dont know if this has been done before, the search function didnt seem to like shut up & dance but im listening to no doubt right now, and sort of thinking that this *could* be a grime or garage beat (before it goes into house-y territory near the end anyway).

all the early singles are pretty good (£10 To Get In, Lamborghini, Dance Before The Police Come, Derek Went Mad...), the Death Is Not The End album is quite varied and interesting (featuring some very naff rapping at times but also some great Orbitalesque bleepno and tuff breakbeats with 70s funk samples etc.) and features an edit of The Green Man and the Cohn-free version of Raving I'm Raving. you could also check out the excellent Ragga Twins and Nicolette debut albums featuring their production skills.

don't know if 'Black Men United' is any good - somehow doubt it - not up on their mid 90s jungle stuff or later garage tracks (other than 'No Doubt' which i like).

my favourites on the LP are "Java Bass" and the acoustic version of "Autobiography Of A Crackhead" with Kevin Rowland on guitar (!!)

i have an original Shut Up And Dance records sweatshirt. Not quite sure why I sent away for this - I've never ever bought any other record label or artist-related clothing. twas a cool design, I guess.

they are playing at the Telegraph in Brixtonon friday night. 7 quid on the door, and it all goes to disadvantaged kids.

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

their sets are great cos they'll throw in stuff like 'LFO', 'Some Justice' and 'Renegade Snares' and encourage everyone to remember the vibe or something

Classic.

Hey, did they ever recover financially after getting dragged through several sampling-related lawsuits?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no conceivable way that these guys can ever be considered anything but classic.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. Shut Up & Dance (the label, if not the act themselves) is as responsible as anyone for hardcore, darkside and ESPECIALLY ragga-jungle and grime. Everything the label released before being sued into the background was pretty fantastic (although except for Death is Not the End and the Nicolette record, it's nearly impossible to find.)

There's a great label comp called 'Shut Up And Dance - The First 20 Singles' - seven by them, plus their productions for the Ragga Twins, Nicolette and Rum & Black and so on. It's one of my all-time favourite comps. Death Is Not The End is a good album, but Black Men United isn't.

I'm disappointed that this isn't about the song Aerosmith performed in Wayne's World 2.

classic. the nicolette record is great.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"reclaim the streets" was pretty good, imo. search : "anger management" , "release the gimp" & "reclaim the streets"

fernando, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

may as well big "Movin' Up", their vocal breakbeat garage lick from 2001?
salute Sean B (not the 1XTRA guy) for playing first copy in New York, alerting us that "...A BIG TUNE!"

articles had them calling it accessible pop, unlike their breakbeat instrumentals for da real headz. yeah whatever mate...

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Listening to Black Men United for the first time in a while. Forgot how much I liked "Save It Till the Mourning After" -- and how "I Love U" contrasts it beautifully.
