I finally got to hear a Clutch album last night (they've got a big grass-roots fanbase in town) and goddamn does it sound like Electric Six gone Zeppelin. Anybody else hear the similarity? I'm not taking sides yet cuz I've only heard one Clutch album once.

Was that the band who did "A Shogun Named Marcus"?

Dude from Clutch needs to like gargle or something.

Have they changed much since '93? I remember thinking that song was like a second-rate Helmet...

I have heard them quite a bit over the years thanks to one particular broke-ass friend who borrows my bass whenever his band has a show, and I can confirm that they still sound quite a bit like they did then. Only their vocal dude's voice is much more gravelly. Not really gravelly in a metal way, more like in a Beefhart way. Or maybe in an old chain-smoking Jewish woman from the Bronx way. Yeah.

that old clutch ep royally pooped but since then they've turned into a rocking machine. it's not very helmet-y at all in my opinion. it's all classic rock but gooooood classic rock. Listen to the space album or the elephant riders. Both have some turds, but the good songs...they'll clean your clock!

yeah what I heard was way more classic rock than helmet

So many friends of mine cite Clutch as a band to hear, but I've never bothered to listen to them. I did quite like the Electric Six recoord. So, are they worth checking out, Antoine? Would I approve?

I only heard one album and I don't know which one it was (my drinking buddy Harlan was playing it), but you might dig it. Depends if you're into stoner rock at all. If so, give 'em a try.

haha wow a discussion about sludgy Maryland stoner rock on ILM!

Actually Clutch changed quite a bit after their first full length record and then kinda stuck with that. The first record was way more agressive and after that they got way more stoner. Not that that's a bad thing. I personally think the self titled and 'Elephant Riders' records are fantastic and they've gotten kinda OK after that. Although the first track "American Sleep" on 'Pure Rock Fury' is easly Clutch at their best. Their latest record is kinda, ehhh. Oh and finally the song on the 'High Times' compilation called "Willie Nelson" is full of loving stoner hooks.

The thing people generally dig about Clutch is that Neil Fallon is quite the words-smith at times and spouts out some amazing shit with the utmost of eez.

Weenis... a proud Clutch fan

I've been hearing about Clutch for years but it wasn't until Harlan told me about the lyrics to this song "Mob Goes Wild" that I actually got enthusiastic to hear them

Please allow me to adjust my pants
So that I may dance the good time dance
And put the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance

Give disease so the swine will marry and propagate lies.
Tough luck for elected officials. The beast you see got fifty eyes.
Bring it on home, spread the wealth. Play it cool, the hand's been dealt.
Now, all the odds are in our favor. Save the victory speeches for later.

Streets on fire, the mob goes wild.

21 guns, box made of pine, letter from the government sealed and signed
Delivered Federal Express on your mother's doorstep.

Condoleeza Rice is nice, but I prefer A-Roni.
And that man on the T.V. who speaks to the dead, you know that man's a phony.
Everybody move to Canada and smoke lots of pot.
Everybody move to Canada right now. Here's how we do it:
Bum rush the border guard before he and his dog ever knew it.
