ILM Ticks We Find Annoying

Here's a chance to complain about ILM ticks you find annoying in hopes that posters will read this thread and stop doing these things.

For instance, I am bothered when people summon albums or songs to a thread, like they're sentient beings that will come running in and announce themselves.

Thread: Concept Albums
Post: The Who's Tommy to thread!

Why don't you just say "The Who's Tommy"? Less typing and makes more sense. Any time you can type less and be clearer you're cooking with gas.

I supposed it's a different story if, say, it's a My Bloody Valentine thread and someone says "Ned Ragget to thread!" because then, hey, you're saying "Come on in, Ned, they're talking about your favorite band!" Still annoying, maybe, but less so.

Now you post some of yours...

people disagreeing with me

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

even when i am right

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I strongly disagree with Freelance Hiveminder.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

he's right, though.

Annoying Pitchfork writer to threa.... oh.

___ (___), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a tick I actually miss -- threads dedicated to upcoming noise shows in NYC featuring bands I've (mostly) never heard of.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

'... to thread' drives me nuts, for some reason.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we retire "on the money/OTM"?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

and "x in y shockah/non-shockah".

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

JtN has been trying to enforce that retirement for about 2 years, I think.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

what a turn up for the books!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

people getting "ticks" and "tics" confused really annoys me.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite.

Tock.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew my question would annoy some people, but I was willing to take that risk (tics/ticks...shit.)

TEH GAY

corny indie fuxxors

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

'teh' in general has surely had its day. i don't know why it annoys me so much.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it'd be more interesting to find out what ILM Ticks We Don't Find Annoying. It'd probably be a shorter thread.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Anti-"rockism" is by far the most annoying thing about ILM.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really get "teh" and "hi dere", but I wouldn't call them annoying ticks.

Anti-"rockism" is by far the most annoying thing about ILM.

This is entirely accurate.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm no fascist so I'm not going to demand that anybody stop doing anything. And personally, I'm quite fond of those nutty terms (shockah, OTM) peculiar to the ILM lexicon (altho "teh" still baffles me.) But I agree that threads relevent only to residents of a single city (including those advertising, yep, upcoming NYC noise shows) are pretty annoying & useless for non-residents.

And it kinda bothers me when ILMers who know each other address one another using their actual names, when that name isn't apparent on screen. (Tho I guess there's no choice when it comes to Jon Williams or anybody else who routinely adopts an unpronounceable/incomprehensible screen name.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

There should be more comparisons to fascism and Hitler on ILM

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

there should be more talk of whales on ILM

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it kinda bothers me when ILMers who know each other address one another using their actual names, when that name isn't apparent on screen
I find this helpful. Especially if it's someone who's posts I enjoyed or found useful when they used to use their previous/real name. There's no time to read every post on every thread, but I'll take the time with people I 'know'.

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"(Tho I guess there's no choice when it comes to Jon Williams or anybody else who routinely adopts an unpronounceable/incomprehensible screen name.)"

Copy > Paste.

RONAN IN OTM SHOCKAH

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect that Ronan's VDU may be upside down.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ned Ragget to thread!"

I'd respond more if you spelled my name right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm relatively new here, but I can't stand the jokey threads -- the threads where the whole point is just a one-dimensional joke (that goes on and on and on).

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Whales are boring. I mean, most of them are plankton feeders and just float along, eating and being dull.

The only thing I find really fascinating about whales are their humongous penises. I mean GODDAMN.

Barnacles have fascinating penises too, the largest in proportion to body size in the animal kingdom i believe. Pretty impresive for appendages which are basically huge prehensile fuck-tentacles.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

whales are awesome, haven't you seen Star Trek IV?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously could've used more fuck-tentacles.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine a sequence with Spock fighting those for his life!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine a sequence where Spock successfully completes a Vulcan mind-meld and actually takes control of those huge prehensile fuck-tentacles!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

actually there should be more talk of whales and star trek: the next generation

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you hear the jackwhales singing?

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The title of that book sounds like a really rubbish first draft of the first lines of The Carpenters' 'Close to you'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It might easily have been a better version, if it had gone on to mention huge prehensile fuck-tentacles.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I expect Richard and Karen wanted to save those lines for "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" 'though.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Why do whales penises appear?"

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"...every time NickB posts here?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What was this thread about again?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Huge prehensile fuck-tentacles.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The scariest thing I've ever read about in my life was the existence of 101 dalmations tentacle p0rn.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The tick I find most annoying is the pointless hijacking of threads.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

A non-annoying tick:

Thanks I'm outta here...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

When ILMers use those music journalist words like "effort", "moniker" etc it's kind of irritating.

everything, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite a few ILMers are music journalists.

Not that that's any sort of an excuse of course.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

people getting "ticks" and "tics" confused really annoys me.

the misspelling of "vocal cords" as "vocal chords" really annoys me. one voice cannot produce a chord. even overtone singing only produces two-note intervals.

figured i'd throw that in since this is a music board.

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"meh"

dave q, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Titling threads, "This is the thread where we ...." may have been cute once.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I like all the things that are cited here as annoying, not because they annoy somebody enough to start a thread (all though that's in their favor, since threads about annoyances are annoying). Especilly like threads re bands appearing in another city, iPOD parties, stuff I'll never grt to, but at least I can read about it. (So much news is like Top 20 radio now, the same items all day long, and only of National/International alleged interest, like old Eminem "vs." older Michael ho-hum) Also, I like when threads turn from one thing into another, except for tentacles.

don, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"threads relevent only to residents of a single city (including those advertising, yep, upcoming NYC noise shows) are pretty annoying & useless for non-residents. "

I apprieciate these threads when they are about my area, and I don't look at most of the ones that aren't. No big deal. Its not as if I look at all the threads anyway. I mean, threads about The Mission or Eminem or Eric Clapton are useless are useless for me, but maybe others are into them. So I just skip over them.

What's really annoying is checking out the page after about a day or so, and seeing no new threads or messages that interest me.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I see "OTM", it reminds me of Otm Shank, India's answer to Brian Dennehy

jedidiah (jedidiah), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, you can't let a thing like that drop without telling us more.

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I find forum specific syntax & phrases both amusing and creative! I must be wierd like that.

My only fear is accidentally using them elsewhere and instantly giving away my various affiliations to 'other' forums!

While I'm here, can someone explain x-post (in the ILM context)? I can't quite work this one out, doesn't seem to be the usenet meaning here.

This ILM tick... it vibrates?

i lurk on ilm (i lurk on ilm), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost means that there's at least one post separating yours and the one you're responding to. it can also mean that someone just posted the same answer/thought you were going to post (if someone posts while you're in the middle of typing, you'll see their post before yours gets submitted).

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Its taken me a couple of years, but now I know the meaning of x-post!

Yea!

hector (hector), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno if its a tic but i kind of find it annoying when a subject comes up and there maybe newbies at the heart of it but its something that has been discussed before and some old ilm git turns the thread into a whinge fest about the shocking ignorance of these new ilmers or makes glib and disparaging comments or hijacks the thread into a joke.

course since a lot of the old guard jumped ship or went undercover this happens less often.

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 14 October 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The "...to thread" thing is the only thing that annoys me, and even then, only a little bit. Everything else is fine, or even funny in some cases.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 October 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Aristotle Onassis did quite a bit of semi-secret whaling on his return runs, before it became a big world issue.
He really thought he was the man too. His gold plated super-yacht had the obligatory secret basement bar, and this man's arrogance extended to the use of whales' penises as bar stools.

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 14 October 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

is there a shitty French house act that the ILM hivemind doesn't go over the cliff for?

Demon

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 14 October 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

which French house acts do the "ILM Hivemind" go "over the cliff for"?

Daft Punk and who?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

brace yourself readers, to discover a world of "French house" acts you never knew were French house at all!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

this ILM Hiveminder has so much lemming love to give (for Braxe & Falke, De Crecy, Cassius, Crydajam, Linus Loves, Syndicated Peoples etc.)

it's more the Kompakty stuff i don't always get the cliffjumping for, but i wouldn't call it a tick

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

if the "hivemind" is me and you Steve maybe!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)
