i've just picked up his first album, '3' and it's incredible - mellow through frenetic funk/dance stuff, very sample-heavy, like the rhythms are almost all made out of found sounds, despite being very drum-y. Track 3, 'world machine', begins with cartoon samples, moves on to porno stuff then breaks into action movie samples (screeches, explosions), all forming part of the rhythm...

That's on the 'a' side (tracks 1-4, there's a record scratch-cutout-needle sound at the end of track 4 and start of track 5); the 'b' side is much more mellow but by no means less interesting, a beautiful folky thing on 'haiduk'; some vocals on 'shopping malls' sounding vaguely Eno on the B side of Before and After Science; then 'oscillator,' possibly the most incredible bit of loopy ambient music ever written, plucked guitar in 7/4 over a reversed pop song ('Oh Monday Monday..') x infinity.

well, it came out in 1998 and the distributors (www.flavour.co.nz) tell me it's about to be deleted. someone other than me make some noise about this. Or sjd himself. (www.sjd.co.nz)

nah, lost soul music isn't even half so great, and from what I can glean, southern lights is even less great.. slicker, and poppier (one of the tracks off it, 'superman you're crying,' is getting national airplay on our national music television channel C4) but not as interesting.
