Rock instrumentals, but I don't think of it as math rock cos I can't do math. Through the Link Wray stargate to the Knitting Factory and beyond(a non-retro true blast from the past). Got it Sat., fair memorized by Sun. Not perfect but not bad. My exercycle salutes you. www.ecstaticpeace.com, notekillers.com

I'm with Don. What's math rock? Answer: An invention by those who
are challenged by arithmetic -for- people who can't count. The print that came with Notekillers made me expect a headache but I was wowed
when it failed to quite fit the description.

everytime i watch the notekillers, i become less impressed with stinking lizaveta.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Stinking Lizaveta aren't famous enough to be unimpressed with. Now, where'd Disrhythmia get to?

George Smith, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Maria! Are you going to book them/have you? I was just thining of that before I saw yr. post. George, yeah: "(Ayler/Pistols)" doesn't say it, if that's the hype you're disagreeing with (although that would be an interesting mash-up [Jesus/Antichrist])

don, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Bless you all -- now what are you talking about?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

don, we've already booked them. we are possibly doing a show with them in another month or two.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was the meme, Don. As a marketing pigeonhole, it probably works, though, for whatever niche they're going to be thrust into.

Ned, Philly instro trios and such. Stinking Lizaveta and Disrhythmia are metal or towards it. Notekillers aren't.

George Smith, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

microtonal nowave surf musik gets closer to stuff like "the zipper". didn't someone blab that in the notes and/or bio? i dunno. sounds sweet in any case. nice racket. and i guess thurston only really heard the first single pre-sonik tooth, and it's the other stuff that he didn't hear that can sometimes sound remarkably toothy. go figure. the song "juggernauts" is waaaaay toothy.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I dig that the songs are concise. T.Girls and solo Branca and Chapman could go on forever. But having this many tracks of same approach is always tricky. Plus they play it cool n casual (on the surface), tempting me to take them for granted. On the other hand, I did listen over and over and over in 24 hours like exercycle can testify is *quite* rare, so they must be doing something right (to put it mildly).Goes good with Crime.

"Clock Wise" is the one that knocked me for a loop.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

O yes. A zone of their own.But can't resist the reflexive pigeonholing, just a little Don't have the archival in hand for comparing, but am I so wrong to think of MX-80 Sound (when they were good), Thurston solo (ditto)? Surf music? Was thinking Link as mad scientist, not rockabilly per se. They've assimilated; no mere "oh yes the riff from *this* song + or even x the lick from *that*." More like,"Ah, think I knew that 'un's great uncle. Might could tell, if the youngster grew a beard." Ha, big IF there! Ho-hum here comes another tornado (sorry to go off subject gotta take cover)

don, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(all clear for the moment)Also, they kill with der strum. Like if Sonny Sharrock hadn't gotten into slide, but continued to improve anyway. Also strum of say VU's "What Goes on,"(speaking of Bo Diddley), Nile Rodgers, Mayo on ONE MAN DRIVES.They mention listening to reggae though; I hadn't picked up any of that (the strum again? Hteirs is more of a dip and rolling strum, though, not comping.)

Intro to the band and related, with hot links, then quite a lively interview w Mr. First, working away at many projects, characteristically for sure (check the expansive adventures resulting in that thereUniversary album he mentions, where he first worked with Shelley Hirsch, guest on the new nk):
