Oakenfold Fears Technology

OK, I'm exaggerating, but have a read:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/10/18/explorers.pauloakenfold/index.html
Thoughts:
1) Do I really give a crap about what Oakey has to say on these matters? I don't think so.
2) Is he saying anything that we haven't heard from others before? No.
3) I'm surprised to find this sort of story on CNN.

#3 is actually the main reason I started this thread.

ffs, Oakenfold: "Can you imagine Grandmaster Flash on a laptop?"

no, and that's not the point !

actually it's not so weird to find on cnn either:

cnn...time warner...warner music group

Yuck.

I actually thought the Grandmaster Flash quote was like "Gosh, can you imagine how cool that would be?"

it's funny cos i made a reference to 'what if Grandmaster Flash had a laptop' a few years back in an interview re boomselection. weirdly i can sympathise with Oakenfold to an extent but the pros and cons are pretty well matched and the floodgates can't be closed again.

The hit I had with "Starry Eyed Surprise" came from a sample I picked up from watching "Midnight Cowboy."

what was sampled?
thats terrible. i love that movie.

"Can you imagine Grandmaster Flash on a laptop?"

Not really, but then I can't imagine Eric Clapton on a turntable either.

"I don't download music because the quality isn't good enough to play in a club. There's no bottom end on it."

Is he talking about shitty dial-up radio streams here?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ahaha! 'there's no bottom end on it'. i want that on a tshirt.

he sounds like tom petty on that 'kill disco' thread
from a while back.

he's been working with vinyl long enough to have that sniffy attitude i guess - vinyl has the 'fullest' sound innit, but that only matters to true purists. DJing with burned mp3s is obv. problematic tho because you risk volume/levels inconsistency more.

I think his comment about 'people would rather watch a DJ play vinyl because you can see what they're doing' is interesting because that's never had much appeal for me (as fun as it is watching turntablists at the DMC Mixing Championship and the like) and is surely just for serious anoraks. granted you can HEAR a DJ like Oakenfold or Sasha build and construct and craft a powerful and mesmeric mix by mixing things in and out on more than two decks with added triggered samples and all kinds of knob-twiddling, and that becomes an artform in itself...but are the majority really able to really appreciate that at 3am? and isn't it all incredibly pretentious, complicated and eventually just tedious? i do respect what they've done tho.

weird thing is, he never mastered basic beatmatching (as 1000s who've heard him live will attest)
