AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, it's not anderson/butler but...the tear...hum...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny you should mention that -- the new band name has been decided -- the Tears, with Nathan Fisher and Mako Sakomoto -- and the skeletal website is live as of today:

http://www.thetears.org/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I say six months, tops, before Brett tries to tear Bernard's hair out and Bernard vows to never work with Brett ever again "because Brett's ego is the size of England".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

So what's the general concensus (as if there is one) on Suede on this here large board?

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Search for Suede in the archives and you will find knowledge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

first The Dears now The Tears whatever next?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

How is it pronounced?

Gudrun Gut Run Over by a Reindeer (Andy K), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fears (Lee Ving and his clones)
The Gears (anti-trucker hat/emo)
The Sears (Reasonable songs for familes in malls)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and I hate you for that horrible/wonderful handle, Andy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the bears ? (not too glamorous, though...).
so nobody's heard anything yet ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Tears Without Fears would be good, sort of like Men Without Hats.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

or niggers with hats (that was a fake rockumentary, a pastiche of nwa, PE and all. very funny as i remember).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual title of film Fear of a Black Hat, and yes, it's great stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(Though I must point out that the spelling of the group title is a bit different.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, maybe. just remember the name of the fake band in it and i'm pretty sure it was niggers with hats.
where is it available now ? just had a bad vhs years ago...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It's NiggAZ With Hats, is what I'm trying to say...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, ok. that "film" wasn't too famous, was it ? where did it come from ? (we're a bit far from the tears by now, i realize !)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
any recording of their first shows ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
well, the tears don't seem to make people especially crazy around here. still, i shall keep talking about them !
i've listenned to one of their live recordings and, at first and for a while, thought the songs were pretty average and, apart from some great guitar lines from butler, nothing sounded special.
now, after a few times, i begin to like some songs. in general, it's pretty soulful, slow ballads. so, for now, i think it's no revolution or genius but it may grow on you. i'm waiting for the official release but don't expect any massive blow from it (as timbaland is a fan of coldplay, guess he won't have a hand on this). the only thing i definitely want to hear/see is a gig.
so, tears = just for ex-ageing suede fans ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Saturday, 15 January 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Works for me! I haven't heard any of the shows yet, I should look into that. I admit I'm not tracking them or the site obsessively, I'm just patiently waiting on the first releases and/or Brett's solo album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 January 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

well, if you want to keep it new for the release, that may be a good thing as you will hear the songs as they're intended rather than a bad live bootleg that doesn't really serve the songs well. for me, i just wanted to have a rough idea of what it's going to be. and i'm curious. shame on me. in any case, if you want to dl the live tracks, i have them on slsk, so feel free to ask !
as for the live act, it's supposed to be brilliant and exciting to have them both back on stage. THAT i really can't wait to see as i've never seen suede's bernard era (they only played once in paris...).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Saturday, 15 January 2005 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them twice with Bernard and twice with Richard, so I suppose it all balanced out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 January 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw richard's first time (hum). it was for a radio session in paris, around dog man star's release. i was quite upset cause it was like a bad impersonation of bernard (from what i'd seens in videos). just seemed the band lost its balanced with bernard leaving.
anyway, so there are 2 people interested in the tears in here ? if it reflects the demographics, we may have to enjoy as much as possible before the label finds out there's not much money to make from them !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Saturday, 15 January 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I am listening to The Tears just now, and they sound like post-Butler (& post Coming-Up) Suede on first listen. i.e. Brett spoils the tunes a bit with his list-lyrics and list-melodies.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Bemusing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, didn't get all the lyrics (or cared much) but it seems he didn't spend most of his working time on them... melodies i got used to some but nothhing spectacular, yeah. a bit like suede's post bernard b-sides...
that sais, i've only heard the oxford show which is supposed to be the worst. and haven't heard "ghost of you" which is supposed to be a gem.
well...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm certainly interested in hearing anything i can about this band, been a long time Suede fan... so i was pretty excited to hear about this project. haven't been able to find anything on s0uls33k though, any recommendations where to look?

jonviachicago, Monday, 24 January 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well i have it on slsk. look for "dolet". as i said before, it's a bit disappointing/average at first, but if you listen a few times, some tracks are growers.
some friends of mine are gonna see them in london next month. hope they'll tour france.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Well, seems like the general lack of interest at ILM is mirrored elsewhere.

Tears Tickets

Quantum Heap, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Cer-lassic. Although the seller shot themselves in the foot by not mentioning Suede anywhere.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 24 February 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to the Astoria show last week and left really rather disappointed with the whole evening. It was all a bit embarrassing and desperate. Ah well.

Mind you, that link seems to be the exact same show! Make your own minds up, kids.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 24 February 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I tell a lie - that's obviously Oxford. And in a very different order to the Astoria show.

As you were...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 24 February 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

why embarassing and desperate ? aren't they good live or is it just the material ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 24 February 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Brett still hasn't gotten over Justine, I see. ;-)

http://www.suedestation.com/album.jpg

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

is this the official cover of the album ?
hum...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

The video for Refugees. The video's just ok, but I like the song a lot. There's some of those big spectorish strings that Bernard liked to put all over his McAlmont and Butler stuff, and Brett is maybe sounding more like Bowie than ever, and it's all sweet and perky and just like having the original suede back really, which is all I wanted. Yay!

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

"We're all refugees..." I think I prefer Justine's girlfriend.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

slang tang
that's that nuclear urban youth pig thang

Flyboy (Flyboy), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

i think this single sucks..it wouldn't even rank amongst the worst bernard'era suede's b-sides...
that said, i think they have at least a couple of great singles in their set...why don't they release them !?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

hum...just watched the video...and it sucks too...
can't understand why they released this as a single...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

The single is cathcy and Brett's singing is fine, but it does seem a little slight, pretty much all chorus. Not even a guitar solo!

D. Bachyrycz, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
ah, so I see the album has leaked...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 April 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

really ? sweet. when is its official release ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 7 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

well, i haven't succeed in finding the album on slsk... anybody got it ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I love to hear Anderson & Butler working together, "Refugees" ain't bad at all, but they should have hired a more interesting dummer

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

haha "drummer"

song is good, I say!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Ned "I envy you C-Man" Fatlord says I need to use the search button but that would be, like, WASTING my time. So I'll just post here and say this song is mega.

Nam_C, Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

The song is pretty good but the video is quite stale. I think British artists would break America quicker if they put their music to old T&A gangster rap videos, regardless of how it ties into the actual song.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 22 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Not as good as the first single off the last McAlmont & Butler album.
Sorry, but it's the truth. Not bad, though.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 22 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Guardian interview with *sigh* Petridis. And they're so happy in the photo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

CHEER UP, EMO KIDS MEN

haitch (haitch), Friday, 22 April 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

"Refugees" doesn't do it for me; too much of a self-conscious attempt at re-creating the "classic" Suede sound, and the song's not strong enough. I'm hoping that the rest of their material moves things on a bit; it isn't 1993 any more, fellas.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

They do look bluddy old, suddenly...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

playing on the Jonathan Ross show this evening according to Metro.

I found a six song album sampler at a charity sale in Kenwood House (!). Didn't like it too much at first but it's grown on me. There's a stunning ballad called 'Your Ghost' or something at the end...'Apollo 13' is great too...

thomas, Friday, 22 April 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Refugees is great!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know what Ricky Oakes or Mat or Simon have to say about Brett and Bernard working together again? Are they not pissed? Do they still speak to Brett?

Nam-C., Friday, 22 April 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

"Refugees" is excellent. And yes, ironically it sounds like something from Coming Up which isn't a bad thing at all in my book!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 25 April 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

i really cannot understand the love for refugees (and i'd define myself as someone whose critical sense is pretty low when it comes to anderson/butler !).
there's something i must be missing here...
i've download the b-sides to refugees. haven't had the time to listen to them, tho'.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Uhm... B-sides are disappointing at first listen. Not a patch on Refugees.

C-fran, Monday, 25 April 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

this has leaked apparently

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...haven't heard it yet. Was that cover designed by Peter Saville? I hope not.

Leon Future Coffee (Ex Leon), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

the album can be found here:

http://s11.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0XP62NG0IJU862PC4749H57C7T

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

umm, any chance of another yousendit?!

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

wtf! why doesn't it work ??

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

try this: http://s43.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1US50FOFB3HN51M7A493GAJ3QI

Lovelace (Lovelace), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

The guitars in "Refugees" remind me a bunch of Bernard's solo single "Not Alone"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

And so far this album is sounding like teh snore. Why is it so middle of the road? Why were they aiming for a stripped down version of "A New Morning" ?

I am also amused by Brett's inability to expand his lyrical lexicon at all.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i've listenned to the b-sides of refugees and it's awful...
there's a ballad where brett goes all "she whatever" again...
jeez...
and refugees, i keep listenning to it to understand the love... still no clue !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

thanx for the link, by the way !
i'm still excited to listen to the studio version of these songs (some should be good : autograph, apollo 13...)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else get a corrupted track 5 in that zip?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

The astoria gig was a bit naff, really. Hugely unexcited about the album, but will no doubt give it the same amount of attention warranted by A New Morning and, uh, Butler's last one.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

mcalmont&butler's last one was by far the best thing suede or butler released since coming up.... or maybe dog man star !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the 2nd Mcalmont & Butler disc was decent.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

hum...so, i've started to listen to a few trax from the album (autograph, apollo 13, fallen idol...).
not too excited i must say. is it the final version ? the production sounds a bit... unfinished...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
No one talking about this? Not surprisingly, sounds a lot like Suede to me. In fact, if this were the final Suede album, following "Coming Up," I would have been very satisfied. Or at least just satisfied enough.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Josh is totally OTM.

I just don't really care about Anderson or Buter anymore (together or separate) so while this is alright, I doubt I'll buy it.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Revive !

For some reason, I've listened to this album again lately (maybe due to the threads on suede) and it is REALLY good !
At the time it was released, I found it ok but kinda meh (and I still see why I thought that).
But really, it is a very good A&B album and it would have ended well a trilogy after suede and DMS (never liked coming up/head music too much and I won't even mention new morning or the anderson solo album). it's got a very positive/sunny/soulful vibe. very rich textures and arrangements.
perfect to get slowly and nicely into the winter.

AleXTC, Thursday, 15 November 2007 08:58 (eighteen years ago)

but that's maybe i'm old(er) now !
