Just heard this for the first time last night. Exactly how many notes away is it from being ABBA's "Fernando"? Did anyone from ABBA ever bring up the look-and-feel issue?

I really need to get a good Boney M comp.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely.

Make sure it features "Never change lovers in the middle of the night" and "He was a Steppenwolf".

Keith Watson (kmw), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It isn't technically or juridically a ripoff. It has the same arrangement, more or less, but the melody is different.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it more of a ripoff than Brotherhood of Man's "Angelo"?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 16 October 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

When I'm trying to explain why I don't really get into Boney M I've heard (aside from the history-disco - "Ma Baker" & "Rasputin" and "Night Train To Venus") I usually note that I haven't gotten into ABBA either.

(can I just applaud Geir for his continued heroic attempts to introduce "juridically" into the ILM lexicon? k thanx bye)

I really need to get a good Boney M comp.

I think the U.S. Greatest Hits disc is pretty complete/great.

if boney m had an abba influence (which i don't hear so much -- to me it all sounds like europeans trying to come to terms with anglo-american pop culture in the most european way possible), the subsequent boney m ripoff group was dschinghis khan ("moskau" is their "rasputin").

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 16 October 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I got to ask Mark S to explain to me why people like non-"Rasputin" Boney M so much last Christmas!

re the issue of shameless ripoffs in eurodisco -- it happened ALL THE TIME. in america the mainstreaming of disco was very self-conscious, but from what i can tell, over in europe anything with a hook was fair game, so if you listen to cerrone records you'll hear the entire spectrum of late '70s pop/rock being pilfered wholesale. today if a dance artist took poetic license with a tom petty song it would be a big deal, but cerrone wasn't a "dance artist," he was (thankfully) just another weirdo in the great pop continuum.

Ned, much joy is on your way if youare getting a Boney M best of i'm always amazed at how lil penetration they made of the US market.

slightl ot, i just heard a cover of Cerrone's Supernature - possibly the first music video i ever saw. mad scientist, sexy lab assistants and transformation of lab into lush jungle.

head expanding, incomprehensible entertainment, especially the 'daddy cool' and 'rasputin' clips:
