microhouse, what is it called IRL?

is it really seen as particularly distinct from restrained/subtle 'techno/house/tech-house'?

Well, whatever I seem to have a lot of it!

wobbly bob, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

good for you! as for the question, ive never haerd anyone use the term "microhouse" irl. the music is mostly refered to as "minimal (house)" by non-critics.

:|, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, minimal house is the term the DJs in Brighton use. Whenever I start talking about 'microhouse' in relation to Kompakt type stuff poeple asuming I'm talking about ultra-minimal clicky stuff.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it's minimal house or tech house
don't call it microhouse

stomp (+dancefloor), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

unless you want to look like a trendy bandwagoner, that is

stomp (+dancefloor), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always thought Microhouse would make perfect sense if the tracks followed Akufen's way of "microsampling", ie splicing hundreds of little musical fragments as the basis for hyperactive house tracks.

It doesn't make as much sense when you hear one of those smooth/gliding/dubby Kompakt tracks.

Although I don't have the actual copy on hand, when Phil Sherburne coined microhouse in The Wire a few years back I don't think he wasn't really referring to the dubby/gliding Kompakt trax anyway - but the undercurrent strain of techno like Farben, Isolee, Perlon-stuff, Klicks'n'Cuts, Soft Pink Truth early 12"s, and Matt Herbert circa Let's All Make Mistakes.

As far as I understand, this fringe sound has since maximized and revitalized the mainstream in various ways, and is now quite commonplace - hence, is being described in differently, with predictable results.

At worst case, around here it gets tech-house - if you're lucky, minimal. Most of this stuff was dismissed for ages her though, one DJ explaining to me that it just didn't 'sound right' - which was obv. was the whole appeal of it for me anyway.

However, personal fave - Foggy-Techno.

mdieter, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I call it Intellectual House, frankly.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure, IDM-house.

mdieter, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, if that catches on it'll kill it for sure.

here in singapore they call it "that weird clicky crap that nobody likes".

"Normal" people (aka non dance fans) I know recoil in horror when hearing the term "German House". So never use that in your conversation.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"House" /= "trance", but I often have to do a lot of convincing to people to prove this.

Micro F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

in glasgow we call it whorehouse.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean Optimo calls it Whorehouse

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Normal" people (aka non dance fans) I know recoil in horror when hearing the term "German House".

True. Or "German techno nights". I got lots of funny looks after coming back from Berlin and saying what I'd been up to in the evenings.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I would think Germans would be one of the only ones who would understand. But apparently not.

Micro F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

This was after I'd come back to the UK.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, i came on here to post exactly the same as stirmonster.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

no. in a recently conducted gallup survey, 78% of all glaswegians responded 'aye, i cannae get enough o that whorehouse, ye ken'. go and check big shug's whorehouse emporium in possil. the local neds are going daft for perlon.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "How To Kill The DJ Part 2" actually coming out this year then?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it's out now in france and japan. supposedly out in the rest of the world in november, out in glasgow the week before christmas and out in the rest of the uk in january. why the odd release schedule? ask the crazy french!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a 2 CD mix right?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

that's right - one mixed, one unmixed.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah - what held it up so long?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a really long and dull story alba, but the biggest delay was caused by sacem (the french mcps) who make the old soviet bureaucracies seem positively speedy in their decision making processes.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
How To Kill the DJ 2 is now out in the US! Other Music and Forced Exposure are now carrying it for a generous price.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah, as mentioned upthread, saying "german house" gets some funny looks. I can't remember what context caused me to use that description, but the general record store public is definitely not with it.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have started to feel sick at the thought that Whorehouse / Microhouse could ever be called Tech-house. Eugh.

3underscore (___), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
May I say how much I love the term 'whore house'?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Frank Ski!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)
