Who has heard this? The reviews I've seen have been pretty positive. I figure it's worth starting a thread about because I know that at least chuck and h. like Rachid Taha, and I could imagine some of the rest of you finding this one interesting, at least going by what little I know about it.

Heard the cover of "Rock the Casbah", which was alright, but after 'Medina', I'm a bit skeptical

I bought MADE IN MEDINA because Nigel Williamson wrote that it was way past Page and Plant's attempted Rock X North Africa. He's so right! And to think that Steve Hillage of Gong is the Page figure, and they've got Galactic, the New Orleans jam band, in there too. It's one of those rare more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts payoffs, like the MERMAID AVENUE sessions. I dig that Rachid (who likes to call himelf "Rai Cooder") doesn't try to sound like Plant in the literal sense. I gotta hear this too.

The Taha live album is great, too. Very underrated.

(And yes I remember that I said I didn't especially like what little I'd heard by him, but I would consider checking out something. I think if this is his most rock-oriented album, it could also be his best, since that seems to be the music he is most drawn to.)

Checking out this board, stumbled across this. Tekitoi? is going away the best record I have heard this year. Taha(/Steve Hilliage) is a really unique artist, part Franco-Algerian Joe Strummer, part roots-rocker for a non-rock tradition, part political dance artist. This is indeed his rockiest record, and also by far the most introspective: a lot of 9/11 hangover. The production is great, although maybe a bit bombastic -- sometimes Massive Attack with lush strings. Anyway, I love it, and him, a lot. If you know his work, this is a lot closer to "Live" than to Medina, Diwan, or 1,2,3 soleils.

I just have "Diwan" and worry about him being too bombastic when he rocks, but I like him enough to still be curious about this one.

three years pass...

Oh, man. I CANNOT stop listening to "Diwan2" these past few days.

I just said this on another ILM thread, but its more relevant here: Rani, from Diwan 2, is awesome. So raw and firey.
