I'm surprised Minimal Compact doesn't have its own thread. Anyway, with the band reuniting and their old classics getting the re-issue treatment, I think it's time for me to finally check them out. So where do I start? I'm familiar with a couple of their songs, 'Statik Dancing', 'Next One is Real' but tend to find them a bit too jerky..

Statik Dancing is absolutely wonderful. God I love that song - fantastic jerky guitar and hilarious deadpan low-countries vocals. I only know half a dozen other songs, all v.good, but not as grebt as Statik Dancing.

There's a 3CD box-set out now apparently - a friend of mine has it and swears that it is fantastic.

Oooh ... Deadly Weapons

Try their final albums Lowlands Flight...it was recorded as a sort of soundtrack if I remember right, and the jerkiness is removed from it entirely. I really don't know what to compare it to, but it's a very beautiful record, one of my top ten.

Sounds good. Is it instrumental then?
I quite like 'When I go', from the Wings of Desire soundtrack FWIW.

Lowlands Flight is mostly instrumental - i seem to recall a vocal track or two. part of the great Made to Measure series and, yes, most highly recommended.

dug out The Figure One Cuts last night, and it annoyed me to no end. i'm sure it was just a mood thing.

Trisomie 21 instrumentals; the guitar-and-chamber-ensemble arrangements of Colin Newman's solo albums (no surprise there); the Swell Maps' prettier moments (like "Big Empty Field (No. 2)"); Tuxedomoon's The Ghost Sonata; early Dif Juz.

Are they at all similar to Immersion?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

not remotely. Immersion = loopnodelic guitartronica. MP = Continental death-disco pseudofunk.

The Ghost Sonata is one of my favorite records so I'll def. check this out then

I know it's not particularly like Immersion, but I always hear similarities between Immersion/ Minimal Compact/Newman's solo stuff/Githead

ten months pass...
gosh.

the morpheus (as in samy from Minimal Compact) + joakim track 'give us something' is just wonderful...

someone kindly sorted out a cd-r of MC remixes (optimo/maurice fulton/international observer (aka tom bailey/thomson twins!))

alongside a comp of gruesome twosome stuff

- if this is anywhere near as good as hallucination generation track then this is going to kill the current playlist.

I remember the Gruesome Twosome being kinda crap, but I heard that 10 years ago... "Hallucination generation" will always be classik though, especially as it soundtracked my teenage goth-clubbing years...

lets just say that the Thrash remix of 'i'm the light' is 'of its time'. very bouncy like william orbit/bassomatic, but so far nothing is going to surpass the Hallucination Generation track ..

three years pass...

Still haven't checked out 'Lowlands Flight'. Is it even in print?
