Ghost Dog Soundtrack - Instrumentals

I'm told that there's an import version of the Ghost Dog soundtrack with all the original RZA music instead of the crap ass raps on the US release. Anyone know where I can get this on CD?

Damn. $30. Is it worth it?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

$30. what to sell, what to sell...

kephm (kephm), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Honestly I didn't think it was worth $30. It's pretty great, but $30? I dunno, depends how big of a head you are I guess. Some of the themes repeat themselves in different tracks, IIRC, so it kinda feels shorter than it really is. Or something like that. It might be cheaper elsewhere though!

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not worth thirty dollars. And the American version is great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It is an insane price for such a short CD (it’s about thirty minutes if you program out the wack-ass vocal, ‘Wu-World Order’), but I’m happy I’ve bought it. There’s some insanely good stuff on there, my favourites are ‘Opening Theme’, ‘Flying Birds’ and ‘RZA #7’. ‘Flying Birds’ is actually one of my favourite beats in general, it’s really a very beautiful mini song. So... I suggest listening, at least.

Orange, Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded it all, and it's one of my favourite albums - I love the edition that came out everywhere but Japan, I think, and have that too, but the one without the vocals was what I really wanted after seeing the movie.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

WHY DO JAPAN GET ALL THE KEWL STUFF

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM Martin about the 'score' aspect of it. I thought the regular release was ruined by trying to make songs out of everything.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

But those songs are great! "Cakes" and "Don't Test/Wu Stallion" are fantastic!

SLSK

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really good for a score - great background music. Whether it's better or worse than the soundtrack is hard to tell. Two completely different styles of albums.

I've got it on slsk btw. antthatcant

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

A couple of good tracks on the soundtrack but the rest is garbage.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Great - xmas present 4 husband is now fixed. Thanks for this thread.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 14 October 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
hey, is it possible that "Flying Birds" samples Madonna's "Waiting"?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The melody sample in ‘Flying Birds’ sounds like a short bit of soul music played at half speed. But I don’t know that Madonna song, I’m curious.

Orange (Orange), Friday, 24 December 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the beat, I mean

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 December 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
And [Jarmusch] knew the shits. Like he didn't just say shit. Cause, like, some people are like "Blah blah blah blah," but he said shit, and he knew shit. So I was like "Damn, this nigga knows some shit." So I knew we could relate.

The RZA, re: Ghost Dog, in SPIN

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what he is talking about.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Then he gave me some of his earlier films, and one of thoe ones that really stuck in my head was Dead Man. And it stuck in the heads of not just myslef but of a lot of the guys that hang with me - we watched 'em in the van, and we smoked weed and watched the shit. And we'd be like, "Yo, that shit's phat," you know?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

he was slightly more articulate w/Terry Gross last week... *sigh*

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 18 March 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I think I know exactly what RZA is saying here. You guys just need to watch more Jarmusch.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 18 March 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

RZA is making perfect sense. I'm with Mike.

BTW, much as I like the songs on the soundtrack, I'd much prefer the score. Flying Birds is IT. Capital I. Capital T. I even tried listening to the isolated soundtrack on the DVD...but there's too much silence between the songs, very disorienting. I want that import. Maybe $30 isn't too much.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 March 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

Whats hard to understand about "Me and my friends smoked up and watched Dead Man and we liked it"?

Anyway I agree w/ alex, if you don't get the American version you don't get to hear RZA pronounce "swords" with like three "w"s, a la "SWWWords"

deej., Friday, 18 March 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

The second quote is obv more articulate than (and illuminates some of the mystery of) the first.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

'Mr Jarmusch expressed an interest in music I myself enjoy, so we found some common ground and were able to collaborate effectively.'

Or is it the opposite?

I think Neil Young said something similar.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

"Jarmusch knew what he was talking about."

deej., Friday, 18 March 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Talking about what?!?!?! Bowel movements?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 March 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to assume there was some context in the original interview.

deej., Friday, 18 March 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly the excerpt as posted is a bit cryptic.

deej., Friday, 18 March 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

man, i actually saw this film, but i remember at best like four seconds of it.

there was some interview where rza said he apparently called up jarmusch in the middle of the night, picked him up in his van, and drove around the city playing him the music he had written for the film (before he'd even seen any part of the film!).

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 18 March 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

same interview. I totally picked less than flattering shit there but only cuz I find the shit to be some really amusing shit, you know?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna make an egotistic statement, that this is a fat-ass soundtrack. It's very artistic, you know what I mean? We kinda had a lot of similar ideas and shit, and kinda went through a lot of things - encountered a lot of interesting teachings, I would say. We had a chance to talk about stuff. His hair's not white for no reason and shit. Jim is a deep guy and shit. So I was impressed with that. But, egotistically, this soundtrack is hot. It's phate. This shit is dope. I mean, if you put it in, you will rock - without pressing a button. The only time you gotta press the buttom is when it ends.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Usually interviewers tend to clean that shit up and shit. Wonder why this one didn't. I should have kept the whole shit but I just ripped out this shit.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

phate is a typo, not wu-speak

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

phate? I was about to say haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

If phate was wu-speak would it be pronounced like fate or fa-TEY?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I would think the former, but with these guys you can never tell.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like one of those sun ra style puns, "ra sun ray re" etc.

deej., Friday, 18 March 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

well, if RZA being that 'street' (or, whatever) upsets you, which it seems to, check the new wu-manual book he wrote. It's a little more 'clean'. He talks about the bible, chess, wu-history, threads, etc. but that shit is some hot shit.

b, Friday, 18 March 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah I'm borrowing a copy from a friend soon
