Jazz Times tells us:

"This November, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the documentary Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue on DVD, which documents the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival performance by Davis, where he and his band performed before 600,000 fans. Directed by award-winning producer Murray Lerner, also featured are interviews of participating musicians Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland and Gary Bartz as well as admirers Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell.

"When Davis released Bitches Brew in 1970, some critics accused Davis of selling out, while consumers kept his album on the top of the charts. Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue examines the next step in the process -- performing live.

"The DVD has a running time of 73 minutes and is presented in 5.1 surround sound. It will be available November 16 for a suggested retail price of $19.98.

If you want to catch the flick before the DVD hits, Miles Electric will be screened October 9 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the New York Film Festival, followed by a panel discussion, "Impact of Miles Davis on American Music," at 9:30 p.m."

Not necessarily 70s Miles at his peak—as I recall, Wight wasn't his best show—but this is a big deal all the same.

YES YES YES YES YE YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

I've always been bothered by how the Isle of Wight DVD only used like a teeny bit of the footage of their performance as sort of a lead-in to the second disc, meanwhile all kinds of corny hairy hippy cockrock fuckers get all kinds of nnreeerrrneenerneener guitar solo time all over the thing. HOORAY.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, so what band is this? Three keyboards/Dave Holland/Gary Bartz/Jack deJohnette? Airto?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Airto was in the band yet, but otherwise that sounds right.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

When did the festival take place? Just because Airto is on It's About That Time Fillmore West thing, which is March 1970.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Well he might be. I don't know. Gimme a break, I wasn't even born yet!

;)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, sorry Nick. It's not like I'm even some electric Miles freak (I just, um, used to be). There are only a few of those records that I listen to anymore.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

October 9??? I hope you mean October 19.

I've seen the Isle of Wight festival movie -- only one Miles tune I think, but great film. It's like the anti-Woodstock.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Isle of Wight band was Miles, Gary Bartz, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and Airto.

I gotta get this thing. I wonder if Sony is gonna release it on CD?

hotness.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so the same band as on Black Beauty except Gary Bartz instead of Steve Grossman (which is definitely a step up). Sweet.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I am SUPERJAZZED!
no really I am. Is this the first official release of live footage from Miles' electric period? I've only seen snippets of things before, it'll be great to see an entire performance. While the Isle of Wight documentary is indeed fabulous, Miles is just a footnote in it...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

There's definitely some video out there of Miles ca. 1973 or 1974 — I saw clips of it sometime back. As much as I want this DVD, I'm kinda licking my chops for that one...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Downtown Music Gallery has a bunch of live Miles DVDs from the mid-70s. All bootlegs, of course.

I've got a performance, about 25 minutes, with Pete Cosey & Michael Henderson c. 1973-74 that's just out of this world. Miles plays organ on it, too. He does this stop/start thing with his conga player that gets the rest of the band all worked up and it really is great.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Got it on monday. I've been watching it once a night, and it's been tough not to bring it in to work with me to watch it more.

Feels pointless to even talk about it, if you have the slightest interest in this, just buy it tonight. The documentary is fair enough, but just skip straight to the track before the set that introduces the musicians, then watch the set. Don't wait.

phil freeman, do you have any of those bootleg DVDs from DMG? any picks out of those?

finally getting to see the group dynamics after years of just listening... head is open

(Jon L), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I got to see it at the new york film festival and it's INCREDIBLE. I'd advise watching the documentary, too. There's some great stuff in there, especially the rowdiest beat-box I've ever seen by Miles' percussionist and hancock's solo tribute to Miles on his Rhodes.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Airto's beatboxing is amazing. Had no idea just how beautifully out of his mind that guy is.

Lots of amazing things in the documentary, brief clips of Miles with Pete Cosey, video of a 1973 Tokyo TV appearence, the Jack Johnson documentary.

(Jon L), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

still watching this once a day.

(Jon L), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

watched it once and dreamt about it all night afterwards...So very tremendously good, it's really gotten me all shaken up I must say.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(Jon L), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)
