I have never seen anybody compare these, although obviously there are lots of similarities between the two teenybopper girls of the 00s and the two teenybopper girls of the late 80s.

As for taking sides: Debbie Gibson, clearly. She wrote her own songs, and some of them were even quite good. I mean, "Foolish Beat" is indeed a nice song.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 16 October 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The teenyboppers of the 80's weren't in the public eye as long as the 00's. So they win perhaps, I dunno. And don't care, really.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 16 October 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney Spears' crank habit has supplied an amazing number of funny photos, so she wins.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 17 October 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Xtina is the only one who can actually sing.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Sunday, 17 October 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

debbie gibson can sing better than christina

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Sunday, 17 October 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Debbie Gibson did have great songs. "We Could Be Together" and "Over The Wall" are beyond reproach as far as late-80s teen pop goes. She shat all over Tiffany, anyway.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 17 October 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i heart tiffany

she is my favorite

todd swiss (eliti), Sunday, 17 October 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, are we talking about solo careers here as well? Because if we were, that would change everything.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Debbie Gibson ended up doing a pathetic bus and truck tour of the musical version of "Cinderella" where she was upstaged nightly by a geriatric Eartha Kitt who played the fairy godmother.

Britney will end up doing a pathetic bus and truck tour of the musical version of "Born Innocent" where she will be upstaged nightly by a geriatric Madonna who will play the prison matron.

Tiffany was never heard from again.

Xtina will marry a Bush grandson and become first lady.

I predict.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Tiffany bared all for Playboy. So she could win but...

Britney. Because Britney is soooo hot she makes every new video by her addictive viewing and she has the horniest body ever to surface in pop music.

She also has the best songs. "Oops I did it Again" is GENIUS.

Mad Mike, Sunday, 17 October 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Tiffany was never heard from again.

Tiffany's on a comeback tour RIGHT NOW! She was in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago. (I realise this doesn't mean that she will ever trouble the chart compilers again, but bless her, she's trying).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 October 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Xtina will marry a Bush grandson and become first lady.

Reminding you that Britney is the one who supports Bush ;)

I'll give Britney "Oops I Did It Again" (although that is more like the artistic highlight of Max Martin's career than Britney's)

Anyway, "Foolish Beat" is clearly better.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Xtina is the only one who can actually sing.

True, this woman has the actual pipes for the job, but she weilds the gift in such a hoary, needlessly melismatic manner that its inarguable prowess is rendered moot.

Debbie Gibson is a huge Redd Kross fan and sang a Soft Boys track with the Circle Jerks, so obvioulsy she wins in my book.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Debbie Gibson is the only one who can actually write songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 October 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You said that. They clearly aren't about the songwriting though, or you could have added Cathy Dennis in there too (she's all about the songwriting, but so much not about teenage boy wank material).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

All music is about songwriting

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 October 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If we're taking sides based on raw musical talent, then sure, it's Debbie Gibson. Is this what you had in mind, Geir? OTOH, if we're taking sides based on who is the biggest star, who had the biggest impact on music, and who had the best and most memorable singles, then it's Britney in a landslide. One may not respect her talent but there's no denying her star power.

It's kind of like Tom Cruise with acting: very little acting talent, plays the same part (more or less) in 75% of his movies, but he's a huge star and his movies are usually pretty good.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom Cruise proved his acting ability in "Born on the 4th of July" and to a lesser extent "Magnolia". He just rarely chooses to showcase it, opting for blockbuster roles instead.

Mad Mike..., Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree re: Magnolia. He played his usual cocky smartalec character but turned up the volume a few notches. And had longer hair. I haven't seen "Bot4oJ", though. And he's had other oppurtunities to play more varied roles, such as "Eyes Wide Shut" (good movie, although he was nothing special).

Anyhow, that's not the point ... nobody would confuse him with a Shakespearean thespian, and yet he's one of the biggest stars ever. His talents may be limited, but he's very good at performing certain types of roles, works with great people, and makes extremely enjoyable movies. Hence the comparison to Britney/music.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

you could have added Cathy Dennis

I can't possibly have been the only teenage boy with a crush on Cathy Dennis.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: Tom Cruise. I do notice that ever though he doesn't always shy from playing unlikeable, asshole men, he never takes the risk of playing a physically 'ugly' character - like someone like Brad Pitt has done on occaision. His physical presence (with the exception of Interview with the Vampire) is so consistent that he's really just a spotlit character actor.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And despite the unique career turn he took for "Interview", he wasn't ugly in that either. Although it's strange you mention that because I think that's the best acting performance of his career.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's probably the only time he's ever surprised anyone.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

he never takes the risk of playing a physically 'ugly' character
Vanilla Sky?

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

well ok, but that still kind of fits his mould. The ugliness was because of an accident that happened to the character and thus he played the ugly person as a betrayal of his real self - he was still the attractive person, trapped, which is different somehow.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Same deal, with the Fourth of July now that you make me think of it. He's still THAT GUY, just trapped by circumstance.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

'Electric Youth' vs 'Toxic', motherfuckers. Either way, Brit and Debbie mack all over the other 2. And Cathy Dennis was hot.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Electric Youth was terrible, and as irredeemable as all of Debbie's songs (that I have heard) Toxic is far better. However, this comparison is hardly fair - maybe if Debbie had a mecha-suit like Sigourney's in which to do battle with Alien Britney, you might have a real fight.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've played out 'Electric Youth' and gladly, too.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact, Tiff the Teenage Mall Hooker is the only one I've never played out.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

If we're taking sides based on raw musical talent, then sure, it's Debbie Gibson. Is this what you had in mind, Geir?

That is always what I have in mind. Nothing but raw musical talent should count in any kind of music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, then why start the thread? We already know that Britney is no prodigy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Just a pitch for Tiffany (not necessarily the best, but getting clobbered on this thread):

Her "Could've Been" is the best ballad by any of these singers. In fact, I think she's a far better singer than any of the others; not the strongest voice, but the one who did the most with it, given her material. Problem is the material, the arrangements, etc., which were not up to what Martin did for Britney or Kifner (right?) did for Christina in her one great moment.

Debbie's songwriting talent seemed to desert her after "Only In My Dreams," "Shake Your Love," and "Perfect Beat" (which is the second best ballad by this gang). And even on those three, she had a tendency towards the blase.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Could've Been" was a great song, but everything else she did was awful. And "Could've Been" wasn't her composition either.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth fragrance vs. Britney Spears' Curious fragrance

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Best ballad by any of the above is actually Britney's "When I Found You", though, unless you count "Born To Make You Happy" as a ballad, in which case it obliterates everything in its path.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Spears: simply because she had the best molders/handlers. Gibson and Aquilera both had something (one wrote own material, the other had pipes) but neither showed the willingness to be whatever their manager wanted them to be. It was just as well that Spears had some good producers and vid directors on her side.

Viz (Viz), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I say: Pink!

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Debbie Gibson ended up doing a pathetic bus and truck tour of the musical version of "Cinderella" where she was upstaged nightly by a geriatric Eartha Kitt who played the fairy godmother.
Britney will end up doing a pathetic busload .yes.
Tiffany was never heard from again.who ?

Xtina will marry a Bush grandson and become first lady.
she will never be a lady

I predict.

britney is the hottest, tiffany had a great song called radio romance
xtina is skanky
debbie wrote her own and is the best singer.pb rocks.

gebbie dibson, Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

We already know that Britney is no prodigy.

She certainly had loadsa music types swooning over her abilities in her pre-teen days - hell, she really was a better singer back then!

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Xtina will marry a Bush grandson and become first lady.

Why her? After all, Britney is the one of the two who sympathizes
with Bush politically.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Britney actually did have a great voice before she went throught puberty.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

"Out of the Blue" is one of the best songs about falling in love EVAH. The little synth-guitar sparkles that punctuate each verse are like cupid's arrows or something.

***Iam a DEBBIE GIBSON FAN***

There are a lot of consequences that ever had happen to generations if we ever compared to the 80'S well there are different things to considerate Basically lets first rank there classification

1) Debbie Gibson - Songwriter, singer, actress & a playboy poser but her dances are just hoping production too low compared to the latest.
2) Christina Aguilera - Co- songwriter, singer, not an actress did not do playboy pose but made nudity sexy open pose in different magazines.
3) Tiffany - Co- sonwriter, singer, playboy poser, but very poor quality regarding on styles on the 80's video not too good.
4) Britney Spears - not totally a writer, a singer but poor quality in voice, actress, does lip synch on concerts, but dances well, poses too much acting a nudity things in every magazine not classy, but in fact he is a following teenager footsteps to be MADONNA someday.

Belinda Carlisle, esp the Belinda of "Leave a Light On" and "Mad About You."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

i can't fucking stand debbie gibson. i vote for tiffany and tie between cristina/britney. also, tiffany's career may have been cut short by her issues with her parents.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Frank's right upthread about Tiffany's vocal chops. She had the tunes too: "I Think We're Alone Now" bests Tommy James.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Make that:

TS: Teenyboppers who later posed for Playboy vs. ones who haven't *yet*

And Belinda Carlisle falls into the first category.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

"baby, one more time" >> "shake your love" > "genie in a bottle" > "i think we're alone now"

BUT

"could've been" > "beautiful" > "foolish beat" > pick yr brit ballad

John Fredland (jfredland), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

I bought Electric Youth a couple of years ago for twelve cents (cassettes were twenty-five cents each, but they were half off that day) and didn't think it was very good.

Syfy has cast 1980s pop-star rivals Debbie Gibson and Tiffany in one of the network's signature Saturday night original movies.

The network promises an epic battle between the former teen pop stars, who will co-star in "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid."

Gibson will play a fanatical animal-rights activist who frees illegally imported exotic snakes from pet stores, sending them into the Everglades, where they grow to mega sizes. Tiffany will play an overzealous park ranger who uses dangerous methods to save endangered alligators.
