"Electric Avenue"

I just heard a remix of this song. I kinda liked the original when I was 13. And there's a thread about a-ha, so why not one about Eddie Grant?

OY!

Here's where the UK bunch can help -- over here in the States, all we knew was this song and maybe the _Romancing the Stone_ title song. So was he huge over there or something?

I think that song is effin' great. I'd love to hear a remix. I just recently brought that song up, by the way, as a bunch of us were reminiscing about "pass the duche(?) 'pon the left hand side" and stuff like that. My almost-father-in-law knew his name (he's a musical Jeopardy) and now I've forgotten. I would very much like to hear a whole album of Mr. Electric Avenue's. It's gotta be br-oi-oi-ng.

I loved a couple of his singles, e.g. 'Living on the Frontline'. His clunking drum programmes and would-be axe-man guitar solos got a bit much after a while. Electric Avenue, was THE Eddy Grant number, of course. Unless you count Baby Come Back...

there's a big kfc on the corner

Sorry folks, but "I Don't Wanna Dance" was the Really Big Hit - a favourite with middle-aged Mum and Dads (who found "Come On Eileen" a bit too difficult) at wedding receptions the land over.

oh dear, Eddie Grant has always been hopeless. The Equals were a poor pop reggae band (who didn't seem to get the reggae bit), and every since just got worse. he should be classed with UB40, and best forgotten. and the Electric Avenue remix, which he had nothing to do with, obviously, was dire.

there were some reasonable records (not his!) put out on his Ice label in the 70s though.

michael, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael, The Equals were never pop-reggae. 'Unequalled Equals' (1967) is a top set of Northern soul/r'n'b tracks. The sleeve is notable, too, for featuring a portrait shot of surely the ugliest band ever.

Daniel, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Equals were great bubblegum-soul, with no pretentions to reggae authenticity whatsoever. "Baby Come Back", "I Can See But You Don't Know", "Police On My Back" & "Green Light" are all killer. They got dodgier as the years went by - some lite glam moments that didn't suit them - but they had their moments.

"Electric Avenue" I believe only has one chord the entire song, a C#.

Also, to clarify (boy do I know a bunch of stupid stuff):

Eddy Grant's "Romancing The Stone" was supposed to be on the soundtrack of the movie of the same name but didn't pass the producer's and music director's fancies, so it was not featured in the movie or on the soundtrack. Eddy ended up releasing the song as a single anyway.

It's in A, actually, if I'm remembering the song correctly...

A sounds right to me.

Hey, Pinefox, d'you have perfect pitch?

It's funny how Eddy Grant seems to mean different things to different people. I will always associate him with 'Living On The Frontline' and 'Killer On The Rampage', but what about:

Gimme Hope Jo'Anna? Love that one.

one year passes...
THREAD REVIVE!

this is awful to confess, but I think this song is when a very young James Blount realized not everyone in Europe was white.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 April 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

this song is great - those "BOY!"s just pierced the radio that summer

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 April 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

How many times has this been remixed? I've heard tons of bootlegs, and the Ringbang remix was officially released, right? Also, didn't Wyclef cover the tune somewhere along the lines?

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 6 April 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe John Forte did, though it's definitely in the zone of 'songs Wyclef et al. would cover/reference heavily etc. 97-99'

"I Don't Wanna Dance" rules!

very tempted to dig out The Carnival

My dad was one of the Customs and Excise officers who nicked Eddie Grant for tax evasion back in the '80s. In a way, my family is kind of responsible for him releasing that god-awful remix that shocked the UK a couple of years back.

I bet Eddie Grant has some crummy self-run website where he proclaims how great he is, how he's "sick of the music industry" wot spurned him and tries to flog a new album, either by linking to some sub-Amazon e-commerce shop or asking people to send cheques and SAEs to some PO Box number in West London.
