Starfish Pool -- C/D, etc.

I landed a vinyl copy of "Interference '96" yesterday, so I'm celebrating by starting a Starfish Pool thread. No love for Koen Lybaert in the archives -- only two mentions, and they're both by me.

"Interference '96" is the stone cold classic of the bunch, and many people would be satisfied just owning that. After that, I'd suggest getting the remix album (worth it for the mind-blowing Unit Moebius remixes alone), or the Minion (= SP + UM) album. Both are extremely stripped down and minimal, so they may not be for everyone.

"Dante's Carnival" is the only album of his that I didn't like, although it's been years since I've heard it and it's probably due for a reappraisal.

CLASSIC in boldfaced caps (except I don't know how to boldface type here). His canon's full of maximal techno of titanic power. A totally underrated producer.

Yeah, I expect that everyone here who knows about his music is a fan, so he's CLASSIC by default. Hence the "etc." = "communicate your love on this thread".

Let me try and help you out, Dave:

CLASSIC

Arrgh, why won't it accept my font sizing?
I'll take this oppurtunity to say that I could gladly listen to "Offday" on a continuous loop for hours. Sure, there's a 21-minute version of it already, but it's still NOT LONG ENOUGH. I am not bored at the end of the 21 minutes and could gladly hear more. This puts it in a category (among beat-driven techno) with Plastikman's "Alpha Wave" remix, some Vainqueur tracks, and very little else.

You are so OTM, MIR.

So I guess we're the only people on ILM who give a damn about Starfish Pool. It's a bit sad.

I've reviewed one of his albums.

Here's Ned's review of "The Golden Cycle" ... a record I hadn't heard of before!

Starfish Pool with vocals -- interesting!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 October 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

while i enjoy the softer textures Lybaert has been exploring via U-Cover, the Golden Cycle series, and his partnership with Llips, this guy is such a master of full-torque monolithic triphammer techno, one only hopes he'll come back around to it someday. i wanted to add to the testimonials, and have been sculpting my post over the past few days. then i found this - everything you want to know about Starfish Pool. and more. in the man's own words, even. so i'll just say Starfish Pool = giga-Classic and post the

finally found a copy of Chill Out 'n Confused. very different; go-nowhere (but pleasantly so) ambient noodling with bells, field recordings, and guitars. no "Offday" here, nosir. ergo, interesting but unessential. soak up Interference '96, Rituals for the Dying, Sweetwater, Lowground (Lybaert & Mark Broom), and those devastating RA-X and Unit Moebius remixes, and you'll have heard Lybaert at the peak of his colossal powers.

Great interview!
The silverrec site is no more, I guess that means the 2004 Starfish Pool album he talked about won't be happening ... has he released anything at all in the past three years?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the Illusions of Move collection is the last proper Pool release of which i'm aware. but Lybaert's U-Cover label and its subsidiaries have gained momentum. i hope he hasn't lost interest in production and focused all energies on curation and distribution. that would be unfortunate.
