What of Kevin Shields' "post" MBV work (particularly his remixes)? Classic or dud? Some of it I've quite enjoyed (The Pastels), some of it is rubbish (Placebo's Pure Morning MBV remix sounds not unlike V/Vm).

His cover of Map Reference on the Wire tribute compliation is Godlike!

do covers count as remixes?

Some of the remixes -- the Pastels, Yo La Tengo's "Autumn Sweater" -- have been pretty nice. His "production" work doesn't seem to have had much of a notable impact on the artists being produced.

It occurred to me the other day that "We Have All the Time in the World," from the Peace Together comp, was a pretty good blueprint for a sound that could have done well for Shields through the nineties. Which is to say: it sounded like what mid-to-late period Stereolab were doing (and what generally constituted a "post- rock" zeitgeist for quite a while), and he could have beat them to it by several years.

I was very impressed by his take on "Mogwai Fear Satan."

I quite like the one on XTRMNTR. Probably the second best cut on that album next to Shoot Speed Kill Light.

And I haven't posted yet? I must be sick. The MBV list in general has been down on the remixes arguing that they could all do better themselves or the like -- which may be the case, but I like the end results. I will take what I can get, I admit. ;-)

So did he actually remix the MBV Archestra track on XTRMNTR, or did he write and play on the song? I was really confused on that one, but I agree--Shoot Speed/Kill Light is amazing!

The "MBV Arkestra" track on EEIAO is a rmx of "If They Move, Kill 'Em" -- originally it was a B-side of that single. Sounds like he added plenty of his own FX.

Playing with Primal Scream seems such a waste. Accelerator = rubbish = the sort of 'noise' that anyone can do. Shields is much better than that.

the sort of 'noise' that anyone can do

like a vacuum, eh dr. c? ;)

Exactly!

No really, he's gone from MBV's 'how the hell does he get THAT sound from a geetar' noise to white-noise generator ordinaire. Sad.

in twenty odd yrs do you think we'll see a documentary featuring mssr. sheilds being interviewed from a HUGE bed with a massive, impossibly ornate hand carved headboard, wearing only an open shirt exposing his hairy gut, some gold chains, and a scraggly hippy beard?

(not that any documentaries have ever been made about such figures...)

three months pass...
whenever i listen to the primal scream remix at a suitably loud volume i am convinced it is one of the greatest piece of music ever...
