I obviously could do a better job than *her*, so who knows? (If I DID go to Indiana to cut hair, though, it would probably either be Lafeyette to cut hair of people with hair like the young Axl Rose, or Gary to cut hair of people with hair like the young Michael Jackson. Greasy hair and a greasy shirt were John Cougar's destination, he told us once, so Seymour would obviously be off limits.)

chuck, Monday, 11 October 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

wow.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

omg. this was just last night, chuck. perhaps you did indeed depart your dream's barber shop only to enter the beauty school in my dream.

frankE (frankE), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

MORE WEIRDNESS: I swear I dreamed about Teena Marie last night! She was on TV and she was SUPER TINY.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

She was Teeny Marie!

chuck, Monday, 11 October 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

How 'bout Bloomington? [Obligatory tiresome MX-80 Sound name-drop]

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So somewhere MX-80 Sound and Teena Marie were jamming in a beauty parlor and we all dreamed of it while cutting each others' hair.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

but Chuck won't cut JC Mellencamp's hair even though JC did a whole album called Cuttin' Heads. Elitist.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

A guy in John Cougar Mellencamp’s touring band used to cut my hair when I was in grad school at IU-Bloomington. No shit. He was a decent stylist, too.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Something people don’t realise about Emma Freud, is that she got a big spider tattoo all over her head

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't go to Lafayette, that place is awful. Maybe you could go to Terre Haute to cut hair. They have square doughnuts there. I don't think there are any famous musicians, but my friend from Terre Haute met Hulk Hogan the other day. Square doughnuts!

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

SQUAGELS

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I grew up a Hoosier. Everything is square there. Terre Haute smells. Better to cut hair Ft. Wayne.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Terre Haute actually does smell really bad. Hulk Hogan!

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

My cousin Michelle met Hulk Hogan once in the 80s. She and her friend were pointing and giggling at him, and he turned to them and gave them the thumbs up and said, "Thumbs up, girls!"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I ran into Fabio in the Bristol Farms on Sunset Strip this summer. He smelled bad. And needed a haircut.

These came in handy on lonely Friday nights when I was in high school.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

are you from the haute, bro?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Grew up near there, though.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Monday, 11 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So if Sir Chuck opens his own hair shop and decided (with his obviously huge contact list) that he needed a superstar barbershop quartet-what four?

hmmmm?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

and what would the shop be called?

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"beauty school dropout"

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry about sting

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Teena Marie *was* on TV last night. I saw her being interviewed on "Showtime Live At The Apollo." Look like too many square doughtnusts (I want some!), but her hair was perfect. Then she went on stage and did "Square Biz." What should Chuck's hairstyles be called? Perhaps the Hoosier wave (amber waves of grain, or is that too Nebraska), The Funhouse, the Ratt (round and round), the Philly Pixie? The Chicago Boxcar (stolen from Tom Wolfe, but he never did anything with it but draw it, helpfully enough).

Don, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fabulous Poodles had a song about a haircut called the "Chicago boxcar, Boston back", but I don't know if that was the same style as the Tom Wolfe one. (Roger Miller's "third boxcar, midnight train, destination Bangor, Maine" was definitely something completely different, though, I think.)

chuck, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever his signature fade turns out to look like, it should be called the Hoosier Daddy.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"when your head's too heavy ... send for eddy"

Frank Reader (nabisco), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(Wow, chuck, you are one of the only other people besides me to have mentioned the Fabulous Poodles on ILM.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you could call your shop Hair Meddle, since hair styling shops always use bad puns.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand the Jody Miller stopped sending her son to Chuck's salon after the school said he couldn't come back unless he wore his hair like before.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the Five Man Electrical Band, Cowsills, and Talking Heads, but you've stumped me on the rest.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also offer all of the cuts on the cover of *Some Girls,* duh.

chuck, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Who's to Care if I Grow My Hair to the Sky?
I was totally trying to figure out a way to throw that reference onto this trhead.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the Accidental Evolution, the Occidental Evolution, the Lancelot Link, the Fade To Black, Gravity's Angle, Gravity's Rainbow (you know you're gonna have to dye), The Curley Schaffel, the Satchel Pageboy, the Riff Quiff: gett 'em now at Mistachuck's Hairmageddon.

Don, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

buck's frizz?

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the momnpop record stores around here now sell downloads, song by song or album by album. I think you should use your Biz connections to sell download hairstyles(could even be a chain someday, like Rhapsody at BestBuy, but let's not jump the gun). Could be like "Omg, I shaved my head to look like David Cross, and my girlfriend kicked me out! I need hair NOW!"

Don, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

How much for the '83 Donnie Purcell?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ian Hunter (short back & sides)
The Blonde Redhead
The Platinum Blonde
The Blonde on Blonde
The Original Baldhead
The Longhaired Sucka

and this seems like a good place to say that "Perms, Baldheads, Afros & Dreads" by the Analog Brothers is still a great song.
