Donna Summer: Search and Destroy?

Would you believe there isn't a D.S.-only thread that I could find in the archives?
I just got the deluxe double disc "Bad Girls" solely for the Moroder and am not disappointed. Where to from here fellas?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Get "I Feel Love", fill up an entire CD with it and press play.
"Bad Girls" is great, as you know. If you want the 12" versions, then "The Disco Collection" is good, with great extended versions of "I Feel Love", "Last Dance", and more.
The only other proper album of hers I own is "I Remember Yesterday", which nobody ever seems to mention for some reason. I love it though. "Love's Unkind" sounds exactly like Pulp's "Disco 2000", all that's missing is the "Gloria" riff.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Every single album she did before she split with Moroder is totally essential (esp. Love to Love You Baby and Once Upon a Time, unfortunately the one with "I Feel Love" is pretty eh other than that, but fuck it is the FULL LENGTH version.) After she split with him though, you can pretty much stop.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Once Upon A Time is amazing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, that's "The *Dance* Collection". And I wasn't so clear -- the versions aren't from Bad Girls, as my comment above implies. (just "Hot Stuff", "Dim All the Lights", and "Walk Away".
(xpost)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ffs, the versions aren't *exclusively* from Bad Girls. I have no brain cells or energy left after the Sox-Yanks game.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The second disc of the "Bad Girls" deluxe edition has the 12" eight minute version of "I Feel Love".
I have a hard time believing this isn't the full length. It gets better than this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW: Summer minus Moroder = dud?
Is this correct?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Patrick Cowley Mix of "I Feel Love" is 16 minutes long. Some of the trancier, FX-laden parts sound dated now. It's still great, but I prefer the tidier eight-minute versioni.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

gets better than this?, of course.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

First off, the one with "I Feel Love," I Remember Yesterday, is not "eh." I actually think the campy, cheeky title track is probably the most undervalued entry in the entire Summer catalogue... unless its the majority of her eponymous LP (produced by Quincy Jones). No one ever mentions how fantastic "Mystery of Love" (based on a Bach prelude!), "If It Hurts Just a Little" (sampled by Cassius), and "Love is Just a Breath Away" are. Seriously, this is a fantastic warm-up for Thriller. And, to her credit, Summer doesn't fuck up "Lush Life" too badly at all.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the fx bits on that remix.

Search search search "Love Trilogy" which is totally essential. Did that appear on an album? I only have singles...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Masters at Work's "I Feel Love" remix is probably one of the few they've done that do not improve the original, but that's really saying nothing at all, considering the source.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Swear to G-d, man: I strap on the headphones, cue up "I Feel Love" and damned if it doesn't sound like the best music EVAH! Mr. Eddy wrote an eloquent description of it in "Accidental Evolution" that was posted somewhere on this site. That Dance Collection is indeed fantastic: has nearly all of the '70s hits and salvages the "More" from Live And More ("MacArthur Park Suite") and the lesser-known "With Your Love" from the Thank God It's Friday soundtrack. (The only three-record, five-sided (!) LP I've ever heard of, incidentally.) Then comes Bad Girls, then Love To Love You Baby, and then pick-and-choose among the rest of the 70s stuff. I'm not terribly crazy about her '80s music after The Wanderer - in a way, the '70s died when that was released: 1980 (Joke stolen from "The Simpsons", as Mr. Snrub and possibly others will no doubt recognize.) I'm sure most of this stuff is on the new Bad Girls reissue, but I can't guarantee that. I don't think her epic "J'Taime" (sp?) cover is terribly hot, but I only played it a half-dozen times, and the last time was 25yrs ago, so what do I know?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always thought "Four Seasons Of Love" was her most consistent album. And side four of "Bad Girls" (aka last three songs) has to be sought out - lot of people fall on the way side while travelling through sides 2 & 3.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the eponymous album she did with Quincy Jones in 1982 was way better than Thriller.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW: Summer minus Moroder = dud?
Is this correct?

For the most part, but there's still:

"Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)" - a frisky little thing, best in its 12" extended mix.

"State Of Independence" - makes Jon & Vangelis sound classic - no mean feat.

"This Time I Know It's For Real" - one of Stock Aitken Waterman's finest (no, really).

"Melody Of Love (Wanna Be Loved)" - a successful excursion into Diva House (though I prefer the original version over the inevitable Morales mixes).

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anybody know who did the version of 'Love To Love You, Baby' that was on a 90s Diet Coke ad?

Also, Bad Girls and I Remember Yesterday are my owns/faves. The SAW stuff wans't bad either.

Tim, I was surprised to see your love for Once Upon a Time - not that many ppl know it and most that do hate it. One of my childhood faves so happpy to see it get compliments.

The last fourth of "Bad Girls" is just fantastic. Too bad most of the singles were not picked among those though.

"Bad Girls" is the best disco album ever made. There isn't one weak track, however, the last three tracks are of course the real highlight, not only of the album, but indeed of Giorgo Moroder's entire career.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for Once Upon a Time, which puts Bad Girls to shame.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

As for post-Moroder, more patchy, yes, but she has had her moments. "Unconditional Love" was a fun effort with Musical Youth, while "This Time I Know It's For Real" was among Stock/Aitken/Waterman's better moments. And I kind of like "Love's In Control" too.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

'once upon a time' has its share of filler, but 'now i need you' and 'working the midnihgt shift' are the best tracks ever. absolutely stunning.

:| (....), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I have to second that, got that rec a week ago and the whole thing's great but those two songs're just heartbreaking ("Say Something Nice" prob qualifies too, not as purely electronic so (yeah) not as wonderful musically but Donna does a great job on a perfect neglected girlf lyric, one of the best times where she tries to be a BIT of a soul singer).

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 December 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Having gorged on BAD GIRLS deluxe and ON THE RADIO : GREATEST HITS 1 +2 (all stuff from the Moroder era) i was a-wonderin what else is
best? 'Wasted' comes up now and again as one to hear.

What else?

i picked up the Wanderer because Moroder produced it and it's a steaming pile of dung. i don't get the high marks on amg. and what the fuck is up with that terrible song that MJ blatantly stole for "Black or White"? the whole thing is a bad cock-rock Pat Benetar wannabe

the only redeming song on the entire thing is "Grand Illusion" which is dubbed out and super nice.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 March 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

Has anybody heard I'm a Rainbow?

Yes. It's not very good, a lesser The Wanderer. You can hear the Donna-as-Lene-Lovich "Romeo" on the Flashdance soundtrack. But indeed, every song on I'm a Rainbow feels like soundtrack fodder, the kind of stuff Family Guy would use to make fun of 1980s film montages. Catchy, though. Too catchy maybe. And it might be a concept album (can't recall). Another deficiency: it includes her "Don't Cry For Me Argentina."

Once Upon a Time... is prolly my fave despite a crappy side three (the woman has serious side three problems). And there's some great porn on the earlier discs.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 10 March 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

I've never gotten around to The Wanderer either, though "Cold Love" is my favorite of her rock moves.

OH! I finally heard The Wanderer and Eric H and Marcello's beloved 1982 eponymous album. The latter is much better than expected, and the former verging on great. Much more consistent than the pre-Bad Girls Moroder-Bellotte recordings, and I like the desperation and weariness that made her run into the arms of Christianity. She's having a "Breakdown," she's "Running For Cover," until she affirms that "I Believe in Jesus."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 23 August 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

1982 eponymous album?? I only remember the Wanderer single and I remember not liking it much at all.

Gosh thanks Alfred, I'm really glad you're awake right now. I already said it elsewhere but my daddy gave me the State of Indepedence 7" single at Christmas and I'll never forget it. I must have been...11?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 23 August 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Listening to the eponymous '82 album, now. Really strange to hear "The Woman In Me" and realize I used to have that single. I barely remember that song, though, and I don't like it very much, but there are other very cool things on this album for sure. This is a great album.

"Livin' In America" is good fun! Can we make it Obama's campaign theme song? And WOAH HO! Check out the synths on "Love Is Just A Breath Away". Surely that song is more fun than the cops will allow? And "Lush Life" is really beyond words. Fuck me, even Sheila E.'s first album ain't that good.

I'm going to see if I can get the Wanderer album next.
