great news!

if it's half as good as the first one, then it'll only be a quarter as good as poses. i'm hoping/praying for so much more. "gay messiah," which he's been playing live for awhile, is a promising start at least.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

that's right actually - want is not anywhere near as good as poses. This album was always designated to be the one (of the pair) where he takes more risks though.

Oh, I am so excited now! (I love Want One but yeah, Poses is better.)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh not *this* again.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Revive! Wow! I'm only just listening to it for the first time right now, and it's quite nice but not as good as either Want One or Poses so far.

Disappointing. He just gets worse with every album. He showed such promise. And couldn't he have come up with a better song for the Antony duet? "An old whore's diet gets me going in the morning". It's a bit cutesy. Also, it sounds like they used up all the production money on Want One. Still better than most singer/songwriter type's out there, but what a let-down.

Also, I don't know who directed the DVD, but they nearly eliminated everything that is unique and charming about his shows. He barely says anything between songs! They just cut from one song to another. I felt so cheated. There's some scenes of him walking around San Francisco blabbing away, but it's not enough.

Guitarthur and the Ecstasy Defecators (Arthur), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Just finished, and I agree somewhat. I was expecting less of a pop sensibility but these songs just meander and hang about. I've come to love Want One, and what redeems that one is how he luxuriates in the pop beauty and possibilities of his own (physical) voice when all else fails when the other aspects of the songwriting flags. I don't know what he's falling back on here - martyrdom? ornateness? I've had a bad run recently of changing my mind after disastrous first listens so I won't go any further, but I don't see this one being a grower.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah a huge drop off after want one, but still worth it for the good stuff. still the bees knee's live too.

piscesboy, Sunday, 13 February 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

OTM, Guitarthur. I admire dthe first album and loved "Poses"; "Want One" struck me as a textbook exampmle of what happens when too much corporate money and a charming if undeniable will to power cripple songcraft. I always thought Rufus started recording way too young, before he'd gotten a handle on his singing and songwriting. "Want One" confirmed it.

Piscesboy: he IS the shit live. Miami, May 2002: one of the best shows I ever saw

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 13 February 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes he is the shit (as borne out by the bonus DVD) and on this record too. I don't know what you're hearing that you don't like. This is his best album since his first one. Scott Walker bizarro world tendencies in full effect. The opening hymn is staggering in its oddness, as is the concluding suite. The baptism by sperm song is genius as well.

(By the way--If you like Rufus lots and haven't heard Andrew Bird yet then get on that shit.)

andrew who? tell all mr/ms matter.

piscesboy, Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Andrew Bird is the straight Rufus Wainwright. Vocally the two sound like twins, though Andrew demonstrates restraint where Rufus goes operatic whenever the opportunity arises. Andrew plays violin in and around Chicago with and without his backing band The Bowl of Fire, just classical show pop moves all down the line that a Rufus fan would get much enjoyment out of. A place to start is Weather Systems, though he does have a brand new one out.

Worst. Cover. Art. EVER.
