Steve Winwood "Arc Of A Diver" - what's this song actually about????

Having re-discovered the great Winwood recently, I was listening to "Arc Of A Diver" and trying to comprehend some of the lyrics to this song?

Some of the lines in it are vaguely cryptic & mysterious and I am wanting some answers as to what he means when he's saying...

"She bathes me in sweetness I cannot reveal..."

"I Play the piano no more runny honey..."

"Lean streaky music spawned on the streets..."

" Arc of a diver effortlessly my mind in sky and when I wake up..."

...and his he perhaps critiquing himself own musical counterparts by singing.... "Cause my rock'n'roll is putting on weight...."???

I still love the track but even after all these years I still can't fathom it out?

Any takers?

Did Viv Stanshall write the words?

Serghei Daduismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes indeed. Stanshall co-penned this one whilst all the other tracks on '...Diver" album were written with Will Jennings.

Next question: who was Viv Stanshall and I read somewhere that he died sometime in the 90s and Winwood played a live tribute for him!

Winwood's never been a lyricist, I'd be surprised if he's ever written any lyrics.

The Bonzo Dog (Doo-Dah) Band: C or D?

Isn't it the thoughts going through the guy's head while diving after seeing a chance and taking it?

Speaking of Steve Winwood...

one year passes...

I went to look up the drummer on this track, cause it swings so f'ing hard, expecting some stalwart 70s session king. But no it's Stevie himself?

so wild that Winwood didn't write a single song on this iconic album, I had no idea

(I had to replace my copy recently so I was giving it a spin)

Wait -- you mean lyrics, right? He's always composed music.

it must be that, on the discogs entry the songs are all credited to other people! but yes, he does get a writing credit so I assume it's just the lyrics he didn't do, that makes much more sense

which, by the way, I've never understood. Same with Elton John. I figure a reasonably intelligent singer-composer could come up with some degree of lyrical expression. If Bernard Sumner could figure it out...

I guess Jim Capaldi wrote a lot of the lyrics in Traffic

All of them, apart from the Dave Mason compositions.

I think Will Jennings usually did lyrics for Winwood's '80s records.

IIRC, years later when Eric Clapton asked him to write (most of) the lyrics to "Tears in Heaven," Jennings initially refused, telling him the song was far too personal and that Clapton should do it. But Clapton insisted and something about that story feels appropriate given how such a terrible tragedy could result in a horribly bland and underwhelming song.

would you know my name
if you identified me as the singer of this shitty lachrymose song

lmao

That was actually Jenning's first draft.

birdistheword, Sunday, 11 August 2024 18:09 (one year ago)

God Clapton is such a piece of shit. “eh could you write some lyrics about my son, can’t be bothered myself”

brimstead, Sunday, 11 August 2024 20:58 (one year ago)

I thought this was a winwood thread

He wrote the lyrics to "Midland Maniac", the best track on his first album.

Winwood also wrote the words to "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, which many would call his best song.

It makes sense for Sumner to write uninspired lyrics for New Order because the words are only a makeweight in their music. Some composers do better work when they are given an outside element to inspire their creation (regardless of one's personal evaluation of Taupin's lyrics to "Dirty Little Girl").

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 21:19 (eight months ago)
