I've only heard Baby's Coming Back, but that's probably my single of the year. I think I'll buy this now.

Love the Jarvis, love the Morrissey, undecided on the Thurston Moore, not so keen on the Little Steven (quelle surprise). An altogether more sympatico project than some of the other recent Hip Makeovers (Marianne & Loretta, I mean you). More synergy, I guess. The songs fit the singer, and the singer "gets" the songs.

but *what* songs they are. this album has really exceeded my expectations.

splooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What songs are they? And what's the production like?

I'll 'fess up. Bought it the same day that I bought SMiLE. The smartass rekka stow clerk asked me if I was into geriatric rock. I saw her do an in-store at Amoeba L.A. – what, almost two years ago? She was, uh, vocally challenged. Saw her later in NYC at the Bottom Line (no, I am not stalking her!) and she sounded like a million bucks. That said, I hear pitch controlling all over the thing.

It occurred to me today that a duet album between Nancy Sinatra and Marc Ribot could possibly be the best thing ever.

I actually like the Little Steven song! It's funny because I just know Joey Ramone would have shown up on this record if he were still alive, so I guess this was its replacement or something.

i'm quite looking forward to getting this.

i've been listening to the lightning's girl compilation a lot lately.

theres one song on this that is well like pj harvey.

its a good album, i like the production and the sound of her voice, but theres some real duffers thrown in too.

the pj harvey song is the sonic youth song actually - brilliant! even though it sounds just like SY.

The PJ Harvey songs on the Marianne Faithfull album would have been better sung by PJ Harvey. With no discernable attempt on PJ's part to mould the songs to Marianne's character or style, they just sound like PJ backing tracks fronted by the wrong singer. Which is why Nancy Sinatra's album scores more highly.

(Of course, the glaring hole in this logic is "Let Me Kiss You" - but even here, NS doesn't sound like the wrong singer; instead, the Sinatra/Morrissey combination comes across as really rather sweet.)
