I’m not asking what your top 10 records of 2004 are (too early, right?), but what your top 10 of 2004 would be if the 10 records you adore didn’t exist.

Here are mine (not in order):

1. P.J. Harvey, Uh Huh Her
2. Wolf Eyes. Burned Mind
3. Blackouts, History In Reverse
4. Eyvind Kang & Tucker Martine, Orchestra Dim Bridges
5. Little Wings, Magic Wand
6. Auf Der Maur, Auf Der Maur
7. Mission of Burma, on OFF on
8. The Icarus Line, Penance Soiree
9. Jason Anderson, New England
10. Air, Talkie Walkie

I'm lucky if I can come up with ten for a year (during the particular year and not five years later). I think this year I will make it though. Here are some honorable mentions that probably wouldn't make my top ten:

The Body Acoustic: S/T
Melcochita & Lita Branda: The First Family of Salsa
Victor Manuelle: Travesa [really just for two songs]
Gilberto Santa Rosa: Autentico [for four songs, at best]
Groundtruther: S/T
Matthew Shipp: Harmony & Abyss
Son de Cali: [what the hell was that called--only one good song anyway so hardly deserves a spot]

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Rentboy: yes, it is.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i think 3 of those will be in my final top 10

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Somehow this is more interesting to me than a straight-up top 10 -- the really good records that didn't quit cut it.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, I don't have any number ones or whatever.

I enjoyed Björk's "Medulla" to a certain extent, though nothing on it---for me---touches "Homogenic." But it's a step forward from "Vespertine," in my opinion.

I liked Oren Ambarchi's "Grapes from the Estate." Ditto for Rosy Parlane's "Iris." The FourColor record was pleasant. I enjoyed the Espers, too. The Islaje record was also good, though I'm not entirely convinced by all of it. The Keith Fullerton whitman ep was cool. I didn't like the Electrelane record, mostly from the drumming, but "The Valleys" is fantastic. Those retro organs are yummy.

I'm scared of listening to the new Alice Coltrane. She's one of my idols and I'm afraid of:

a) her old age
b) lack of strings

I'm looking for recommendations, esp. from milton parker.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Valleys" is amazing - you're right.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 21 October 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

( shakes his ass )

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

These would probably be honorable mentions for me:

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld
Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free
Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
Jewels & Binoculars Plays the Music of Bob Dylan - Floater
Dave Douglas - Strange Liberation
Joanna Newsom - Milk Eyed Mender
Keren Ann - Not Going Anywhere
Air - Talkie Walkie
Mouse on Mars - Radical Connector
