VH-1 Classic Sublime Video Moments, # 9227

Much love to VH-1 Classic for lots of reasons (rarely-aired videos, formats that cohere, minimal talking-head crap) but for some reason, I just seem to notice more details when watching it that I never did before.

Case in point was today's airing of "Jesse's Girl," with a close-up shot I didn't remember seeing before of Rick actually playing one of the guitar solos. Even in my youth, I remember hearing criticism of Rick's musician status, which I'm sure that shot was meant to counteract, but the best thing about it comes at the end, when Rick looks away from the guitar right into the camera with a surprisingly pissed-off look, as if to say "You're f**king right I'm playing this solo! I'm a musician!"

Any others?

Erick H (Erick H), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have over thirty-six hours of VH1 Classic on tape. Hand-picked. Track-listing written down. I really need to write more of these.

"Jessie's Girl" features one of my favorite cliches. If you see somebody rocking out in front of mirror, it WILL get smashed!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the video for "Head On" by the Jesus & Mary Chain on VH1 Classic's "Alternative" show this afternoon -- and was struck by how truly awful it was. Not the song, mind you, but the needlessly glossy, effects-laden, silhoeted vixen-flashing video. It just seemed like they flushed their earlier aesthetic down the toilet and hired a guy who normally shot Winger videos. It was appalling.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Burn DVD-Rs of those and you will be everyone's friend, Mr. Manthony.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

If you see somebody rocking out in front of mirror, it WILL get smashed!

See also video for "Come Dancing" by the Kinks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

whenever I go to my mom's to do laundry I end up taping another half-hour's worth of prime shit. As I admit on one of those posts, I'm less prone to watch it when I get the chance since they're playing '90s videos now and I don't want to risk having to see Alice In Chains or Ugly Kid Joe again in my life.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

But Ugly Kid Joe were the Good Charlotte of their day!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

and you're the hitler of yours! (one lame meme deserves another)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugly Kid Joe -------> MUCH "punker" than Good Charlotte.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex In NYC ----> MUCH "more Hitler-esque" than Ned Raggett.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

he still have the stache?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm less prone to watch it when I get the chance since they're playing '90s videos now and I don't want to risk having to see Alice In Chains or Ugly Kid Joe again in my life.

I'm very disappointed in you, Anthony. Very disappointed.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

look I'll laugh my ass off at crap that came down before my day but I endured so much lame-ass grunge the first time around that i sure as fuck ain't gonna revisit it for fun.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The VH1 Classic Heavy Metal Electro Disco Connection Set always thrills.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

look I'll laugh my ass off at crap that came down before my day but I endured so much lame-ass grunge the first time around that i sure as fuck ain't gonna revisit it for fun.

that said my first experience with the new influx of tracks was a double dose of the Afghan Whigs, so I'll admit there are positive consequences.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

look I'll laugh my ass off at crap that came down before my day but I endured so much lame-ass grunge the first time around that i sure as fuck ain't gonna revisit it for fun.

I'm not talking irony here. I'm talking genuine 90s love.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm too busy marvelling at the alien and novel to revisit the visuals for "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and "Plush," which I can already replay in my brain like so many other adolescent embarassments and traumas.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

OK those aren't the best songs but neither are unbearable. And please don't try to deny the greatness of "Interstate Love Song," at least.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And please don't try to deny the greatness of "Interstate Love Song," at least.

I'll deny it. I did like "Vaseline," though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I read this thread as "VH1 classic Sublime video moments" -- meaning classic moments from videos by Sublime. Twas a headscratcher.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Vaseline" is probably the worst of their mid-90s singles. I guess it's kinda pointless to pick on STP lyrics but those always stuck out as particularly bad.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, sue me...i liked it a lot better than the snore-fest that was "Interstate Love Song". "Crackerman" wasn't too bad. "Sex Type Thing" had a good riff. They were still just so embarassing, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"I guess it's kinda pointless to pick on STP lyrics"

Oh, I think we can pick on them a little:

"Where ya going for tommorrow?
Where ya going with that mask I found?
And I feel, and I feel
When the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?"

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know "Crackerman". "Interstate Love Song" is an alternative rock radio classic--come on man, that chorus!

"Sex Type Thing" is pretty great as well--the "here I come, I come, I come" part is career highlight shit.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I karaoke'd that song once when I was like ten. I didn't realize how terrible the lyrics were until then. That was kind of embarrassing.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"ISL" is tolerable but "Big Bang Baby" was their moment of greatness as far as I'm concerned (I'd take "Vaseline" over "ISL" as well). You're not alone in your estimation of "ILS," but its never grabbed me, really.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Big Bang Baby" is great too. They were great when they were doing their glam rock shit. Really, "Plush," "Vaseline" and "Lady Picture Show" are their only mid-90s singles I'm not extremely fond of.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I played "The Big Empty" at a talent show when I was thirteen or fourteen, and I did it acoustic, BEFORE the unplugged special. Hah.

"Too much walking shoes worn thin.
Too much trippin' and my soul's worn thin.
Time to catch a ride it leaves today, her name is what it means (???)
Too much walkin' shoes worn thin

Time to take her home, her dizzy head is conscience-laden
time to catch a ride it leaves today no conversation
time to take her home her dizzy head is conscience-laden
time to wait too long, to wait too long, to wait too lo-ooo-ong."

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an improvement on Plush.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 October 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It was all about those sweet chords and CONVERSATIONS KILL

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone seen either of these two videos on VH1C?
Grace Jones, "Slave to the Rhythm"
Art of Noise, "Close (To the Edit)"

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

not me, sadly

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, those are the two best videos ever made!

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I've seen the "Close (To The Edit)" video before on regular VH1 like six years ago. It's like semi-animated and they're destroying a lot of shit with a chainsaw and other miscellaneous weapons, right?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss VH1 classic. I only discovered The Alternative like three weeks before I had to leave it behind FOREVER.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's the one. It uses some odd stop-motion effect, the same one in Neil Young's "Wonderin'."

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Close to the Edit" is fucking genius. Someone tried to convince me not too long ago that Garbage's video for "Only Happy When it Rains" was an homage to the Art of Noise clip (with Shirley as the little punk girl all grown up). Meh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

That video is OK. I like the sad kids wearing halloween masks in the rain. "Stupid Girl" is cooler.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I had "Slave to the Rhythm" on VHS and my daughter accidentally used that tape to catch a bunch of Christmas specials about ten years ago. But at least we have the Grinch and "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

When I saw the thread title, I briefly wondered how Sublime could have had over 9000 classic video moments and a VH-1 special devoted to them.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

#1) when he plays the guitar like a muthafuckin' riot

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

#2) when he pops a cap in Santo

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

#3) DATE! RAPE! STY! LEE!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Sublime were a egregiously overrated band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

duh.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But they got high! Dalmatian ownership notwithstanding!

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Brad Nowell would've acted like a jerk in their videos if he was alive when they made them.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 21 October 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't a huge fan of the earlier stuff, but that self-titled album is brilliant.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I sort of like Sublime.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I had a housemate who listened to a lot of Sublime. It was mostly nice as summer hanging-out sort of music. I liked their jammy bits. The guitar solos were decent by the standards of that sort of thing I thought. I miss human companionship and interaction.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, what time in the afternoon is The Alternative on? I always miss the regular slots cause of work.

anode (anode), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

my "duh" should not be mistaken for a dismissal of sublime.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 October 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That certainly figures.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's coming on right now, if anybody's interested.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Alternative," that is.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I had this on with the sound down low while I was getting my kid ready for night-night and got to witness U2's "Two Hearts Beating as One" video. I was first struck by how much I liked the Edge's hat and how little I liked Bono's help-there's-a-badger-on-my-head hairdo, both now and at the time. Then I was struck by the slo-mo jugglers, mimes, and acrobats parading through the clip. Not only must the mirror always shatter, but apparently if you film a video in European streets, the local circus performers will flock. In slo-mo.

Before that they played "Don't You Want Me Baby," which is a great idea for a song, even if the lyrics are a bit crap.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Alla this happened just last night, not that it matters.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Close to the Edit"...that was one of my favourite videos as a kidling and wanted to hump the little girl.

The last three times I've seen Vh1 classic, they played The Stranglers - "Always the Sun"...what the hell's that garbage?

I saw Dif Juz's "No Motion" though...lots of blurry grey scenes with trees overlapping the band playing...

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The last three times I've seen Vh1 classic, they played The Stranglers - "Always the Sun"...what the hell's that garbage?

You should be set on fire for that comment.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You saw Dif Juz? Holy crap.

Has anyone seen any Comsat Angels videos? I'm really feeling them right now, for some reason...

Erick H (Erick H), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dif Juz vid is from the Lonely is an Eyesore comp., which is dead cool.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, Springfield didn't play the solo on the record, although he does do a nice job of miming it in the video. Neal Geraldo - Mr. Pat Benatar - played it.

Phil Dennison (Phil D.), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the video from his movie on tape. The bridge is a TOTAL "Born To Run" rip and the visuals are incoherent as fuck. I have NO idea what's going on in that. Sadly I don't have his sci-fi video or "Jessie's Girl" (though I've seen both).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Affair of the Heart" was his "rick goes surreal" video.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the one I've got is called "you've gotta love somebody" or something. there's this great part where a door swings open wind and paper bursts through and the next shot is Rick (who we hadn't seen yet) staring into the abyss beyond the door with a ludicrously stern facial expression. cracks me up every time.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw the video for PSB - "Opportunities" a month ago. So many moments of brilliance, not limited to:

Chris Lowe passing a hammer to himself
Neil putting an Uncle Sam hat with a firecracker in it on his head
Horribly green-screened burning money

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the Rick Springfield video that was a Sci-fi epic?
Was that just a dream I had? Was it a Billy Ocean video?
Damn, sometimes I wish I could afford cable.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Ocean. "Wanna Be Your Lover"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 October 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I only get to see VH-1 Classic on my friends' satellite systems (it's not part of cable up here in Canuckia). I wish I got to see it more because they've done a great job of digging up some the bigger artists' more obscure videos - it's like some alternate 80s pop universe.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised (& embarrassed) to know this, seeing how I'm always pretending to be disdainful & dismissive regarding video; but anyways, that Rick Springfield sci-fi thing is "Bop 'Til You Drop". Wasn't there a time c.1984 when every goddam video looked like an outtake from "Mad Max"?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" (tsk, Ned) seems like somebody went "hey, Lando Calrissian was black!" and then they went from there. Shame the video is so wack and full of distracting sound effects, cuz I'm tempted to say the song features my favorite chorus ever.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" (tsk, Ned)

Did Loverboy ever record an answer song?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Teena Marie did.

(Or was Ocean doing the answering? Both are '84, no?)

(Hi Erick H.)

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Did Loverboy ever record an answer song?

No, but as I mentioned on some other thread, Ocean stole the verse chords from Loverboy's "When It's Over"! Maybe that's how Mariah Carey got the idea to rip off "The Best Of My Love" and name the track "Emotions."

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 14 November 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that "loverboy" video is simultaneously the cheesiest thing AND the greatest thing to come from 80s video.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 14 November 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

and i BLAME YOU, mr. miccio (as well as barima and outkast) for making me buy a billy ocean best of ... um, maybe not cause it's actually quite good! it's interesting how AMAZING a song "caribbean queen" is after not having heard it in, like, 10 years?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 14 November 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, how did Outkast influence your Bily Ocean purchase? If anyone, the Ying Yang Twins make me want Billy Ocean records!

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 14 November 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love Really Hurts Without You" is the shit, isn't it?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 November 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Sorry, ALex in NYC, but that Stranglers song is just so naffy...

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's far from their finest hour....BUT IT'S STILL THE STRANGLERS.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Burn DVD-Rs of those and you will be everyone's friend, Mr. Manthony.
I concur and second that motion, miccio.
I can trade 8 hours of "120-minutes" circa 1997-1998 for some of that.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 February 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Close to the Edit"...that was one of my favourite videos as a kidling and wanted to hump the little girl.

Ummm...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

some day, some year, I will get something together and I'll let y'all know. Until then just watch VH1 Classic.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 4 February 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)
