seriously, everybody's talking about them like they're the best thing since marble ryebread, but i still like the black lips first record more. but then i missed them when they played LIVE! and IN PERSON! and I hear that was quite good but anyway, the kinksy stuff is OKish but the psyche freakouts leave me cold. maybe i have to free my mynde and the jazz will follow but come on now.

"everybody"?
I haven't heard a word about them outside of SF (where, admittedly, they are hot shit.) I caught the end of one of their sets, opening for Comets on Fire, and thought it was okay, made me curious. When I'd tried to get in to see them the week before they were sold-out, so they do have some kind of buzz goin... that may be attributable to the fact that Birdman Records is the best label in SF at the moment.

maybe it's just a local thing, but they got a great write-up in the local paper here and all my friends were raving about the show (that's the 'everybody' i was talking about) so i bought the record and was let down a bit... i'll give it another listen.

greg ashley has it going on. enjoyed his stuff since his mirrors band in texas (13 Patient Flowers is a great album). very good modern art damaged garage pop psych.

i really like the record. i talked about it on some other thread. nice rokey/seeds vibe at times, but weird and interesting enough to be more than just another garage/60's yawn. fun to listen to. i've never heard them or the main dude before this record.

I hear you, Fritz -- when I was out on the west coast this summer, I felt like everyone was talking this record up. I picked up a copy, thought it was fine, but not that interesting, and filed it away as typical flavor of the month reaction (as opposed to being, like, a manufactured hype or something). I've kind of learned to appreciate it more since then, though -- yeah, it is kind of just a direct channeling of the third Seeds record, but nobody else really does that, and he does it really well. So I still throw it on, and it slowly grows on me. I can't imagine myself ever being as rabid about this as the SF rock press was, though.

four years pass...

I bought the first record about the time this thread was made and I always liked it but didn't really get into it until lately. Is their second album or the live one any good? Also, is Green Dream by the Mirrors any good? I like 13 Patient Flowers.

i didn't like the second gris gris album. it wasn't terrible, but i REALLY liked the first album and i thought the 2nd was a disappointment. didn't like the dude's solo thing after the first album either. haven't heard the live album, but i imagine it could be good.
