For the country stuff I usually put on:- Willie Nelson's Greatest Hits- Johnny Cash - Folsum Prison and San Quentin
The other stuff:- The White Album... An album I don't normally think to listen to, but that I love. It seems to fit spring/fall road trips better than Summer/Winter- Beatles For Sale. Yes you read that right.- I normally can't stand the Dead, except on road trips. That live Europe 1970something album's alright.- Frank Zappa - Hot Rats and Wakka Jawaka. And live At the Filmore's great too.
Plus just about any good rock music with a country twinge is great. Beggar's Banquet is great Road Trip music.
Also, these are more "open road" albums. When entering a big city, especially at night, nothing beats Trans-Europe Express. And now that I mention it, it'll be hours before I get it unstuck from my head, which is alright.
That said, I've never tried the Boredoms on a road trip. I'm headed from Memphis to Birmingham (Bammy not England) in a couple hours to see the Pixies tonight. I may have to test drive Super Ae or something.

How about Superpitcher's Here Comes Love and Cliff Martinez's Solaris soundtrack, for those late night neon legs.

OR maybe you should get boredoms, os mutantes, and fela kuti, so you can remember all the inhabited continents besides north america, as you (sort of) drive across north america.
