II tha X-treme is one of the most emotionally complex rap albums i have ever heard. Has it hit anyone really hard?

Daniel Mitha (ykeo), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Buying it as soon as I can.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

YOu're gonna get in trouble for calling it "rap" instead of "hip-hop".

MD, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

according to the people at Groove Merchant in SF, Robin WIlliams came in last week looking for this record

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha! Awesome!

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Robin Williams was taking MAX/MSP lessons at ROBOTSPEAK.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

To save what little assurance I have that I'm at least ahead of stars of Mork And Mindy when it comes to rap, I'm going to assume that Robin is shooting a film with Devon Sawa, and while trying to find him so they could go over some script changes, he walked into a rap store and asked if they'd seen Devon, the dude...from Final Destination.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

a rap store

or whatever Groove Merchant is, I haven't been to SF in years.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It is well known around SF that RW is one hip dude. He held a microhouse party at his sea cliff mansion back in...what, 1983?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I was there.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

To get a Club Paradise poster signed.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve Guttenberg predicted the advent of grime and I laughed and laughed at him.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Kooter Brown" immediately comes to mind as, likely, the most affecting squirrely soul sample yet.

Daniel Mitha (ykeo), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not really sure whats so "emotionally complex" about it, it's really fun and funny though...lighthearted mixed w/ some more touching moments i suppose but for the most part it seems humerous and drowned in a cloud of weed smoke. Its one of my favorite albums of the year.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I defy you to name a better hip hop album released this year.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Although Pretty Toney is closing in now that I've really gotten into it.
"Tush" is gonna be in my top ten singles.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean just that - emotionally complex. the lightness is made that much more, i dunno, admirable, by his full acceptance for his various fuck ups. sure there's regret and sadness but not a shred of bitterness.

Daniel Mitha (ykeo), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say less "emotionally complex" and maybe more mature?
Or as mature as an album called "2 tha xtreme" can be.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

alright, biggie was 'ready to die' but on his own nihilistic terms. devin simply sits back and rolls a sweet while the plane he's on is going down - all the while chastising the other screaming passengers for not getting their shit together on the ground. this seems to be something more than mere maturity. either way, it's just semantics.

Daniel Mitha (ykeo), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's what the kids call "high".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally agree with the title of this thread.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

as juelz santana would say, "okay, okay, okay."
i could be digging a bit deeper than need be (weed be).

Daniel Mitha (ykeo), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what're the beats like? would you listen to an instrumental version of the album?
I'm going to the store in a lil while and might buy this and pretty tony.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I give it a #2 so far, after madvilliany.

top hip hop full lengths in 04

1. madvilliany
2. to the extreme
3. grind date
4. pretty tony
5. college dropout
6.three sinister syllables

still waiting to hear mm...food and the new danger.

Antonio DePietro, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Is grind date that good? Should I go buy immediately?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

If you liked AOL:Bionix (which I sure did) you should get The Grind Date (which I'm glad I did)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Two Rick Wakeman samples

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(well one's yes)

and Two Jermaine Jackson samples

(well one's a jackson 5 song he didn't write and one's a Pulse song he wrote)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

what if you didn't like bionix?

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 14 October 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha token southern rap album of 2004!*

*I don't actually have a problem with that. But people, please spread the love to lil scrappy.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 14 October 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

or Petey Pablo or DBanner S&C

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it's pretty sad how few rap albums I've gotten this year, especially considering how much time I've spent listening to and writing about rap lately. at this rate, I've only got 2 or 3 hip hop albums in my list of favorites of the year so far, and they're pretty obvious picks. and I'm not even getting into the "not an album genre" argument at all, but when stuff I like is so easily accessible via radio/mixtapes, it's really hard for me to get motivated to cop albums I'm not already totally sold on.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I almost didn't pick up Chingo Bling when I saw it used for $6.99. but I'm glad I did, it's in the top 10 for sure, three different pseudonyms and they're all good

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Chingo Bling is great!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 14 October 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Getting better every time I hear it.

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't heard anything from this yet - what's the choice cut?

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Kooter Brown".

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

lil scrappys is better. i dont know about devin being THAT emotionally complex though.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Motha's pretty great. Fairly emotional and resigned.

danh (danh), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I hadn't heard ANY of this album until this weekend (when they played the afforementioned "Kooter Brown" on teh college radio as I was driving home late at night STONED TO THE BONE, and it was honestly the PERFECT ALIGNMENT OF SPACE AND TIME EVER).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious, this album makes me think of you for some reason.

take that as a compliment.

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

not to sounds like a jerk here, but don't drive around stoned, nick. it's sort of dangerous. thanks.

The Safety Asshole, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

thread title is dead on! these are the best weed-cloud hip-hop tracks since "I got 5 on it"-- like andre 3000 if he had crossed his goodie mob-leaning impulses with g-funk instead of going the cocktail jazz route.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate to say it but...it reminds me of why I used to like The Pharcyde!

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I love tracks with police radio on them.

I also like Roy Orbison, but that has nothing to do with this thread.

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm leaning to Pretty Toney now.
This is still aces.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I heart this album a bunch, I wrote a review of it a couple days ago that should be on stylus this week.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Just Tryin Ta Live" is very very good as well, for people who weren't aware of him previously.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(at this point I think it'd be more dangerous for Nick to drive around sober!)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Al the stutter-chorus thing KILLED me! I was DED from the stutter chorus! Ahhh!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

every time I hear Andre compare white tees to a nightgown I want to Google image search for the picture of him in a mumu that I'm sure is out there somewhere.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

i BANG in my mumu
i SLANG in my mumu

max, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I hate that it took me so long to come around to this album, one of my favorites of the past few years. I didn't even know there was a new one! Thanks ILM!

Andre's cartoon Class of 3000 is actually not bad! It seems way more appropriate a career choice than, um, anything since Aquemini.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious, this album makes me think of you for some reason.
take that as a compliment.

adam... (nordicskilla) on Monday, November 8, 2004 2:15 PM (2 years ago).

haha thanks Adam

deej, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

haha I wasn't even really dissing that album (I don't have it), I was just laughing at your earnest "for your consideration" cheerleading of it.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

jess why do i keep thinking ilm is the gong show and your on the panel ready with mallet in hand?

artdamages, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

I, too miss the days before i couched all statements in sardonic self-awareness

deej, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

how the fuck can you not love fila? i mean i haven't listened to it for 2 years or whatever, but its probably still good.

artdamages, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

To The Xtreme is top 50 material in my collection. The Dude is cool too.

On any given day, either one of these songs can take the place of my favorite song ever.

Doobie Ashtray

If you find yourself digging deeper then also check out the lp Fadanuf Fa Erybody by Odd Squad, its the group he was in previous to going solo iirc. Kind of a southern undervalued classic imo.

Now that I read through the thread I see that I basically repeated your sentiments, even down to the Odd Squad nod. We enjoy similar flavors it seems.

Its A Shame is great, love the intro into the drop with the wonky bass, and of course Devin's signature vocal scratching.
