I'm flashing back on the late 90s. And MY GOD. I miss the magic. It's so...CLINTON-ERA. So pre-9/11!

like, I was sayin, Puffy = worst thing to ever happen to hip-hop.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

where's that picture of him jet-skiing in a fur coat?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hip-hop totally recovered man. Let us look back and pretend we weren't annoyed as fuck while it was going down.

x-post: I couldn't find it last time I was looking!

there was a time where no one would bat an eye at this image. It was just another Puffy moment.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a man whose MTV Video Awards Performances are so gargantuan that artists like Sting and Usher are used as props.

ew.

was that really necessary?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I said it was evil (and didn't i-link it for that reason)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, now, he thought he told you he won't stop.

Eh-eh, eh-eh.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Diddy is still a trip but it's the pre-Forever era that brings a tear to my eye when I think about it.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

well, Forever was pretty nutty, too. shit, the first single was a completely straightforward cover of "Public Enemy #1". stills of that video would be perfect for this thread.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You remember "P.E. Number One"? With that "Planet Rock" break in the middle?

Yeah, that was the beginning of the end.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops.

The Luniz-sampling (I think) "Satisfy You" was pretty lame as well.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the best part of the "PE#1" video: reclining in a gigantic furcoat, holding up the "#1" index finger, and then looking at it with this confused expression.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)
oh it's ALL been nutty. I mean shit, "Bad Boy For Life"? His rap on the Mario Winans track? "Satisfy You?" "Hate Me Now?" I'm just saying that pre-Forever his career was so outrageous and at the same time accepted. He was...

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I like it better that you have to click (and it is work safe).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

SPIN had a round-table discussion of Puffy's big tour with Jay-Z, Busta, Lil Kim and Foxy Brown and the rest. He could have his biggest hit to date and people wouldn't give him the same attention. He was inexplicable, breaking every critical assumption about rap (good and bad) and people were just trying to keep up.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, agreed.

I actually like the Mario Winans track a good deal, even though his rap is kinda questionable (though ending with "holla" is always classy). But god, "Hate Me Now" was the worst thing ever. How he could drag Nas along with him (and that fucking fiasco of a video) is beyond me.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

My good friend Herbert Herbert says that if an artist ever makes a video where they're performing on the roof of a large building you know they've reached their cultural apex. Nowhere to go but down.

See Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'", Guns'n'Roses' "Don't Cry" and...Puff Daddy's "Come With Me."

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, reading that sentence the first thing I thought of was "Don't Cry". But what about "Where the Streets Have No Name"?

Also, does Evanescense pereforming at a very high floor of a large building in "Bring Me to Life" mean that they're about to reach their cultural apex?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a man whose talent level is so fucking embarrassing that the opportunity for artists such as Sting and Usher to used as props... was never subverted.

Shakey Mo Collier OTFM.

At first I though Puffy had his hand on Andre 3000's ass in that picture. That was much funnier.
