peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

um, yeah, but only the first album.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i liked the old pornographers better

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Laws Have Changed" and the video for the "The Laws Have Changed" are invincible.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

lame

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

just kidding.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like the NP, also check out the AC Newman album from this year. Eminently hummable and very NP-esque (though no Neko Case).

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost on the "lame"

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

underwhelmed by ac newman album, except for a few songs. zumpano has this one awesome song that strikes me as almost as good as the np's.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Zumpano...much better.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

except for a few songs

Like the first one. And the second. And the third... Heck, they're all pretty good.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ill give it another try today, nate.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What's so great about being "hummable". Both the NPs and AC Newman are flogging old rope. There's only about a couple of hundred bands already done it to death already.

everything, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

but theyre doing it better than most.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That's probably true, but for me they still cannot revitalise an essentially used-up genre.

everything, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

("seriously, Ben - it's not worth your time.... move on to another thread.... just pretend you never read some of these comments... Look, some people are just bound not to get it.... don't take it personally... go ahead.... just click the goddamned new answers button... hanging out here will only frustrate you more...")

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

and STAY out.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Carl's old band Superconductor were 10 times more interesting.

everything, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know about that but they certainly had 10 times as many guitarists.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i havent heard superconductor - but i like legions of guitarists. is there a good album to get?

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

EVERY OLD BAND IS BETTER

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

get the album that has the song "there goes helen" or something like that.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard "Bastardsong" (1996), but I've got "Hit Songs for Girls" (1993) which is pretty cool. But best is the "Heavy With Puppy" single. It's a real racket. Overall, I think they were one of those bands where most of their reputation is from their live performances, at least here in Canada. They still occasionally get together to do a gig or two.

everything, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I just can't handle the fucking nonsense that S1ocki alluded to much more wittily. And the idea that "a hundred bands have done it to death already" is completely idiotic.

So I'll just leave it at "The New Pornographers are awesome. So much fun live, and everything they put out is super fun. I also enjoyed Zumpano and Superconductor. 'Look What the Rookie' did is a great album."

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"EVERY OLD BAND IS BETTER "

I didn't say they were better. I said they were 10 times more interesting. Face it man, it's the truth

everything, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't know

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The New Pornographers are better than most other pop-rock bands (including other bands featuring members of the New Pornographers) because they wrote and recorded "The Laws Have Changed," "It's Only Divine Right," and "Letter From An Occupant" and those other bands did not.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If any NP fans still haven't got the Zumpano records, you NEED to search them out. They're Newman's best work, I swear.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The beatles were the height of pop music what with their classical bent.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Quarrymen were so much more interesting.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

belig

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

for the record

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew OTM!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

matthew would have been more otm if he had mentioned "the slow descent into alcoholism."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

won't anyone think about the title cut off mass romantic

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What's so great about being "hummable". Both the NPs and AC Newman are flogging old rope. There's only about a couple of hundred bands already done it to death already.

Yeah, that melodic shit has been done before. People need to move on. Mozart was rockin that shit 200 years ago. You should check out this new band that plays everything on dog whistles, so it's beyond the range of human hearing... though there first EP was better... blah blah blah

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

In the streetlight dawn, this beat turns on...

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if you're thinking of interestingness only in abstract, non-dancing-around-the-room-related terms, I think Dan Bejar's relationship to/position within the New Pornographers is pretty damn interesting.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Slow Descent" and "Mass Romantic" are great too. I agree.

That new song "Graceland" on the Matador At 15 comp is pretty hot too.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Slow Descent" kills. I must have missed the meeting where we decided pop was pass-ay.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone managed to track down the mythical Japanese Electric Version bonus track "Turn"?? Whenever someone "has it" on S0ul53ek, it turns out to be "Your Daddy Don't Know."

I've said this on 5 other NP threads, but I wish they'd put out an EP of the covers they've done.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i like dan's songs the best

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Am i the only one who thought (Todd) Fancey's album was better than AC Newman's?

damn.

damn son, Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I met someone the other day who has the same opinion.

I don't agree, though. The AC Newman record is just okay, but it's got a few gems on it. The Fancey thing is dudsville.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
actually seriously guys. i can think of no other band (joycore or otherwise) has made me so exuberant on so many separate occasions.

TS: the NPs putting out only one more fantastic album similar to the first two vs. the NPs putting out a bunch of albums, where their style evolves (and maybe MAYBE quality declines)

im totally torn.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sick of everyone telling me that i should check out the new pornographers and that i'd totally like them. i just downloaded "the laws have changed" and "letter from an occupant" cuz they were on that pitchfork half-decade list, and i'm frankly nonplussed.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm all for the NP only putting out one more on the TS tip. It wouldn't be a big deal and they've already given us quite a bit of good stuff. (But then again, wouldn't that solidify themselves as a niche band only together long enough to supply the given market? That's too much fodder for anti-Pornographers.)

earinfections (Nick Twisp), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i just downloaded "the laws have changed" and "letter from an occupant" cuz they were on that pitchfork half-decade list, and i'm frankly nonplussed.

bah. it's all about The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism. and The Mary Martin Show.

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I still find The Fake Headlines my favorite as long as its turned up to 10. And Mass Romantic and Slow Descent. I always have thought Letter kinda sucked, too.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

centre for holy wars is my favorite song ever, but it's the only song I've heard off mass romantic. Bought Electric Version and sold it a week later. I'm kind of in limbo here.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I really love the New Pornographers (especially when Dan Bejar isn't singing), and I love all of the solo stuff from the band (again, except for Dan Bejar's).

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I once grabbed a CD from my shelf without looking and put it in (sometimes I'll do that, just to have a listen to something without expectations...maybe I'm weird). I thought it was some sort of Bowie thing, but then I looked at the CD and it was Your Blues. I liked Destroyer/Bejar much more after that.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Bejar's second-rate Bowieisms so very much.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Destroyer's my favourite of the associated projects, aside from the defunct Zumpano, although I love the Fancey album dearly. Matthew, you are a mentalist; 'Sunbrite'! 'Strayed Out'! 'In Town'! it's WAY more consistant and enjoyable than the Newman record.

jaymc, try the title track from Mass Romantic before giving up, and perhaps 'Miss Teen Wordpower' from the second album. I believe those two are the best they've done.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost you need to listen to some bowie since you don't know what you are talking about in regards to bejar.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Which Bowie other than the twenty Bowie albums that I own should I pick up?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hey bejar only leans on one bowie album mister!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i hafta say dismissing bejar but not bowie for being a ripoff is some sorta double standard though.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no problems with ripping people off, I just hate it when people do a bad job of it.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I don't question whatever joy people get from their Dan Bejar records; he seems like an intelligent and perfectly decent dude, and he could be a lot worse. But his albums get on my nerves something fierce.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

fair enough!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
