Does anyone know if this is available in the states yet? I just downloaded half of this (sorry Pitchfork!) and it's blowing me away. I don't usually respond to psych stuff , but it's so, so, so good. Anyone else been listening to this?

I thought it was great also. The stylus review today reminded me of it and I'll probably give it another spin tonight. Wouldn't know where to find it in the states though.

Wow! I don't really hear SFA at all. Check "Panda" and "Ta Det Lugnt" - I think the hooks in these songs are just huge.

Buy the new reissue of Pugh Rogefeldt's "Ja da a Da" from 1969 -- to me it's a blueprint for what Dungen are trying to do in some ways. I wasnt blown away as much as most by Dungen, but the live show was pretty decent here in NYC.

This album is incredible. I don't hear the SFA either. The sixth song sounds like The Soft Machine. This might be the best album of the year.

this has been picked up in uk by memphis industries so should be a lot easier to find ..

just made my way through it .. i have to say just as i was geting a little fed up somewhere along the way, something clicked inside me and i started to really enjoy it ..

i certainly dont hear much SFA in there ..

I downloaded the Brainwashed clips of the first record, and liked them because they sounded collagey and cut-up. Found a used copy of the 'ta det lugnt' and went for it, but this is a very straight ahead psych-garage record... reminds me a great deal of the Pretty Things

I'm not too into much of this, it's not bad though, and there is one fantastic song, track 4 'Du E For Fin For Mig' (the one with the strings).

Is the first record weirder and more cut-up Faust Tapes-y?

I initially was a touch underwhelmed with the reissue of the first self-titled album but actually on second listen it's a good all over the place psych/jam/etc. thing. Didn't hear much in the way of specific cut-ups, though.

There's also some related band called the Works which has put out a more straightforward retrofreak/Nuggets thing -- surprisingly good, in that every song has a little something extra to it (strong vocals, really good guitar solo, etc.) which keeps it from being generic.

I saw these guys twice recently-- once in Portland and once in Seattle, and they killed it. Fairly short set, but it was enough. Anyone else catch them on this current tour?

I just got this, and I'm loving it. I love that there are a few parts where, if you only heard a minute out of context from the whole album, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a jazz album.

I like it. If you told me it was some B-level psych band from the late 60s/early 70s, I'd totally believe you. Which make me like it both more and less in a way.

Has anyone heard the self-titled album by The Works (which seems to be pretty unsoulse3kable)? Apparently the Works shares members with Dungen and is also nice psych stuff... anybody?

Jaymc, the jazziness you hear is maybe what made me make the Soft Machine comparison. The Canterbury bands wove lots of jazz into the psych.

I do, though not as much as at first. I was all about it up through last year's holiday listening session, when it first occured to me the dude's vocals are a bit annoying. Having a high tolerance for that, though, I still listen to it occassionally, mostly on jukebox shuffle. I'm glad you like it. I hope it has more staying power with you than it's had with me. If I'm remembering correctly, you've seen them, right, and I bet that would make a difference.

You know what, forget it, I take my complaint back. Listening to "Lipsull" right now, I realize the vocals only bug me sometimes. He sings this one less stridently, more engagingly.

I have the Works album and like it fairly well, but I haven't really listened to it a lot.
I can really hear the jazz connection someone upthread made. It's more prononced on the earlier stuff.
Conan's shows are no longer replayed on cnbc the next day, are they?

Dungen on Conan? Thank you, that I must see. What they might lack in sound live, compared to the album, they sure make up for with some great jamming.

And Ta Det Lugnt is of course amazing, but everyone knows that by now.

i loved "ta det lungt" when I first heard it but i'm not really bothered about this for some reason. I think once the initial awe of this band wears off there's not a lot to go back to :-(

it's got some good jammage and instrumental action, but the songwriting seems too samey to me. not that that's a bad thing. still sounds good. i don't know what i was expecting. i only listened once. i really really liked that last album though and this one just didn't hit me as hard.

The first two tracks sounded pretty fracking awesome in the car. The fact that it's such a specific retro (psyche) sound suggests it'll age well depending on your long-term tastes. Sounds a bit like Caribou's 4-piece live band sans synth, or Os Mutantes, or Nuggets.

There's no denying it's great (especially the first couple of songs yeah), but I don't know if I'd be able to enjoy it as much these days since there were a fair few other bands who came after and did a similar take on the sound which I think I overloaded on. Still, it's a very good album.

Ach you know, the whole continuum from Ariel Pink through Tame Impala, freak-folk to chillwave. I realise it's pretty unfair to make these comparisons but when I heard Ta Det Lungt in 2004 it sounded so incredibly fresh and since then there's been a lot of stuff going along (fairly) similar aesthetic lines. But don't let me spoil it for such petty reasons. I'm gonna dig it out tonight I think.
