it pretty much speaks for itself, but GOD is it beautiful! the way the guitar part and the hook collude gives me goosebumps, and nelly's actually a really nice singer? nobody seems to mention that. i don't think it's as good as MY PLACE yet, but who knows.

btdubs, it's called "Over and Over" guys!!!

Oh no.

Huk-L, Thursday, 21 October 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the answer single to the Shatner/Joe Jackson song, isn't it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

An answer record to Common People...

"You took me to a supermarket? You took me to Waitrose, you bourgeois prick."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

its surprisingly good. isn't it? no irony. a very good pop song. just can't get it out of my head since the first time i heard it...

karl76 (karl76), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think its ok, I just sort of fall asleep to it though.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's actually good! though i'm kinda sick of it already, my attn span is getting worse and worse lately - i pretty much hate anything i hear after five or six listens

i was hoping this would get some crossover radio play, but i haven't heard it on any of the country or hiphop stations. not that i was really expecting to

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Its being played on Kiss FM

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was a chuck thread

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't just about every city have a Kiss FM? and don't all of them have about the same format?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the only kiss FM around here - that i know of - is an oldies R&B station that doesn't play anything recorded in this century. is that what you're talking about?

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"I thought this was a chuck thread"

Well Curtis, I know you to be a scoundrel and terrorist-sympathizer so I am not surprised by this roguish treachery.

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"nobody seems to mention that. i don't think it's as good as MY PLACE yet"

wow, this must be complete shite!

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

nice enough, but the screwed and chopped could REALLY be something

one month passes...
Where hiphop and country meet: MOR adult pop.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This song totally sucks. And the "twangy" part of the guitar line is really friggin annoying.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It occurred to me that both Tim and Nelly could have recorded this song on their own, but separately it would have been a whole lot less of an accomplishment for either of them. I'm still not sure how I feel about this.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 24 December 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a song about repetition, i just realized.
a country grammar song about repetition.
and it sounds more like *nsync than like country or rap.

i like it, by the way.

chuck, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, he sings "over and over again" over and over again. No one will remember it come spring.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stand the "old-timey radio" filter and the climax is underwhelming, but I still enjoy it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It reminds me of that 'standing on the corner with a broken telephone blah blah blah" song. And that's a good thing.

(But woe is me, if I forget about this song come Spring, how foolish I will look.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Nelly and what's his face but I like this. It's probably the only song getting airplay now that doesn't make me immediately change the station. Somehow knowing that the majority of ILM hasn't like the past two Nelly singles that I have makes me feel all warm inside.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I probably will forget it come Spring, though. Hey, it's pop.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

which nelly singles were the last two nelly singles? He's popped out at least six in the last two months or so and fuck if I can figure out the order.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry. Vague grammar. I have no clue which are the latest two Nelly singles. I meant that I have liked two recent Nelly singles (this one and "Flap Your Wings"), and the ILM consensus has been "meh" at best.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

>he sings "over and over again" over and over again<

right, my point exactly. the record is a model fusion of repetition-rock and onatopoeia-rock, and as a matter of fact, now that you mention it, i will remember it long after i forget what the most recent hits by the killers or modest mouse sound like; in fact, i already forgot what those sound like come to think of it, though i'm sure they are quite entertaining in their own way. also, i just realized that maybe the reason "over and over" sounds more like *nsync than like rap or country is because both tim mcgraw and nelly have collaborated with *nsync before (tim on their tv special a couple years ago.)

chuck, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oops - onomatopoeia-rock, i meant. though i'm still not sure if that's how you spell it.

chuck, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It reminds me of that 'standing on the corner with a broken telephone blah blah blah" song. And that's a good thing.

OTM!!!!!!! I really, really, really like this song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it's great obv., primitive radio gods (that was their name right?) definite counterpoint. to really send this over the top there should've been the concurrent mcgraw version on country radio at the same time a la "i swear" ten years back, but i guess tim's working his own irony on that score. sounds a bit like springsteen country ("one step up") too!

jj dncr, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's basically a late 90s alt-rock ac friendly track, the white boomer top 40 station in town that's so anti-hiphop they play the jay-z-less version of "crazy in love" spins this like CRAZY. it's on the more youth friendly (bigger) top 40 station on the hour every hour too. haha the rap and country tune for people who like "everything but rap and country".

jj dncr, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

HOW IN GOD'S NAME CAN ANYONE SERIOUSLY LIKE THIS HEAPING BOWL OF AWFUL?!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't like the blues maan?

jj dncr, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about the other millions of people who like it, but I like just about anything that's mellow and has that sort of guitar (is it a steel lap guitar?)

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

How can anyone seriously describe anything this melancholy and sweet as a heaping bowl of awful?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Head trauma, Dan.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck - There's something about Nelly that lends itself to a profound degree of forgettability. "Shake Ya Tailfeather" was the #1 song in America one year ago today; can you rattle off two bars from it? Can anyone?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i can - can't you?

jj dncr, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"profound" + "two bars" + raising the 'stands the test of time' spectre: the hattrick!

jj dncr, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

and 'shake ya tailfeather' wasn't the number one song in america one year ago today

jj dncr, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

and i can't remember how that one goes off the top of my head, no, but that's probably just because my head committed mitch ryder shaking his superior tailfeather to memorization long ago. i have no problem remembering the tunes of a bunch of other nelly hits, though. he's quite a tuneful guy, really. as is tim mcgraw for that matter.

chuck, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I stand corrected: it was on its descent from the charts at this time. So maybe, a year and three months ago. Not sure if you're really making a point or just being an ass, though.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

a country grammar song about repetition.

Now I can't get the Fall out of my head! (And wouldn't that make for a trio.)

A Primitive Radio Gods comparison, hmmm. (Still haven't heard the song -- I'll say this much, being home for Xmas means I end up hearing a lot of my dad's fave radio station, and he's a confirmed country fiend, has been since at least the 1960s if not earlier, and is always listening to the new stuff by default. So I heard quite a few things I don't normally hear but this wasn't among them, which is kinda surprising since I've heard plenty of Tim McGraw on that station before.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i also love that Nelly still manages to fit in his trademark "woo!"

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck - There's something about Nelly that lends itself to a profound degree of forgettability. "Shake Ya Tailfeather" was the #1 song in America one year ago today; can you rattle off two bars from it? Can anyone?

Are you an ass or ya mama have reindeer?

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I prefer "In Da Club," when Ronan and Jess were going on about how undeniable it was, I kept thinking that "Shake Ya Tailfeather" was infinitely more oppressive.

People who say that nobody can remember a massive hit usually never spent much time really listening to the massive hit. I'm not going to pretend that nobody can sing Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" just because its popular and I change the station every time its on. It was a big hit, of course people can remember it.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Breakaway" is great at what it does. I'm not sure if I actually like it, though.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

of course people can remember it

Er.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This song isn't that good, I've decided. Like I said, it would have been completely forgettable if Nelly or Tim McGraw had recorded it on their own, and the duet makes it just gimmicky enough to make it noticeable.
