eminem - mosh

more polished 'white america'/'we as americans'. starts out with the pledge of allegiance, then war sounds that morph into a sharp floating guitar line, weighted by the classic eminem plodding piano progression. classic em boom, chk drums plod through the entire song (they never get boring). strong chorus,

come along / follow me / as i lead / though the darkness / 's i provide / just enough spark / that we need / to proceed / carry on / give me hope / give me strength / come with me / and i won't / steer you wrong / putch'er faith / an' your trust / as i got us thru the fog / to the light / at the end / 'a the tunnel / we gon' fight / we gon' charge / we gon' stomp / we gon' march / thru the swamp / we gon' mosh / thru the ma(r)sh / take us right / thru the doors / come on.

the first verse has a weird mystical reference and a TI shoutout. rest of the verses are poetic political ranting, and that might lead you to say, this is corny, but he might have a calculated position (or at least one shared by a lot of people who might finally vote in this election). i hope he carries it thru in encore.

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

'white america' spoken-word outro where the drums drop out to reveal the soldier footsteps, and the instrument-voices drop out to the classic em humming. then hailie says, "do you guys hear us? ahahaha!"

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

How goth-metal is it? (I'm not kidding.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

4/10 if david banner is 6.5/10

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, noted.

It's definitely in process at least. Wu Tang meets Sisters of Mercy meets who knows what.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 21 October 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard "Mosh" yesterday. I liked it, but I have to say it remind me a little bit of RATM.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

*skeeved*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get the RATM comparison....it's much more horror movie goth soundtrack stuff...man Em is PISSED....it's pretty fucking gripping....nice to see this kinda stuff out there by a high profile artist...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it has a touch of ratm-corniness

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's WAS over at 'so many shrimp', which is where I got my copy.
Again, the beat AND the rhyming is pretty weak but the ANGER is enjoyable.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

forks, you've been talking shit abt em's skill on the just lose it thread too. that's unacceptable, mainly bcs he is an amazing mc even if he gets corny.

and the beat isn't bad, his production style is just getting overplayed/sounds weak next to the south and jus blaze, but you have to understand, em rhymes best to his own beats bcs he's so tight with them.

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the anger is the corny part

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i take that back. the corny part is the "message"

p$, Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm talking shit about em's skills because NEITHER of these songs represent the quality I'm used to outta him. Radio and mix-tape material that I've heard tends to be MUCH better. My beef is that he's flooding the net with pre-release crap when the album itself is likely to have the strongest material. It's hardly a beef; it's more like warning new listeners not to believe the hype: son can do better than this.
For the record, I like Em a LOT when he's truly on.
Yes this is corny but it's also a pretty weak beat. Em, I'm afraid, is taking the Prince route of believing just what you're saying: that he's entirely self contained. Em sounds best over his own beats? Not buying that. I'd MUCH rather see him work with other producers. His own stuff seems so limited and base to me. I have no issues with half the album but him producing the whole album seems a bit self-indulgent.
The "message" IS corny and a strange mix of naive and would-be-anarchist. The anger, again, seems real and makes this worthwhile to me.
I don't know if I've heard a single white artist say "Fuck Bush" on tape yet. Is Em the first? Did it really take four years?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

And gothmetal rap: I would suggest Banner is 8 of 10 and Em is right around that 4 on this track.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Strong recommendation in favor of the Eminem Green Lantern Invasion Mix Tape for those curious to see if I'm talking out my ass.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure there's some minor league punk band that's said fuck bush and we just never heard about it....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Just the one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of a Banner Scale for evaluating music (just rap?).

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of a Banner scale for ALL music.
1 Banner = 1 Lil Jon
.7 Banner = 1 Justin Timberlake
37 Banners = 1 David Boyle

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it could work like that - I was thinking that on the Banner Scale, 5 = the goodness of Banner, above 5 means better, and below 5 means worse.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that would be the "Banner Scale"; if you wanted to use it as a NOUN though...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

forks, there's so much more room over banner in terms of goth metal rap. no way he gets an eight. it's just an unexplored genre.

p$, Friday, 22 October 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'm thinking of gothmetalrap as more punk than darkcore.

And who is more punk than D. Banner?

"Whores! Mongers! Whores! Mongers!"
"Check this shit out! On everything, I wanna tell ya'll niggers somethin': I ain't BENDIN' for your motherfuckin' money, nigger. You can keep your money, BITCH! Know what I'm talking 'bout: I'm gonna stand like a motherfuckin' man, nigger. Give a fuck about your motherfuckin' money, nigger; tryin' to give me ten gs, nigger? Look nigger: shit, I'm a motherfuckin' seventy, eighty THOUSAND dollar nigger, motherfucker! Get your motherfuckin' weight up; get your money right bitch 'fore you talk to me, nigger! It's about your fucking soul, old whore-ass bitch! I'm a man 'fore I'm a motherfuckin' rapper; fuck you AND your money! You old whore ass... fuck ass... dicksuckin ass... hide behind your GOLD and PLATINUM ass... motherfuckin'... weak... OOOOH, you sonuvabitches! UNNGH!"
"Whore."
"Whore. Monger. Whoremonger."
"Mississippi FUCK, boy!"

wow i just heard this! I thought it was kinda lol when he wedged in the "no more blood for oil" bit, but at the same time i think this is pretty arresting stuff. mark's pretty on-point; it doesn't seem to collude into something with real impetus, but there's something very primal at work here that could've been fleshed out. i think.

"First Punk President" is great btw, i'm totally gonna steal that :(!

I have a feeling MTV is not going to show this, so here's the video in Quicktime:

http://www.gnn.tv/videos/video.php?id=27

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

em's lucky that video is so effectively dramatic (I'm not sure I approve of every element but it IS gripping and if it gets a lot of attention it could be pretty controversial), cuz without it that track is a whole new unrewarding level of turgid for him.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

not his best track, but it hardly matters. that video is amazing.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus, I wonder if it occurs to him that it would help him get his message across better if he at least pumped up the BPM and put some hi-hats in there. that's the most plodding Eminem song I've ever heard, which is really saying something. the video's cool even though the animation reminds me of that horrible Chronic Future video that was on MTV a lot over the summer. and the animated Lloyd Banks is hilarious.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ok I thought that was Lloyd Banks. I have to admit that everytime his character was around I kept noticing homoerotic elements. He's put on his knees! And gets revenge by HOSING DOWN the cops later!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone have this video? The gnn site is overloaded, thanks to Salon, and nobody has a decent torrent going...

schwantz, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

How the fuck is David Banner "goth-rap"??? This website gets more clueless by the minute.

they're premiering it on TRL right now.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet. though i'm curious what they'll edit out (at the very least a mouth saying "fuck bush" ain't gonna fly).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I only caught the end of it but it looked pretty much the same as the web version aside from the curses.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't mean that kids will be taught in school that eminem changed history or anything

No, they'll be taught Jon Stewart did.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's available? I had really wanted to watch that.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Another thing: did you notice how this song pretty much explains the blatant, pandering half-assedness of "Just Lose It" just as it supplants it ? One can almost see a backstage deal at MTV - "here, you can have your Slim Shady if you air this."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Only just noticed this thread (and its subject) - it's a quality song and video. Never mind Encore, roll on the Eminem best of DVD.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 29 October 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Ned, the sentiment is nice but the video isn't that great and the song is zzzz. If it's in any history books it will be for the controversy and not for the music. But BET's been playing the hell out of it, so I guess he did get his ghetto pass back.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Joseph: that's an interesting theory and worth discussing further.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

not really. hasn't that been the strategy every time? here's the wacky upbeat first single, then the dark slow grunting second single. it being political instead of personal this time doesn't seem that different to me.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it in Viacom's best interest to be broadcasting anti-Bush propaganda?
That's a little different.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually "The Power of Nightmares" is the name of the whole thing, sorry. "Politics of Fear" is the name of part II I think. You can't get the episodes from the BBC but people have put them up on the site I mentioned above.

i like the song, the first one i have ever heard of eminem. i am not exactly a fan of rap. though this is more like goth-rap. what about the title? does mosh mean something else than "to dance wildly at a concert"?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 30 October 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's what it means basically. Em's associating moshing with voting by drawing parallels between them (mass participatory, cathartic, etc.) as a means of getting the traditionally disinclined-to-vote MTV demographic to cast ballots in this election.

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 30 October 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone else think he was lip-syncing this on SNL?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 1 November 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw this tonight and I liked it. But this is the one time I kind of wish there had been more violence in an Eminem song. Seeing the crowd of rebels arrive. . . merely to vote was kind of a letdown. Of course, that's a lot more responsible than it would have been for him to portray some sort of riot, so now who's anti-social?

But still I liked the video. As I've said before, I've always had a weak spot for animated or semi-animtated music videos.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: "Mosh" vs "Breaking The Habit"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I just heard this last night. It's Eminem's most arresting lyric for a while, but the beat's rather dull.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Breaking The Habit" since it still has that Mr. Hahn guy doing his "UH! Just triggered a sound effect!" thing.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with Eminem.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there was one only.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from anguish,
sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,
so I said to Eminem,
“You promised me Em,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there has only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
Eminem replied,
“The years when you have seen only one set of footprints,
my child, is when I carried you.”

sean, are you reading this? you still moved by the track/capable of playing it all the way through?

da croupier, Monday, 21 December 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not sure! I haven't listened to it in years and to be honest, not being a huge Em fan in general I haven't really been tempted to go back to it with any regularity. Ultimately I put it so far up my ballot for the message more than the track, which yeah ain't ever really a good indication of a track's deathlessness...

Then again, have a feeling that I don't listen to MOST of the tracks that have appeared on my year end lists with any regularity, either. FWIW.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 21 December 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

Eminem's people are being kinda dicks, huh? Rereleasing Relapse already with 7 new tracks, but can't buy it individually. On iTunes you can buy 6 of the new 7 tracks, but NOT the new single. Thats "Album Only", so if you happen to be one of the nine remaining Eminem stans you'd have to pay $15.99 to get the new single. Not that I'm personally interested in these, just so annoying that labels still pull this shit.
