No Kyuss, QOFTSA or Black Sabbath, please.

Elvis is Dead, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And no desert sessions either.

Elvis is Dead, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheesh. Are you sure you even like stoner rock?

Mog, Thursday, 21 October 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

I love Sabbath, and i like some Kyuss and QOTSA albuns.

But I do not know any other band.

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if they strictly qualify as stoner rock, but Lift To Experience have that whole apocalyptic desert rock thing going on.

Mog, Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And Mark Lanegan's solo album is pretty cool.

Mog, Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Noxagt have some stoner-rock resemblance.
Viola replaces guitar, though.
Billy Anderson engineered both of their albums on Load.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Elevator To Hell (aka Elevator, Elevator Through, Elevator Through Hell) - Every Channel

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have to second Fu Manchu, but I would go with "Evil Eye." Killer riffage.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Libido Space Dimension 'Allright 3 Hightime'

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Not all stoner rock is heavy and drone-y. Like, isn't "Stairway to Heaven" mostly famous for being the soundtrack to a million 70s teenagers getting high?

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Atomic Bitchwax--"Hey Alright"

steve hise, Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I was just going to suggest Atomic Bitchwax. I thought no one else would come up with that.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Not all stoner rock is heavy and drone-y. Like, isn't "Stairway to Heaven" mostly famous for being the soundtrack to a million 70s teenagers getting high?

along those lines, you could do worse than just picking up a copy of the "dazed and confused" soundtrack (even if it does go for deep purple's "highway star" instead of "smoke on the water").

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Core - The Hustle Is On
Novadriver - Void (particularly the songs "Rocket Superstar" and "Spinning Into No Future")

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to come at this from another angle here and suggest Loop's 'Collision'.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Smegma--they have a 7" on Sympathy with a 'song' called "LSD Bomb"-- mostly a heavily processed loop from the t.v. show, "Dragnet"-- "Marijuana is the flame, heroin is the fuse, LSD is the bomb, marijuana is the flame, heroin is the fuse, LSD is the bomb, marijuana is the flame, heroin is the fuse, LSD is the bomb"

and so on. Sounds good at ANY speed.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's some of my selections for E Pluribus Doomen, a stoner rock do-it-yourselfer I made a few years ago. Most of this stuff is probably still on stonerrock for free, somewhere.

The highlights ... included: (1) "Power Time" by Scott Weinrich's Spirit Caravan. (2) "Homophobic/Alcoholic" by Mustasch: Every home-rolled anthology needs a redneck/hardcore polka/doom hybrid. (3) Puny Human had the best name. On "Jimbo the Hut," you can shake your hips to the beat as someone gets tossed in a pit. Danceable doom! (4) Stoner doom is a dish best served cold. Thorr's Hammer, from Norway, furnished the epic, eight-minute-long "Norge," which sounds like Joan Jett doing a slick dirge-and-duet combination with the troll under the bridge. After which, he eats her.

Subsequent picks included Orange Goblin, Goatsnake, and Molehill. Near the end of the process I added something more upbeat, namely, Half Man's sludge-blues instrumental, "Two Perverted Men in the Swamp"...

The rest of it:

SKULLFLOWER

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Meadow - "Sleepy Silver Door" or anything on the Tolotta album. (The Matador one, "Shivering Kings," isn't as raw and thick as the Tolotta one, which I think is totally underrated.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno - dead meadow did NOT impress me live.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

dead meadow are terrible.

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

shit..KARP!!!

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

beaver, dozer, fatso jetson, hermano, los natas, lowrider, nebula, slo burn, unida

ave satani (lemike), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

dead meadow are not terrible.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

a fourth for the Dead Meadow slagging. it was a total travesty that Oneida(!?!) had to open for them rather than the other way around. and hey, while we're at it, why not some Oneida?

Hi Pete.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get an MP3 of the non-terrible Dead Meadow song that I referenced here, along with some MP3s from Wino's various bands (some of which have been mentioned here: The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, etc.):

DEAD MEADOW SUCK...BALLS.

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

THRONES.

AVOID DEAD MEADOW, UNLESS YOU LIKE GENERIC INDY FUXORS FAKING THEIR WAY THROUGH SOME RIFFS.

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

hey zack.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Meadow, who don't suck... balls, have a few good songs. I especially like the ones where they sort of lock into a groove (or "fake their way through a riff") like some kind of sludgier Lungfish.

I guess maybe they are seen as "poseurs" by some of the people who appear to take this stuff a little more seriously, though I'm not quite sure why. Many of the bands at the core of this loosely-defined genre seem to cover a lot of the same ground as one another; even the greater ones (Thrones, Melvins, Sunn0)))), Sleep).

Anyway, yeah, it was just a suggestion that hadn't been made yet. I myself wouldn't rate them higher than most of the bands mentioned here. But I also feel strangely compelled to defend them against charges of teabaggery.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

LOMBARDI IS THAT YOU?

DEEBZ (ddb), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

dead meadow have nothing on the majority of bands mentioned here.

ave satani (lemike), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Lombardi or Cosloy; just some dude. I'll get out of this now and concede defeat. I still think they are a totally valid entry, though, since they play a similar sound with a different type of melody and less of the occasionally overbearing cockrock approach some of these bands take.

Fine, I'll leave... but if I stop posting in this thread will you turn off the caps lock?

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Any Clutch from the s/t record on but if you want it to be "stoner" "Willie Nelson" from the latest High Times comp.

Anything from:
5ive "Stockholm Blues"
Milligram "Nipplemountain Clapdown"
Hermano "The Bottle" (ha, not Kyuss but uhhh, very very related)
which rawks, but I'd go w/ "Laserbl'Ast!" at the moment
Captain Beyond "Dancing Madly Backwards (On a Sea of Air)"
Can "Mushroom"
Brant Bjork "Hinda 65" (ha, more Kyuss related)
Beaver "Hour Glass"
Dozer "The Hills Have Eyes" (ha, you didn't say anything about a fake Kyuss)
Electric Wizard (just pick something of Dopethrone)
Goatsnake "Easy Greasy"
The Hellacopters
Monster Magnet "Tab"
High on Fire "To Cross the Bridge"
Mastodon "Naked Burn"
Sleep "Dopesmoker"
Scissorfight "The Most Dangerous Animal is Me"
Tarantula Hawk (track 2 off their second record)
Superjoint Ritual "Fuck Your Enemy"
The Heads "Television"
Truth and Janey "No Rest for the Wicked"
Wellwater Conspiracy "Teen Lambchop"

Just put that on random and light up.

Weenis, Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink Floyd dood!!

Actually...The Pink Floyd would be even better. That Barrett shit is insane.

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, i made a mess of that post. Ow well, close enough.

Forgot:
Earth (entire Penstar record)
On Trial "Miles Away"
Big Elf "Closer to Doom"

Weenis, Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Sleep "Dopesmoker"

This is a dirty trick to play on someone just dabbling in the genre for the first time.

George Smith, Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Dopesmoker is epic.

Shit, it talks about the Weedian! Come on. You can get none more stoner!

Weenis, Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

A troll occasionally singing over a monotonous riff that instead of terminating after three minutes, goes on for another hour. That's surely a way to bring people over to your tastes.

George Smith, Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dopesmoker is all about attaining Leary's 5th-circuit. It's an hour because it is ritual magick. You just gotta believe....

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm going to just print out this thread and the one on early 70s folk/psych so I wont be so aimless the next time I go to the record store.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like someone needs to hang out with the Weedian.

weenis, Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyuss/QOTSA/Unida/Hermano/Che/Desert Sessions/Brant Bjork (and any other Kyuss spin-off + Stoner Rock in general) Search & Destroy , Classic Or Dud?

Here is another thread worth reading on stoner rock from a while back.

cybernaut (cybernaut), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Asunder. More doomy than stony if that's a valid distinction for anyone.

And for as much as I like "Dopesmoker," Sleep's Holy Mountain is great way in.

pm, Friday, 22 October 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that band Gonga any good?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

How did we get this far without mentioning BOSTON.

hector (hector), Friday, 22 October 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have listened to some songs. I really like the bands that tried to emulate the guitar sound of sabbath's "master of reality". From what i heard so far, Sleep is the best. I didn't listen Dopesmoker (60 minutes long), but some songs from Holy Mountain. Very good.

Elvis is Dead, Friday, 22 October 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i think gonga are great; entertaining riffs, good vocals and neat production. their 2003 selftitled is definately worth checking out.

ave satani (lemike), Friday, 22 October 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Gonga are pretty good, if less than groundbreaking. I didn't know they were 'known' in the States

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i second earth's "pentastar...". i also really like their album "thrones and dominions". it's really minimalist; all instrumental, mostly just two guitars, no drums from what i remember. the opening track is a sublime example of just how majestic three chords can sound.

cameron, Friday, 22 October 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Master of Reality - Domino

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Pig Was Cool" by Killdozer. Dood, let's drive out to Waunakee and steal the Bong Road sign.

Bren (Bren), Friday, 22 October 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Lovebug Starski wins the prize. Might want to include "House of the Rising Sun" by Frijid Pink and "Swim" or "Bad Mother Boogie" by Cactus. Both of the latter are in print through Rhino Handmade. Go for the "live" versions.

Witchcraft on TMC. Relatively new and there are actual songs on the record, as opposed to simple riffs and atmospherics. Pentagram's retrospective on Relapse, specifically the song, "Review Your Choices." "Mesmerization Eclipse" by Captain Beyond, from the first album. "Breathe" -- the Pink Floyd cover, by Sea of Green from s/t although I reckon it's out of print.

Witchfinder General's "Death Penalty." St. Vitus' "Burial at Sea" which is one of few actually kind of catchy songs in the genre. That probably explains why others covered or cover it, like
Goatsnake for "Trampled Under Hoof" and the new Grave CD.

I'd avoid the latter and try and cadge a copy from someone unless you're into slow Swedish death metal.

George Smith, Friday, 22 October 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

so George you picked up the live Cactus thing on Rhino? I mentioned it on the Rolling Late-60's/Early-70's Thud-Rock Thread but I haven't picked it up yet.

Is it pretty hot?

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, when I saw it in Amoeba I thought it was a rip-off price. But it's actually just about what anyone might want from Cactus. The recordings are all equivalent to or better than the studio material.
You get the entire live side of "'Ot 'N' Sweaty" plus a live whack at "Bedroom Mazurka" which was left off the original. There's at least an album's worth of crushing rock 'n' roll medley plus Jim McCarty going nuts with his Ampeg scrambler -- an old octave fuzz-tone. And, automatically, loads and loads of the locked in Bogert/Appice double bass boogie stampede.

George Smith, Friday, 22 October 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Comets On Fire seconded.

Robin The Rock, Friday, 22 October 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Track 3 off of the new Electric Wizard album ("Flower Of Evil aka Malfiore") should really make an appearance. I like it better than anything on Dopethrone, but I don't really like Dopethrone all that much anyway.

Oh, and Boris' "Kanau pt. 2". Pretty awesome mix of their sludgy minimalist Melvins dudes and 70s rawk styles.

original bgm, Friday, 22 October 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)
