i got a hankering to listen to this today...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. Amazing record. One of the last to really appear out of nowhere and knock me on my posterior. Never picked up their follow-up album, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere inbetween. As discussed vaguelly the other week, I don't think they're particularly good when it comes to melodies, hooks or choruses, but they're certainly sonically very very nice to listen to, good grooves, good production (although this was somewhat overcooked on the second album). I had "The Cedar EP" on vinyl and still love "The Cedar Room". "Sea Song" irritated me, because I thought it was a bad choice as a single - there's no 'song' to speak of, bugger-all chorus or anything to sing with. Had it been just an album track or a b-side I would have loved it, but it's use as a single was daft, I thought. "Rise" is similarly hook/chorusless but I love it because it was never intended as an attention-grabber. "Firesuite" is great, "Catch The Sun" is very good (it certainly stood o8ut when I saw them live before the album was released), "Here It Comes" is alright although I really dislike the other guy's voice, but there are too many other misty ballads that go nowhere and do nothing like "The Man Who Told Everything" and the one about the house burning down. Plus "Break Me Gently" was so much better as a 90-second b-side than as a 6-minute album track.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

There's an amazing version of Warren Zevon's 'Hit The Ground Running' on Lost Sides which makes me think they might be some good after all. I do quite like The Last Broadcast too. Nick's right about trying to get by on atmospherics alone..

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

trying to get by on atmospherics alone..

which i would personally be happy with (were it the absolute truth) as i have no great desire for verse/bridge/chorus formulae much of the time and it's what sets them apart from the myriad of more pedestrian British guitar bands for me (plus that thing i mentioned on The Embrace Wars thread about aligning themselves with the Manchester continuum thing more eagerly).

the first half of this album is great for that atmospheric strain (despite the supposed lack of hook and chorus (there's an adeqaute degree of melodic elements, your harmonica solos etc.) i find 'Rise' and 'Sea Song' difficult to get out of my head) but the second half doesn't engage me as much (apart from the almost ridiculous gloom of The Man Who Told Everything - yet the actually positive lyrics save it from being an unappealing exercise in tedious bedwettery - give me this over Coldplay still). perhaps Lost Souls is better, and there are two other versions of Firesuite that outstrip the album version (i have them down as 'Suite Noise' and 'Firesuite (Noise version)' but not sure where the latter comes from - it's different from 'Suite Noise' tho as only one has the eerie 'sinking' intro

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i've got the DVD which has a great little Sub Sub documentary on it. there's footage of a track they recorded with Bernard Sumner tho it doesn't sound that different from Electronic stuff. i really want to hear Full Fathom Five and especially The Delta Tapes if anyone has them. i've found tracks like 'Crunch' and 'Lost In Watts' on slsk but not the full lost album i don't think.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. And the think the second album is classic, too. And I was just wondering when they were planning to release their third classic album.

The first time I saw Doves, I think the Strokes were opening! But while my wife and I thought the Strokes were totally forgettable (go figure) we were both blown away by the Doves.

x-post That "Hit the Ground Running" song isn't a Zevon cover so much as it's a Doves song built around the chorus from "Werewolves of London." Kind of like how on the first (second?) Doves album, a song is built around the melody from a King Crimson track (it's even credited).

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh thanx Josh.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The next Doves album is due February 2005, that is what they old BBC 6 Music back in May.

Albumvote.co.uk - also list it as February 2005

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

A band that I appreciate rather than love. Mind you, drawing on Swervedriver and early Verve is no bad thing in my mind. I have a feeling Josh might have distinguished the key bit in that I've not seen them live, which might help make them stand out more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That "Hit the Ground Running" song isn't a Zevon cover so much as it's a Doves song built around the chorus from "Werewolves of London." Kind of like how on the first (second?) Doves album, a song is built around the melody from a King Crimson track (it's even credited).

That's the 'M62 Song' and King Crimson's 'Moonchild'. I've noticed that Doves do that sort of creative filching a fair bit. Like 'There Goes The Fear' nicks the melody of 'Whiter Shade of Pale' in the build up to the chorus, then it pinches a chunk of 'Sound and Vision' for the do-do-do bit towards the end.

Anyhow, can't really say I'm a big fan, they sort of sound like a bunch of different mediocre bands that were around 15 years ago, and most of the time I'm thinking that we should have moved way on beyond that stuff by now...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanted to like this album more than i did. listened to it several times but apart from a few tracks it didn't quite make it for me. almost power-pop or something. i hear what they were trying to do but as mentioned above, atmospherics over actual songs/melodies. as i did with the two shins albums, i burned the best tracks and traded--for a couple of joe tex albums on epic, i came out the winner in that deal...

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Great album, although they got even better on the followup.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Cedar Room is a Bic-flicking good tune.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I was peer-pressured once to trade my "Bee Thousand" CD for this, 'cause I "already have it on vinyl, dude...C'MON".

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

A fantastic record. It is an amazing winter record.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Doves - Some Cities

According to Pause & Play's On The CD Front the forthcoming Doves album is titled: Some Cities that is scheduled for release in February. [US release is Feb 15th, so the UK release may be Feb 14th or even earlier?]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 8 November 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't wait...has anyone heard an advance?

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait either... Lost Souls has held up really well. Last Broadcast not so well.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Last Broadcast after hearing "There Goes the Fear" and was pretty disappointed. So is Lost Souls the one to check out?

darin (darin), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely a better album. If nothing else than for"Cedar Room," which is probably the best thing they recorded.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

LOST SIDES

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

... is not all that great is it? i listened to it once. meh. really, tell me i should go back and listen again.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

er, you should go back and listen again? you'd have to take half of Souls and half of Sides for what i'd consider a perfect collection. and if you can fit M62 Song and There Goes The Fear on the end of that then bargain.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

so very persuasive.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They should steer clear of 6/8 time.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

when Last Broadcast came out there was a lot of "They're ripping off the House of Love" hate on here. right now ILM feels odd, cos there's a Stina, Doves and Vitalic thread in the top 10. you all love me. fules.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently new album is sounding quite 'motownish'...?

doomie x, Thursday, 11 November 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that could either mean the bluesy wallowing of 'here it comes' or the 'funky strut' of Sub Sub. or it could mean something else (more gospel choirs? erk).

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 11 November 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
"Cedar Room" -- returning to this after a few years, the first time I heard it was when they opened for The Webb Bros. in Washington DC four years ago. It struck me then as it does now -- extremely facile and blokey but all but impossible to deny. Bonus: it even has Bono yelping "WIIIIDE AWAAAAAAKE!" around the four-and-a-half minute mark.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

this is a great record and i could basically listen to firesuite on repeat for the rest of my life

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 10:12 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

this is a tremendous album. incredibly solid all the way through. sadly they bombed with their second record and have been on the slide ever since.

charlie h, Thursday, 13 October 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

always mean to get back to every doves album and always forget

fauxmarc, Thursday, 13 October 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

I concur with Charlie, the second album really turned me off to them. Has there been no highlights in the subsequent releases on the same level as their debut?

(Oh, I see there was a best-of last year, and it's on Spotify)

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 14 October 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

i remember being really excited for 'the last broadcast' and it just left me cold, track after unremarkable track. from memory "the sulphur man" was ace -- a really moody, disconsolate piece, but the rest was languid and forgettable, a far cry from the spirited debut.

charlie h, Friday, 14 October 2011 02:56 (fourteen years ago)

you guys are so wrong, The Last Broadcast has the much better singles. it really was with the third album that they started to lose it and i still never really heard their last album.

Bee OK, Friday, 14 October 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

ha

i like Lost Souls a lot but don't think it has as many good songs as this album has.

Doves: The Last Broadcast poll

Bee OK, Friday, 14 October 2011 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

haha, my stance is exactly the same in that thread. but i guess it's only been two years.

charlie h, Friday, 14 October 2011 06:06 (fourteen years ago)

five months pass...

i thought i was not that big a fan of doves.
then in '05 i rushed to see them perform on the pyramid stage @ glastonbury.
fuckin' immense.
was a seriously emotional experience ..
could have been the red wine of course, but still ..
and yes, i would agree that cedar tree is the best thing they ever did.
oh, and that lost sides collection is worthy for the soulsavers remix alone which just floors me every time.

mark e, Saturday, 7 April 2012 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

First two albums plus Lost Sides are all great. Have trouble remembering anything from the third album or beyond, don't know what went wrong.
