Has anyone see Rye Coalition live? Are they any good?

It's been a long time, but I always found them to be fun in a rocking bar band kind of way. The vocalist doesn't play an instrument; he sort of paces the stage, looking like he wants to beat the shit out of you.
I like the song "ZZ Topless."

I saw them about three years ago, and I was horrified at how terrible they were. The sound was thin & trebbly, they fucked up their tunes (drunk) and it seemed a fairly straight GnR tribute act... bummer, really. But that was a long time ago.

(incidentally, I agree with every one of Ian's comments -- I just saw those things as positives I guess!)

I've seen them three times and they are awesome.

I'm not a huge fan of them but they do a pretty good live show (at least the one time I saw them, which was at Rutgers). The one guitarist ran around the audience with a wireless guitar, which was a little cheesy but entertaining (I've seen other bands do this much better). The singer's voice wasn't too hot live. The bass player was really thin and androgynous and gyrated in a cool way.

ive seen them at least once a year since 1995 and i think they're quite solid. ive noticed though in recent years that if they're drunk, the show sucks. but when they're on their game, theyre AMAZING.

the smaller guitar dude knows every jimmy page solo ever and he made sure that we all knew it too.

I was so drunk I don't really remember.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw them live and have yet to hear any of their recordings.

"Rock n rolllllllllll" in a very forced way.

Also, I ought to qualify my earlier post by saying that I really liked their earlier, more tense/emo/jesus lizardy records and was disappointed at the way they changed.

Jesus Christ are they EVER awful!

OTM, ian. i recently saw them at the fall concert my station puts on annually and they seemed too "boys will be boys" rock and roll for me. they played "fucking with beautiful posture" and had trouble remembering the words.

I saw them after that last full-length came out, which I didn't like as much as The Lipstick Game, but they put on a good show despite playing to like 10 people after three terrible hardcore bands (yay Richmond). Their guitarist is the most entertaining.

lipstick game
hee saw duh kaet

first 7" is real great too. first screamy band i ever got into.

brock (brock), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I love The Lipstick Game. It's like right in between their screamy Jesus Lizard phase and their nu-Led Zep phase, and it has the best of both worlds.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the lipstick game was the soundtrack to my summer of 99. that was the summer i split up with a serious boyfriend, turned 21, did all sorts of crazy things; in short, the one of the best summers EVER.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The title song is so good. "PUUUSH! PUUUSH!"

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus i'm going to have to go out and buy this again.

brock (brock), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Rye Coalition routinely plays at the bar I work at (Uncle Joe's, Jersey City)- they're a fantastic live show. They do tend to get pretty drunk, though, so I can see why people might criticize 'em for that.

If you haven't seen them recently, go.

cdwill, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

DOOD, FUCK THAT. BOOZE ISNT WHY THEY SUCK. ITS THE SUCK THAT IS MAKING THEM SUCK.

DEEBZ (ddb), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I just moved to the same block as Uncle Joe's.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Come in for a drink sometime- I'm the bouncer on the weekends.

Use the bathroom at home, though, since the ones at the bar are pretty horrible.

cdwill, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, are you an philipino guy? I've been a couple of times, and it's possible you were nice enough to let my girlfriend and me in for free.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No, that's Jesse, the door guy. I'm the paunchy white guy with dark brown hair, who tends to smoke a lot of cigarettes...

cdwill, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool. I'm sure I'll be in sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

i was hardcore into these dudes in college until they got a little too "RAWK N ROOOOOLLL" which is the stage unfortunately captured at the beginning of this thread. "the lipstick game" still rules though.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 22 July 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

dave grohl produced their last album apparently.
