on "...the saga continues" he has a great song praising dj's (in the mix) and another about how great breakdancing is (break song..."they made a hollywood movie 'bout breakdancing, they shoulda taook their cameras right down to the ghetto!")

HAIL YEAH,

S all that good shit, Zapp thru the New Zapp IV You, the Many Facets of Roger. My older sister was a delinquent before me and this and One Way and the East Side Story older comps were the soundtrack to us ditching school together to go to the Slauson Swap Meet

his version of papas got a brand new bag is just ridiculous. an almost impossible to cover song and he turns it into this hyperkinetic funk cartoon.

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 18 October 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I only know 'California Love' and the Scritti appearances, but those are pretty damn kickass. Didn't he shoot himself or his brother or both or something? That wasn't v funky of him.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 18 October 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Great stuff, Roger and Zapp (shout out to Dayton!), but starts to get really damn same-y after a bit. Best stuff "Doo Wa Ditty," "So Ruff, So Tuff" and "More Bounce to the Ounce." They had a great gimmick (the talk box), but perhaps not enough funk to go the distance?

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Monday, 18 October 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Also search:
"It Doesn't Really Matter", "Computer Love" (Zapp).
"As We Lay" (Shirley Murdoch)
And c'mon, you've got to love "I Want To Be Your Man" (Roger)

and yes I want to be your man seconded.

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 18 October 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, EPMD sampled him for the chorus of "Crossover", which is a classic in its own right.

Also also, there's a FANTASTIC Roger Troutman spoof on Chris Rock's "Bigger & Blacker" album.

S: Zapp - Dancefloor

Bill E (bill_e), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

His death is kinda the result of some disagreement he had with his brother over the rights to some of their music, if I recall correctly.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate when people are trying to explain what a talkbox is to someone who doesn't know and cites fucking Frampton or something first. Frampton used it for like one stupid song ever. Roger was the talkbox CHAMPION.

His last recording ever = the hook on Kool Keith's "Master Of The Game", one of Keith's best ever songs IMHO.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

interesting trivia: many of his records, including the one sampled by EPMD, were produced by David Gamson who'd released the leftfield electro/disco Rough Trade 12" Sugar Sugar and one other song only on 2 comps and would later partner w/ Green in the NYC version of Scritti Politti.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

and you would know because you're the DJ's DJ

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

next year I'm aiming to be EVERYONE's DJ.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The other David Gamson song might have been "No Turn On Red", which was on the NME Jive Wire cassette.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

he does a nice job on "boom there she was" from scritti politti's great and underrated "provision", which i'm going to listen to when i get home from work.

dan (dan), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. After the NME cassette it also appeared on the Beggers Banquet punky/dance comp Sex, Sweat and Blood, the new Danceability.

three years pass...

Always knew a couple of his biggest hits but after getting the first couple Zapp albums and a best of Roger & Zapp, I got to say as much as Roger Troutman is credited, I have to think his influence is still a bit under appreciated.

"More Bounce to the Ounce" alone is a crazy ass production for 1980. I always thought that tune was later than that, as it sounds so mechancial and perfect, it sounds like MIDI.
