CMJ Nicolai Dunger/Sufjan Stevens Friday, NYC-- Should I Go?

How are Dunger and Stevens live? What kind of show does Stevens do? I like the Michigan disc but mostly because of the arrangements (lyrics are a little annoying). Kingsbury Manx is also playing who I think are pretty good. Never heard of the other acts:

HALF-HANDED CLOUD 7:30 pm
CASTANETS, The 8:30 pm
KINGSBURY MANX 9:30 pm
LIZ JANES 10:30 pm
NICOLAI DUNGER 11:30 pm
SUFJAN STEVENS 12:30 am

I think the tix are only $15, which seems reasonable.

Go see The Fall, Bunnybrains, The Intelligence, Parts & Labor and Coachwhips instead.

Wrong answer.

I do not like Sufjan Stevens. I would say, "No, do not go."

Obviously if you don't like Sufjan Stevens you would say don't go. I don't like The Fall either. I want to know, from someone who doesn't dislike him, if he does a good live show.

Dunger kind of sucked when I saw him open for Calexico in SF, but I hear that his live show has improved immensely over the past year or so.

Jaymc, which band are you in?

Not sure if I can make it but I'll at least check you out online.

Do you find that playing the CMJ thing automatically does anything special for the band or is it just another show?

i endorse seeing sufjan live. the performance always seems kind of fragile and about to fall apart at any time, but i've seen him & the band put on a pretty amazing show at least a half a dozen times. the key to the show being good is if the backup band has practiced much. if it's at the beginning of a tour, it's a ramshackle mess, but at the end of a tour, it's a pretty rad show... and usually a nyc show is pretty decent, cause he and his peeps live there....

Sufjan's show that I saw was VERY "fragile" and very touching. If it's a small venue, I'd say definitely go.

Unfortunately I got stuck having drinks with my lady's friends and we suddenly realized it was too late to go. Another wasted Friday.

Saw Sufjan really up close in a tiny club earlier this year, supporting Iron & Wine. A hushed indie folk reverie. Absolutely wonderful, sublime. Just picking on his banjo and guitar. His banjo is really sweet toned, not at all plunky, and his voice is wonderful. Go go go!

So, did anyone make it to the show? How was it. Bummed that I didn't go.

I was actually there for Castanets and Kingsbury Manx earlier in the night, but then I went off to the DFA party. My bandmate Elizabeth stuck around, though, and she reports it was very, very good.

Jay, how was your show? Which band do you play with?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nevermind, I saw on another thread.
