Your house is on fire, and you can only grab one box of CDs/records from your alpabetically organized collection. You can save only one sequence of three letters between A and Z. OMG, WTF are you gon

Well, honestly - who actually files their collection chronologically?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Me first?

OK. I'll go for B-D.
B: Bauhaus, Adrian Belew, Big Youth,Black Uhuru, Blur, Buzzcocks
C: Can, Captain Beefheart, Nick Cave, James Chance, Chumbawamba, Clash, Colourbox, Cure, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane
D: Damned, Miles Davis, Delta 5, dEUS, DJ Shadow, Bob Dylan.

It would be a tough call between that and R-T ‘though (Ramones, REM, Residents, Roxy Music, Ruts, Silver Apples, Siouxsie & Banshees, Slits, Small Faces, Smiths, Sonic Youth, Southern Death Cult, Stooges, Suicide, Sun Ra, Supergrass, Talking Heads, Television, Theatre Of Hate, Errol Thompson, Tones On Tail)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have any Q (I don't think so), so I'd grab P, R and S.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

anything with S.

a world without Sparks just isn't worth it.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That's cheating Edward!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i would thank god that it is gone and restart my life as a happy obsession-free human being.

doomie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuckin' buddhist.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Pfff... let it all burn. I could get it all again if I wanted to (unlikely) I'd be more bothered about my instruments.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hey norman,

if i could get an interview with phil from human league would you be for doing it?

doomie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK yes. He still lives in Sheffield, right?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(PS sorry abt the continued non-appearance of the KW piece. I've done 0 creative stuff this summer/autumn b/c of work)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

that's cool!

am going to be working on it tomorrow. i think it should be cool. if i get it sorted we have to get the interview done and sorted quick-like before they change their minds.

doomie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

yr original piece on the human league was linked up to their site. so i think that might by my 'in' - y'know??

doomie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict that Danger Whore nicks the S section.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict that Dr. C will question the wisdom of organising your collection in alphabetical order.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What Norman said. I would be more concerned about getting my Laura memorabilia out of there; all her writing, all the letters, cards, photos, etc. - because if these went they could never be replaced.

(and yes my collection is alphabetically organised for professional reasons)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

are you a professional alphabetical organiser, marcello? if so, can you come and sort my collection out?

d0omie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but as a critic and writer if i need to reference something quickly for a review or an article i need to be able to know where everything is on my shelves.

when i was with laura she made me de-alphabetise my collection as she thought it showed saddo tendencies.

i quite liked the subtle chaos and poignancy of the latter arrangement, coming across records you'd forgotten about and rediscovering them.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish you were a professional alphabetical organiser. that would rule. i have no time to organise my collection.

D0OMIE X, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

see doomie that's my problem. i've got way too much time.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i work in the spare room. the bed by the end of the week, you can't even see it. just books, magazine clippings, headphones, catalogues, records purchased at charity shops still in bags, envelopes, burnt cds, things not opened, things i'm listening to... and on the other side is a ridiculous amount of cds in shelves agaisnt the wall. eventually i pick up all the cds and shove them on the shelves. loose cds get all piled up there as well.l records, i'm all careful and alphabetically with my records...dunno why.

doomie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

if it went up in flames i would probably be happy.

doomie x, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think that putting yer records in alphabetical order was saddo as well, but when you've got a lot of them, it's just practical. boring, yes, but when you really want to hear, say, das hoheleid salomos, and it takes you as long as the fucking record lasts just to find the thing, you know?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have to go B-D.

I, J, K

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No surprise that K's in there Alex - but why I and J rather than L and M?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

DEF
Dylan
Earth
The Fall

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

he obviously prefers INXS and Jamiroquai to Lydia Lunch and Motorhead.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

C, R, S

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate to break this to you, but C doesn't actually come before S....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

d'oh! S s/be R obv.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

D to G at least gives me Depeche Mode, Genesis and Peter Gabriel. But I'd regret not to save C as well, to secure Crowded House and Elvis Costello from burning.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, ILM, behave yourself with regard to the burning of Elvis Costello...

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess N-P because that hits three of my five favorite bands, but I also might go for B-D just for the sheer # of bands whose names start with those letters.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Does V get you Various Artists, cuz if so then S through V it is.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid D to G is actually four letters.

So someone has to burn.

Who's it going to be, Geir: Depeche Mode or Genesis?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if V did include Various Artists (which, just for future reference, I've just decided it doesn't - it's an extra letter after X), S to V is four letters, even "U" does only include Ultravox and UB40.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Now, ILM, behave yourself with regard to the burning of Elvis Costello..."

Couldn't we just sort of accidentally singe off everything after King Of America?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh woops I didn't see that it was three, not four. Well I guess it's T-V then. Either way I would grab comps befor I grabbed albums however you want to place them.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)

Give Blood And Chocolate the benefit of the doubt, but yeah you could cheerfully incinerate everything thereafter.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Either way I would grab comps befor I grabbed albums however you want to place them."

Then you can have Y (Yachts, Yabby You, Neil Young, Young Marble Giants, Yello, Yellow Magic Orchestra) and Z (Frank Zappa, Zones) but that's all.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha wait can't I do an end around and go back to A and B?!!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No. You'd have to take "Other" (which afaik consists only of !!!) and A.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha well A is better than Y and Z.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this Stewart, no ? and the Mysterians?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My bad Marcello: ? and the Mysterians naturally belong with !!!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd burn. I wouldn't want to, but thats what would happen. I'd try and pick things out, then stumble out of the room with an overflowing crate of LPs and CDs, trying to pick up the ones I'm dropping as I go and die of smoke inhalation on the stairs. CDs and LPs would spill everywhere in dramatic fashion.

They'd film it all for a PSA, of course, warning kids not to get hooked on tunes.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Thursday, 14 October 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

R-T

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 October 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Two of Elvis Costello's best ever albums were released after "The King Of America"

Still have to burn him though, as I cannot sacrifice Genesis and Peter Gabriel. Oh, well at least his albums are still in print ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 14 October 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the reason why they invented CD binders.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 14 October 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd also be trying to realphabetize Caetano Veloso and Curtis Mayfield under C, Bob Marley under B, and slip Gram Parsons under Byrds.

billy, Friday, 15 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, B & C for sure, but choosing between A & D? Hmmm...Albert Ayler, Abba and AC/DC vs. Miles Davis, Bob Dylan and Deep Purple?

(thinks)

B, C, D it is.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

...but as I pointed out once before, I've got a wondrous supply of wide-ranging wonderful tuneage compressed into that tiny section of ST through SU. (And can always use more!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've spent a long time thinking about this (what if it happens?!) and I've decided on C, D and E, meaning I get Can, The Cure, Chemical Brothers, Cocteau Twins, The Clash, Coltrane, Cornelius, The Congos, Daft Punk, D'Angelo, Miles Davis, De La Soul, Delgados, Disco Inferno, Dismemberment Plan, Dizzee, DJ Shadow, Doves, Nick Drake, EST, Todd Edwards, Elbow Missy Elliott, Embrace, Eminem, Eno and Bill Evans.

Of course it means I have to give in to orthodoxy and move Missy to E (she's currently under M for Missy, of course) (I am actually planning to move her now in case this happens omgwtf), but there you go. No cheating other than that.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

No Stone Roses? No Talk Talk? No Bark Psychosis?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think RST: Rachel's, Radiohead, Steve Reich, Sea and Cake, Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith, Sonic Youth, Steely Dan, Stereolab, Tortoise, Talk Talk.
