Anyone heard the new Manics single "The Love of Richard Nixon"? Why hasn't Wire dressed up in a big banana suit yet?

The song is not all that bad. They look deadly serious in the video. Nicky Wire has still not donned the big banana suit, which is the only way they can save their careers now.

If anyone goes to see them on their UK tour please warm my heart by throwing banana skins at Wire.

worst single of the year

Well, seeing as someone has chimed in already, I'll offer my two cents. Even by the Manics lacklustre standards this is abysmal. It's the most monotonous, boring and lazy song I've heard in a long time. It sounds like they're half asleep! I hope I don't have to hear this again. Stevem OTM.

Yeah, but it's so much fun to spread your arms with your fingers in V-signs, screaming FOUR!! MORE!!!!! YEARS!!!!!!!! during it.

Kissing Time At The Pleasure Unit (kate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an improvement on anything they've done since - oooh I dunno - "Small Black Flowers. They've never made one cohesive album and they've done a lot of shit, but this is okay.

ManicsMike, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's appalling. And so is the album. I don't know how they managed to LOWER the bar from the last one, but there you go.

It must have been a collective hallucination that they were ever good.

i thought 'So Why So Sad'* and 'Found That Soul' weren't that bad, they certainly sound a lot better with shite like this around

*maybe just the Avalanches mix then

"Found That Soul" is one of the few Manics songs I really like, oddly. I haven't heard this, and obviously have no desire to. All I know is that the new album was influenced a lot by Dido or something.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

someone (can't remember who) described 'Found That Soul' as a These Animal Men b-side. that must be the appeal!

I do wonder how, with regards to the album's opening track '1985', they feel about being beaten to the punch by Bowling For Soup

Is the new album out?

Admit it, you'd like them if Wire dressed in the banana suit.

Manics Mike, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The album leaked about three weeks ago. It's dire.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

If it leaked then why hasn't hardened scoialist Nicky Wire been trying to sue his fans like last time?

Manics Mike, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, he probably knows that those that are still left will buy this even though it's rubbish.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(disclaimer: "Everything Must Go" is one of my favourite records of the 90s)

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything Must Go is pretty poor.

Manics Mike, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

4 / 5 in UNCUT (for the album).

judge yourself = best single since e.m.g. era
(which was the peak no matter what any f-cker says).

masses against the classes wasnt bad either.

piscesboy, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"the holy bible" is pretty much the only manics album i can imagine myself ever wanting to listen to again. "everything must go" is still good but i pretty much burned out on it at the time. everything else is hit and miss at best (i still love "motown junk," though!)
