Top 12 (?) gimmicky "collectibles"

-- or, "Did I fall for that?" The "insufferable music snob" thread reminded me of the (80s-90s?) practice of issuing limited-edition-cutout-picture-disc-with-three-postcards-and-a-numbered-badge stuff -- you know, the sort of thing that made the back pages of Record Collector. Couldn't mention it in that thread, though, due to the, erm, non-snob-compatible nature of some of the music. So, what are your top gimmicky Made To Be Collectible records? For me, I suppose it is:
-- The Fall: double 3" CD single of "Jerusalem"; numbered limited edition of 4000, packed in orange wallet-type thingy
-- Voice of the Beehive: "Monsters and Angels" CD-single in "honey pack", ie clear plastic sleeve filled with gooey stuff
-- Kirsty MacColl: "Days", 3" CD single in kite-shaped cover
-- 4AD's "Lonely Is an Eyesore" compilation: ltd ed with foldout, booklet etc (actually, this is wonderful).*
OK, didn't make it to 12, but never mind. *What I really wanted, of course, was the ultra-limited wooden box edition with the album in several formats, video, rice paper art print and whatnot. Seen it once.

Frazier Chorus 'Sloppy Heart' 3" CD Single - shaped like... a heart. Won't stand up.

What was it about 3" CD Singles? They were always packaged badly.

With the 3-D panel, you mean.

How about Alice Cooper's "School's Out" packaged in a cover that folds open to become a school desk... the record wrapped in a pair of panties? Or Alice's "Muscle of Love", in a cardboard box with a book cover?

Sean, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or PiL's "Metal Box" in a metal film can?

Sean, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean -- you know, I never knew that about "School's Out" until I was buying a copy for the record store I worked at and found two database entries:

126. Alice COOPER ::: SCHOOL'S OUT
127. Alice COOPER ::: SCHOOL'S OUT ::: W/ PANTIES!!!
ENTER SELECTION / * = BACK / ^C = CANCEL ________

So I opened it up and looked for some panties. The funny thing, though, was that obviously I wouldn't have recognized what sort of panties they were supposed to be. If only the woman selling the record had realized this, she could have stuffed any old pair of panties in there and gotten an extra $10 out of me.

Oh, well if LPs count:
Sticky Fingers & VU +Nico - Warhol covers
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti & III
Stranglers - Raven, also had a holograph (changes image when you tilt it)
Countless LPs where the jackets were different colors (New Order/Ceremony, D is for Dumptruck, In through the out Door)

Nobody has mentioned all that came w/ the vinyl version of the first GYBE! record yet. Hand-glued photo, the crushed penny, the blueprint of the universe. That's my #1.

I also like the cover of the vinyl version of Out In Worship's LP, wrapped in shreds of a Chinese newspaper from Chicago's Chinatown. Like the cover more than the music itself, actually.

electric sound of jim, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both the Cramps and Grand Funk Railroad had 3D covers, but not the kind like the Stones; they were like those old books (and movies) where two different images were printed side by side in red and green, and you viewed it with special red and green glasses. The records came with the glasses, too. Know what I'm talking about?

Sean, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Stereolab records with painted sleeves... the Spectrum CD with the oil in the sleeve.. the million colours of vinyl each Sub Pop 7" was released on..

I remember at the shop I used to work at there was a Lene Lovich album bearing the sticker "Limited Edition Black Vinyl".Ha ha ha.What about that Manfred Mann's Earth Band album The Good Earth that entitled everyone who bought it to a square foot of land in Wales?

-Spiritualized's glow-in-the-dark jewelbox for the PURE PHASE album.

Did you know that each In Through the Out Door lp cover changed colour when water was applied to it?

garden man, Saturday, 29 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss came in a limited edition "blood pack" - a clear plastic bag filled with red gooey liquid with little discs, with skulls printed on them, floating in it.

Motorhead had an album that came in a leather sleeve.
Also, didn't Merzbow or one of the Boredoms guys release a cassette that couldn't be removed from the car stereo that it was in, so you had to buy the whole car in order to hear the tape? Good story whether it's true or not.......

Radiohead dod something similar iirc, albeit on a smaller scale, with promo tape copies of, er, I think it was OK Computer sealed inside a walkman.

i nominate the entire discography of sabbat. http://welcome.to/sabbat/

picture discs, 6" eps, shaped discs, gatefolds, colored vinyl, different covers, handmade, handnumbered, with inserts, and never more than 1000 pressed. i guess they know their market...

There was a Hothouse Flowers single released in a flower-shaped origami sleeve. I also have a Darling Buds single that came in a 'snowstorm' sleeve.

Mippy (Mippy), Sunday, 30 October 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

There were copies of Bjork's Vespertine where the entire album was split out over multiple discs, one song per disc. Kind of annoying, really.

How about that White Stripes mini-record player?

footlog, Monday, 31 October 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

There was some noise band, I think it was Chop Shop or something like that, who put an LP sandwiched between two pretty hefty slabs of steel.

Joel (aquabahn), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I didn't buy it - got it as a promotional item, but a copy of Pills N Thrills N Bellyaches that came with the CD and a first aid kit in a blue and yellow plastic capsule that broke apart, with first aid kit to be found inside (band-aids, aspirin, antacid)

Fun stuff

Also, the Sexual Mikshake single (Space Gnome) that came with an elastic-band strung facemask, that allowed you to look like an alien while listening to the glorious sounds of the album. Actually pretty much all the Sexual Milkshake releases had awesome extra crap in them

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

meant "listening to the glorious sounds of the record" of course

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

also, the 12" picturedisc for World Of Twist's "Sons Of The Stage" that has them posing in a sorta Houses Of the Holy scene, with their genitals airbrushed out always brings the rofls

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

also, did anyone else ever purchase the BakTabak interview picturediscs? I had the 4x7" one for the cure, that had head on the door style prints in black and white picturdiscs and came in this nice little plastic pvc sleeve dealie

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 31 October 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

"Laser Cut" albums that reflected (refracted?) prismatic patterns, I remember specifically a Split Enz single of "History Never Repeats" and I'm also thinking the first album and that maybe there were more in this era (c. 1981?)

Declan Zimmerman (Declan Zimmerman), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

RRRecords' "anti-record" series of record/art objects that couldn't be played, or, in at least one case, were pressed with lock grooves guaranteed to damage your stylus.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 31 October 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
The Lightning Seeds Album Jollification came with Strawberry Scented Packaging and all of the singles had some sort of Children's pop-up book theme to them, for example on Lucky You there were pull tabs so you could make the slot machine on the cover make a jackpot, or on Perfect you pulled a tab and the picture of a traffic light goes from grayscale to color and the caption reads: "Crimson Sun on Traffic Lights a pefect day a perfect night, then there was Marvellous where you pulled a tab and the window on the front opens and a strawberry pops out at you and the caption reads "Open up the window and jump into the blue", then for Change you pulled a tab and the strawberry on the cover changes into Groucho Marx glasses and moustache. Those four are a favorite part of my collection. Although New Order released a diecut box for 1963 which is pretty cool, andFrankie Goes To Hollywood released a limited numbered box for the cd single Power of Love and it had some postcards and a FGTH Badge. Annie lennox's Diva Album and singles were all unique as well. What I treasure most of all is the Japanese Madonna Box set with 40 (yes Fourty) 3" singles spanning her career through Something to Remember. The sleeves are like little 12" record sleeves with original artwork. Pretty bitchin' collectable.

Hey, it was just a coupla days ago that I halfway pondered starting a "TS: Led Zeppelin III's wheel vs. Physical Graffiti's die-cut vs. In Through The Out Door's water-paint sleeve inside one of SIX different covers inside a plain brown bag!" thread! Then decided it was too arcane.

That Slayer blood-pack thing woulda been more impressive if the band actually DONATED some of their own plasma for authenticity, รก la Kiss.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

I have a record geek friend who not only bought all six of those Zeppelin covers, but actually mapped out the entire bar scene that the records depict (each of the photos is taken from a different viewpoint).

Spazz "tastin' spoon" 5" picture disc.

chad (chad), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

Heh heh...wasn't one of those six covers much, much more scarce than any of the other five? (The old "Star Wars" card gambit.)

Incidentally, I remember reading an old review of ITTOD, in which the reviewer asserted that the guy sitting at the bar was Paul Rodgers! (Was that for real?)

xpost: "Laser Cut" albums that reflected (refracted?) prismatic patterns

My cousin's copy of Styx's Paradise Theatre did that on one side.

Jethro Tull's Stand Up, with a big ol' standup of the band when you opened the gatefold. On later editions, you could see where they patched the image on the gatefold to cover where the flaps were supposed to go.

I remember Thurston Moore bragging about having a copy of a Black Oak Arkansas album with a deed to 1 sq. ft. of land in Black Oak, on a lot that had been purchased by Jim Dandy.

Also, I saw a 7" by an early 90s punk band which had the big hole drilled way off center, and the sleeve annouced the fact that it was thus unplayable. Also, on the back, there was a spot for the limited edition number, "Your Number is ___" And every copy had "1" written on it. Can't remember who it was, 'cause it didn't tempt me to buy it.

bendy (bendy), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

this thread should be dedicated to witcyst

he sent me a package with 12 CDs wrapped in various different bizarre packes, along with an old framed hologram of horses, cut in half with one side upside down, around 1000 small glow in the dark rubber bands, an english flag, parts from a travel board game and a variety of other junk. also - it (the contents of the package) smelt really bad for a few months.
