1. A Hook. It's gotta have a hook. It's gotta be catchy and have a simple, evident theme.
2. Lyrics are helpful, but not totally necessary.
3. If there are lyrics, it helps to have a chorus.
4. If there is a chorus, it should be sung by a lady.
5. If it can't be sung by a lady, a broad or a dame will suffice.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason I understood Huck's 5 as meaning it should be sung by a great dane.

Marmaduke sings the Andy Williams Songbook!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And where do Huk-L's arguments leave "Blue Monday"?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello OTM, possibly, in that these things may only be subjective ultimately

6). Cowbell on the chorus.
7). If you need a hook, consider going to the related minor chord from wherever you start. G to Em never disappoints.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

1) It should have a melody, as in a verse, bridge and chorus
2) It should have some nice and interesting chord changes, a unusual but not so unusual it isn't catchy to the listener
3) It should have male vocals and nothing but male vocals

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 14 October 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

4) It should also have some (male, of course) multi-voiced vocal harmonies in the chorus, preferrably mixed in wide stereo

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 14 October 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There is only one important aspect of a good pop song:
1. It is catchy.

It should have male vocals and nothing but male vocals

since you appear to be completely serious, i'm dying to hear your reasoning for this, geir.

Mainly a response to 4. in Huk-L's response upthread.

But, really, generally I tend to prefer music with male vocals only.
