turkey sandwich (turkey_sandwich), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone like oxygen? is it worth breathing?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

essential stuff. one of the best lo-fi pop aesthetics ever.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurry. No, seriously.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's good stuff it is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

while you're at the store and in that frame of mind, consider also:

the dentists, dressed
sex clark five, strum and drum
bmx bandits, c86 plus

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, how would you describe the above?

turkey sandwich (turkey_sandwich), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

they're all in the same kind of vein as the vaselines, lo-fi brits who write ridiculously catchy two-minute songs, sometimes smart, sometimes silly.

the dentists have a bit of a paisley underground pop thing going ("strawberries are growing in my garden") and a pretty great knack for la-la-la parts ("i'm not the devil") and they sound like pop kids stuck in the english countryside with a bunch of guitars and nothing else to do. they also sound a bit like guided by voices before gbv ditched their pop roots for rockist stardom.

the sex clark five are obsessed with the beatles, and zing back and forth between delicious 90-second pop ditties (which you'll be humming for the rest of your life) and 75-second psychedelic or droning throwaways (which are often great). the tunes, as often as not, are about "girls of somalia" or "sarajevo." the absence of any useful information in allmusic on their classic debut, strum and drum, is one of allmusic's great failings. the cd version has a million or so tracks, none of 'em listed on allmusic.

the bmx bandits actually included eugene vaseline at one point, and have also shared bandmembers with fellow scots teenage fanclub and the soup dragons (among others). they are sometimes silly ("kylie's got a crush on us," though that one's not on the cd i recommended) and sometimes deliriously in love, and always poptastic in that scottish pop fanclub sense.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the absence of any useful information in allmusic on their classic debut, strum and drum, is one of allmusic's great failings

yeah, i found that.

upon initial listening, i definitely hear some similarity to teenage fanclub.

a little bit of apples in stereo too, maybe?

turkey sandwich (turkey_sandwich), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, right, those 2 comments were in reference to the vaselines

turkey sandwich (turkey_sandwich), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, god, yes. if an album contained just a couple of the songs on it, said album would be worth getting. all these songs on one album? C to the L to the A-S-S-I-C.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

slushy sounds like the rentals

turkey sandwich (turkey_sandwich), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i always thought eugene's singing on "slushy" sounds more than a bit like carl wilson.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What are you still here reading this? Run out and buy the damn album already!

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

surreal to no end: I just, out of the blue, got that CD.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what about eugenius?

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've tried and failed for years to *really* like Strum & Drum. One song from their Antedium album, though, called "Fool I Was" is *extremely* worth hearing. Sex Clark Five aren't Brits. I'm not sure if that was implied above or not.

dlp9001, Friday, 22 October 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I really dug Eugenius' "Oomalama" when it came out. I'd like to hear it again.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sex Clark Five aren't Brits. I'm not sure if that was implied above or not.

yeah, that probably was implied above. they're from huntsville, alabama. but they are, for all other intents and purposes, lo-fi brits. or maybe they're hobokenites like the bongos. geography is a state of mind.

reasons why i really really really like strum and drum: "faith," "streamers," "girls of somalia," "valerie," "i love you less," their high two-part harmonies, their warped merseybeat blend of acoustic guitars and rickenbackers, the fact that they have a song called "get back yoko." for starters.

"fool i was" is indeed a good one. and, happily, it's one of the roughly 7,000 bonus tracks on the cd version of strum and drum.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 22 October 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I alone in thinking that there is a lot of so-so stuff on Way of...? Certainly the great bits (eg. the singles) are great, but the ordinary bits are, erm, pretty ordinary...

I should dig it out and refresh my memory.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 22 October 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen The Vaselines live quite a few times. Do I get any brownie points? If so, I'm glad it was all worthwhile.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I alone in thinking that there is a lot of so-so stuff on Way of...?

You're not alone. There are a few songs on there that I have absolutely no memory of, and I used to listen to this all the time.

My fave was "The Day I Was A Horse".

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen The Vaselines live quite a few times. Do I get any brownie points? If so, I'm glad it was all worthwhile.

There was a period when they seemed to support every major indie band that played in Glasgow - on every occasion prompting a mass exit to the bar. Everyone was supportive because everyone thought Eugene was a good guy, but, sotto voce, everyone was saying, "What the fuck's he doing in that terrible band?" But everyone was wrong and Eugene was right it seems!

What did you do in the war, Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

someone stole my copy. it has about 4 (??) really good songs

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 22 October 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If you are saying that the Vaselines were terrible live then I agree. Like kcoyne, I saw them numerous times supporting indie bands galore in Glasgow and Edinburgh and they usually were awful. Especially when they went from just the two of them to being a four piece (featuring an incompetant stand-up drummer on electronic drums). The records were good though.

everything, Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to remember them spending most of their concerts exchanging abuse with their mates in the front row. The 'other two' looked really out of place, I think. As in, they looked like normal people.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I recall endless varieties of "EUGENE'S A SEXY BEAST!"-style heckling during long pauses between songs. I have a tape of one of those gigs somewhere which should be worth digging out to see if it's as bad as all that (I think it's when they were a two piece). Perhaps I need to cut them some slack, remembering how godawful some of those bands were back then. Bands like The Clouds, the Sea Urchins and the Orchids were beyond incompetent, way worse than the Vaselines, who at least had attitude, humour and more than just a couple of songs. Having said that, Meat Whiplash always rocked, though.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 11 July 2008 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

absolutely fucking magical at southpaw last night. did every song you would want them to do (which isn't all that hard considering the length of their discography). voices both sounded excellent though i wish frances cut thru the mix just a tad bit more. band was tight and simple, all strummy electric gtrs and poptastic drumming. patter was hilarious. opened with "son of a gun," ended with "dum-dum." no new songs, though eugene started the encore with a spinal tap joke: "here's a new song ... a 20-minute jazz-funk odyssey ... he wrote it," or someting along those lines. then they played "you think you're a man." which was great.

odd, considering how many times i've listened to "way of the vaselines," that i'd never noticed how many songs on it are in 6/8 (or 6/4?) time.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

fact checking cuz, Friday, 11 July 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

They're playing tomorrow from 6/7 - 8pm on Saturday at Marymoor Park in Redmond.

I think SP20 is now sold out for Saturday. Sunday has Green River, and may still have tickets left.

520 bridge closure + downtown Redmond bike race closing off downtown Redmond = GET TO REDMOND IN THE MORNING OR ELSE OH GOD

I once blasted "Molly's Lips" while a couple of friends were over. "Worst band ever!" they protested. Should I have kicked them out?

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently the backing band is made up of B&S members. Hmm.

one year passes...

Every once and a while a new (to me) song will come along & really get stuck in my head. Now I'm not talking about the casual, hum-a-tune version of this phenomenon, but *hooks* embedded in the brain, cycling over and over again, demanding my constant attention. This is the jam that is currently occupying my headspace:

Weird that you should say that because my bf recently made me a mix with this on and I've been listening it to it in the car but singing it in my head constantly. It's a good thing that I love it to bits. That said, the original is also A++ and I listen to it just as often tbh.

I was unaware that the song was a cover or even that Divine had a recording career tbh.

fourteen years pass...

Found about this just yesterday in connection to something I was working on:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3414374/

Looked for a stream, and was able to watch it for nothing on something called Plex (if you're interested, just google "Teenage Superstars film" and a free option will come up).

Not quite as good as I'd hoped for--the contours of the story are every rock documentary ever made--but the Vaselines are in there a lot, also the Shop Assistants and the Jesus & Mary Chain, so worth watching. I'd forgotten that the Soup Dragons actually had a Top 40 moment.

clemenza, Friday, 7 June 2024 16:56 (one year ago)

oh cool, thanks for the tip. in the UK it wanted me to get a NowTV subscription but I just tried it in Opera with the VPN and it's letting me watch it

Colonel Poo, Friday, 7 June 2024 18:03 (one year ago)

The film got me to order Eugenius's Mary Queen of Scots, which was still new on Canadian Amazon for under $15 (under $5 on the American equivalent--drives me up the wall). Hope it's good.
